    3. Dear Robert, You can take out a 24 hour subscription to the SMH, or a lot of big libraries subscribe. The Truth would be available at the State Library in Macquarie Street SYDNEY. I doubt elsewhere. It probably isn't a high priority for scanning to the website. If you can not get to State Library, you may be able to get a reel on inter-library loan to your own local library. Ask your Librarian. Sincerely, Bill > > Yes: I now understand there are 3 separate ways to search the SMH: from > memory; I think there are 2 that I can and have searched, whilst the other > I > cannot, as I don't have a subscription to. > > Yes; I have been advised that the Court Sittings are advertised in the > SMH and a fellow lister has been good enough to assist me with, which is > great. > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without > the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. Robert I am sure that at the very least the NSW State Library will have the Truth newspaper, probably on microfiche. The National Library is also likely to hold it. It was sort of the Sunday equivalent of the old Daily Mirror, trashy as all get out, but nevertheless a valuable record. Leith Davis On Sun, Jan 23, 2011 at 12:39 PM, KEMSLEY, Robert N. Good afternoon Bill; Yes: I now understand there are 3 separate ways to search the SMH: from memory; I think there are 2 that I can and have searched, whilst the other I cannot, as I don't have a subscription to. Yes; I have been advised that the Court Sittings are advertised in the SMH and a fellow lister has been good enough to assist me with, which is great. It sounds very much as if it's the "TRUTH" that I am seeking to find the information from and I am not to sure how to go about or if in fact; the "TRUTH" is still available to be searched? 3. Good morning Leith: Sincere thanks for your interest in my posting, which is turning out to be quite interesting and I am learning thereby. I've since checked "Trove", but haven't found what I was seeking and so; have again approached "Ask a Librarian" with the date that the "Decree Nisi" was made. Suggesting perhaps the "Truth" Newspaper? That sounds very interesting re the Notation on the Marriage Certificate, which until now; I'd never heard of or thought of obtaining, but will now consider. Once again: Thank you very much. Robert KEMSLEY

    3. Dear Robert, There was a message posted on the Sydney List just a couple of days ago. Change sites to SMH site for past 1954. I know that there is a list in the SMH each Court Day. You will find the page number either on the front page or page 2 where there is an index of the contents of the paper daily. At one time I think that index may have been on the back page. If I recall correctly the Truth and maybe even the Sunday Mirror, the Sunday after the Court date, or perhaps even the Sunday after would be the one to look at, however I think you may have to make a trip to State Library in Sydney. It is a possibility that a film may be available on inter-library loan to you local library. The time frame of the Divocre Index at State Records is not known to me, but if you go to www.records.nsw.gov.au there is an Archives in Brief (Help Sheet) dealing with Divorce, and that will probably have it in it. I do know that there are only papers there available to the public somewhere into the 1930's. Sincerely, Bill > Good morning Bill; > > Unfortunately; The SMH only goes up to 1954, with the year in question > 1955. > > I would imagine that the "Divorce Index" would cover 1955? but if it > does; I couldn't find the KEMSLEY Divorce I was seeking and which I know > took place in 1955. >

    3. I also have a family divorce in 1955 - it was reported in lurid detail in the Truth - I would look there the day or so after the decree nisi, which was granted at the time of the public court proceedings. The decree absolute was an administrative thing which would receive no publicity. I have another family divorce in 1919, an old handwritten copy of the marriage certificate is inscribed vertically along one side with the information that the marriage ended in divorce, and the date of decree. 3. Good morning Bill; Unfortunately; The SMH only goes up to 1954, with the year in question 1955. I would imagine that the "Divorce Index" would cover 1955? but if it does; I couldn't find the KEMSLEY Divorce I was seeking and which I know took place in 1955. Although I think it was the SMH, I am not 100% sure, as I know at the time; there was the Sun, Mirrow, Telegraph and perhaps the Truth, which also could very well have reported on the Divorce, plus I am not to sure what date would have been reported on; having assumed it to have been the date "Decree Nisi" made "Absolute", but I am now thinking that perhaps it was when the "Decree Nisi" was made, which seems more appropriate? I contacted "Ask A Librarian" who came back with a negative response, as I was seeking the date that the "Decree Nisi" was made Absolute"? Regards; Robert KEMSLEY
