Hi Dianna The cut off date for Probate Packets held out at Kingswood was about 1965. Am sure they dont have Wills yet for 1979 You would need to get via the Probate Division of the NSW Supreme Court . Cost was very approx $50 Bye MargM Sydney List Admin
Hi Bill That's a thought that Gloria may have taken the name Davis I will have to re check the marriage records. Yes the probate no for Tressie Davis of Earlwood is 886443 23.4.79 P23.10. Any help much appreciated Thanks for your reply kind regards Dianna
Dear Dianna, Have you considered that George DAVIS might have adopted Gloria? She may have then taken his name, and married under that name. Do you have a Probate Number? Sincerely, Bill > Tressie married an Arthur WILLSMORE in 1912 and he died in 1937 she > then > married George DAVIS in 1943. Hi I'm doing research into a great Aunt of mine, Tressie SMITH wo was born in 1892 in Orange NSW to Eliza GREER and Charles SMITH. Tressie married an Arthur WILLSMORE in 1912 and he died in 1937 she then married George DAVIS in 1943. Tressie died on the 23rd of July 1979 and she was living at 56 Ryrie Road, Earlwood NSW Tressie had one daughter Gloria aged 52 on her mothers death certificate the daughter of Arthur Willsmore ( I don't have prove of that though) so Gloria would have been born around 1927. Gloria married an Eddie/Edward ?? ( last name unknown). This couple had 3 children Garnet, Kay and Gregory and one Grandchild Gary. Now I don't know where to go from her to find this Gloria and family. I tried to look for a marriage of a Gloria Willsmore to and Edward ? but found nothing. Tressie did have a will so I may have to ask someone to check on this for me if anyone is going to the Archives Office. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated. Kind regards Dianna
Hi Marg, Thanks for the update. I did know that this was in the works but to think it has actually happened is truly amazing. Hi Some of the other states did have similar things which was restricted to their own residents. Used to be when applying in person at the library in Sydney meant that you were able to receive a gold card which gave access to additional data bases. I can't remember what proof you needed but it was able to be sighted in person. Thanks to Kerry Raymond on the Qld mailing list who prepared this Just to summarise the situation for the Sydney Morning Herald Up to and including 1954, use http://trove.nla.gov.au/ (free) >From 1955 - start of 1995, you can use http://archives.smh.com.au/ (not free) >From 1990 - today, you can use the News Store http://newsstore.fairfax.com.au/apps/help/qa.ac?sy=nstore#top The SMH Archives is apparently free to NSW residents via their State Library. It is not clear if there is any free access to those of us in Qld -- our State Library website isn't working very well today (no doubt still recovering from the floods). But there is always the option of a paid subscription: 24hr Access $15.00 48hr Access $20.00 1 Week Subscription $25.00 1 Month Subscription $40.00 1 Year Subscription $395.00 If you make a list of all the lookups you wanted to do in that period (1955 - 1995), you could take one of the short subscriptions and race through and do them all at a pretty reasonable price. It should be noted that the SMH archives is like the Trove service, scanned images with OCR-ed text used for searching. The catch is that you cannot see the OCR-ed text nor correct it. So if the OCR gets a name wrong, then you will never find it using the SMH Archives search tool. However, if you know the date of the event, you can just look through specific issues until you find what you want. Happy hunting ! Bye MargM List Admin
At a guess, because the service is paid for by New South Wales state taxes. Those of us who live outside of New South Wales haven't paid any. Of course, they could offer a paid subscription. Thanks Bill, Although there is not much information given, the age of 86 for Robert Monteith who died in 1958, and the tag "Glasgow papers please copy" led me to a likely Robert Monteith, born in Glasgow, son of Robert Monteith and Agnes Shearer. At this point, I have no indication that he links to "my" Monteiths, but I will keep the information in case of finding a connection later. Dear Catherine, It appears that the death information came from the Ryerson Index, www.ryersonindex.org The Ryerson Index currently indexes notices from the major papers in most states, and while the official index may end at 1980 on line the Ryerson Index from the Sydney Morning Herald, prepared from the actual notices, is up to date to the end of last year, with a full run from 1967, and fairly well covered from 1955. You will also find some deaths in different years way back to the very early papers in the 1830's. The Back Indexing Team of the Ryerson Index indexed the 1958 paper, and I have sent a copy of the notice off list, as the list does not take attachments. Sincerely, Bill PS. Thanks! That is definitely the right Robert, the trouble is that Mrs A Bates was Hugh's daughter Anna Bates nee Monteith, she would have been his aunt and adopted or fostered him. So it doesn't really tell me who his parents were - perhaps if I purchase his marriage certificate, it will help Catherine On 15/01/2011, at 1:58 PM, Michelle H wrote: > hi > > here is more from te newspaper > > MONTEITH-MEILLON. - The Engagement is announced of Dorothy Rochfort, > youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Meillon, of Forbes, to Robert > Hugh, of Killara, and son of Mrs. A. I'm trying to establish his parents, I know he was a grandson of Hugh. I have photos of Bobby Monteith and and address in Mosman (not the same as the address in the electoral roll, he could have moved). What I know is that Hugh Monteith married Sarah Anne Griffin in New York in 1867. In 1880 they had children Anna, Grace, Sarah, Robert and Hugh. The whole family moved to Chile where Hugh worked as a nitrate miner. The descendants I am sharing information with are descendants of Hugh's daughter Grace. They moved back and forth to the UK, there are entries on shipping lists, and often children were sent back to the UK to boarding school, etc, in the care of other relatives on board ship, so I may know the names of cousins , nephews etc without being able to attach them to parents. We currently believe that Hugh's son Robert was the father of Robert Hugh, and that Robert Hugh was born in Liverpool around 1917- 1919 (there is a birth registration on freebmd). Members of the family often gave Liverpool addresses on shipping lists, there seem to have been friends of the family there. The mother's surname on that particular index entry is Booth. She may have been Sarah, I have an early photo labelled "Robert and Sarah Monteith". Of course I could have the wrong Robert Hugh Monteith, he may either have left Sydney, or died after 1980, in which case he wouldn't show up on the death indexes on line. I am trying to gather information on Robert Hugh MONTEITH who was buried at Macquarie Park Cemetery on 30 April 1976. I am piecing together information on descendants of my great grandmother's brother Hugh Monteith who emigrated to South America. From clues sent to me by a relative - names in photos, old address books etc - I believe that this Robert Hugh Monteith may be one of his grandsons, however before I go to the expense of purchasing a certificate I would like to obtain further details. For instance, would someone on the list be able to locate a death notice or obituary? Or perhaps further details from the headstone? Information such as his age at the time of death, address in Sydney etc would be very helpful to me in strengthening the possibility that I have the right person. Unfortunately my genealogy skills honed through ten years of passionate research do not extend to South America, and I have to resort to trying to trace the family's movements to other places. Thanks in advance for any help offered. Regards Catherine Fitchett Christchurch, New Zealand
