Dear Mark, I sent a reply to you, however it was rejected. Thank you so much for all that wonderful information re the Gallard family. My side of the family is Wm. Thos. Barnes who married Isobel Gallard. I haven't had time to go through all the information you have so kindly sent to me, however once we settle down again after tripping around the country, first to Perth & Albany and then to Dunbogan for a rest I will go through it all. I am not sure if I mentioned that we lived in Ryde for 30+ years and during that time we lived opposite a family called Gallard - they had a beautiful old home on the corner of Inkerman Road and Pennant Avenue and they worked in their beautiful garden every day. It was an absolute picture, there was a purple carpet every year when the most beautiful Jacaranda trees were in bloom. I have no idea of their christian names and whilst they were always polite and friendly they kept very much to themselves. Once again, thank you. My kind regards, Joan Colmer.
yes I have trawled it a few times :) Graham Piper wrote it in pre-internet days, a Herculean effort! Jackie, PROV (Public Record Office of Victoria) has some indexes online for immigration http://www.prov.vic.gov.au (go to "access the collection" and then to "digitised records and online indexes") There are quite a few entries for PARISH into Victoria, with four entries for those arriving on the "Borda": Mr R Parish in 1914 (age 27) (reference: Port B: Fiche 900; Page 005) and what appears to be a family arriving in 1921 - Mr A age 39, Mrs E age 39 and Master W age 6 (references Port B: Fiche 942: Page 010) As you say you've joined the Melbourne list perhaps someone in Melbourne who can access the records could check the details for you - they are probably on findmypast but their terms and conditions prohibit look-ups for others, so I can't help there. I can't see him listed in the Victorian BDM indexes - certainly no marriage to 1920 and not listed up to 1985 as dying in Victoria. NSW BDM indexes can be searched free here: http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/ I couldn't see a death for him there up to 1980 (which is as far as the indexes on public access go due to privacy restrictions) ancestry.com.au have some Australian electoral rolls online and may be worth checking. Other listers may have more suggestions of places to look for him. Perhaps he returned to UK ? Alison :-) Sydney Oz --------------------------------------- Gregory Ade wrote: > Hallo, I am in the UK. they were the 'other' Pipers, Captain John Piper of Point Piper fame - my lot were also 2 brothers, Francis and Edward but they were transported for 7 years on the Minorca in 1801. Their wives and children came free on the same ship. A son of Francis, Jonathan, went to Brisbane Water as a shipwright but the family didn't stay up there, all settled around Balmain. thanks Patrick - no, no connections, I'm afraid. Yes, Davistown was named after our family - almost accidentally by the CofE minister at East Gosford at the time. He was running a track to his Davis parishioners over there and said 'we may as well call it Davistown!' I actually have two sets of ggggrandparents buried at St Pauls Kincumber - William and Maryann Davis, and Jonathan and Ann Piper. A bit eerie to visit but great to have roots like that :) I knew about the 2 cemeteries, that was why I only asked about Tom and Susannah's family. Will look forward to the book! Hallo, I am in the UK. I have found an entry for a Robert PARISH on SS Borda bound for Melbourne and Sydney. I am not sure if he disembarked at Melbourne or stayed on for Sydney. I have joined the Melbourne list for help also. Just wondered if anyone can suggest where I look in Sydney for any records that may mention his name. I have looked on BMD list for marriages/deaths. I would like to know if he landed at Sydney. His date of birth was July 1887. Born in Middlesex UK. His parents were Alfred and Anne E Parish. He had brothers and sisters in UK and I know what happened to all of them. Any help would be very much appreciated. Regards from Jackie.
Leith forgot to add I have no Pipers Patrick ----- Original Message ----- From: "Leith Davis" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, January 13, 2011 12:16 PM Subject: Re: [ANS] Edwin Punch aged 2 & Mary Tancred aged 48 both died1868seeking place of burial > Tom Davis was my ggg uncle, his father was William Davis, and the family > were shipbuilders from Brisbane Water. Hi Leith The Davis entries I have I have found by searching the funeral notices in the SMH, I have searched all notices from 1868 to the end of 1903 and below is what I have, let me know if you see any connections You probably know that there were two cemeteries, both generally known as Balmain cemetery, both located in todays Leichhardt, both opened in 1868, they were the Balmain General cemetery, where only a handful of Catholics were buried, the other being the Balmain Catholic cemetery where only Catholics were buried, the General cemetery closed in 1912 and the Catholic around the end of 1902. Sounds as though Davistown may have been named bu/after your family I didnt transcribe the detail of the funeral notice for the second names all the best Patrick July 1885 Christopher Thomas Davis 7 July 1885 SMH Funeral Notice 7 July 1885 The friends of Mr. James Davis of Manaro, College St. Balmain are respectfully invited To attend the funeral of his late beloved son Christopher Thomas, to move from his aunt's Residence, 354 Pitt St., this Tuesday morning At 10 o'clock to Balmain Catholic cemetery. James F Davis buried 18 November 1891 see SMH FN dated 18 November 1891 Mary E Russell Davis buried 26 June 1900 see SMH FN 26 June 1900 ----- Original Message ----- From: "Leith Davis" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, January 13, 2011 12:16 PM Subject: Re: [ANS] Edwin Punch aged 2 & Mary Tancred aged 48 both died1868seeking place of burial > Tom Davis was my ggg uncle, his father was William Davis, and the family > were shipbuilders from Brisbane Water. Tom Davis was my ggg uncle, his father was William Davis, and the family were shipbuilders from Brisbane Water. Tom was one of 13, and some of his brothers and sisters moved to Balmain - they were connected with mariners and shipping industry people eg John Booth was a close family connection. William Davis died at his daughter's home at Balmain and was initially buried there but remains were later moved to Kincumber. My gg grandfather was Tom's youngest brother Edward who married Lydia Piper - there was also a large concentration of Pipers around Balmain :) William was very Church of England, a schoolmaster in C of E schools, but Tom ended up Catholic - Susannah I'm guessing. They were staunch supporters of a Catholic orphanage at B/Water. If you would like to let me know the 3 x Davis that you have, I can let you know if they are part of 'my' family. Similarly with Piper, except that if you have Pipers around Balmain I KNOW they are 'my' family lol! best regards Leith Davis On Thu, Jan 13, 2011 at 11:47 AM, patrick callaghan <[email protected]>wrote: > Many Thanks Leith, I will let you know when I finally publish > I do have 3 x Davis but none with parents Thomas and Susannah, should I be > looking? > all the best > Patrick > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Leith Davis" <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]> > Sent: Thursday, January 13, 2011 9:11 AM > Subject: Re: [ANS] Edwin Punch aged 2 & Mary Tancred aged 48 both > died1868seeking place of burial > > > > congratulations Patrick - we will look forward to publication. > > I'm guessing you will have some of Tom Davis and Susannah Pickett's > > family - > > a Catholic branch of the Davis family > > > > regards > > Leith Davis > > > > On Thu, Jan 13, 2011 at 8:42 AM, patrick callaghan > > <[email protected]>wrote: > > > >> Greetings Linda > >> The Balmain Tancreds were certainly Catholic.
