As far as we can tell from the indexes she had no children . If she is the same person marrying Alfred Ernest GILCHRIST in 1890 she would have been approx 40 yo . While not impossible seems rather unlikely to then have 8 children , last born 1904 According to the NSW 1903 electoral roll Alfred Ernest GILCHRIST was a check clerk and lived with wife Christina Ann , Liverpool Road Strathfield Another Alfred E GILCHRIST d 1893 /40207 . Index says Young, but are quite a few errors in rego area names Bye MargM Sydney List Admin
Hi all This intrigued me so I did a bit of searching for Helen Emily and went on to Trove and searched first for Alfred E Gilchrist then Alf E Gilchrist and that is when I struck gold. Before that I searched the Mundia website and found two Trees that stated she had died in 1906. I found a death for a Christina Ann (Lena) Gilchrist in 1906. On the NSW BDM I found that Alfred and Helena/Christina had numerous children. A few of the GILCHRIST births were published in SMH and she is recorded as Lena. Alfred marries again at the start of 1907 and in November that same year a week apart his wife died first and later he died. Perhaps her death registration might provide more details. Hi Matthew On searching the NSW BDM website I found a Helena McClelland marrying a Alfred E Gilchrist in 1890 in St Leonards district Reg 6794. I found two deaths for Alfred E Gilchrist so you could track her residence via the Australian Electoral Rolls on Ancestry and look for a death notice on TROVE - thats if she died before 1954. Have you tried contacting the State Library of NSW as they might have a photo. Shirlee Wellington, NZ ----- Original Message ----- From: "Matthew Hall" <cispt2@gmail.com> To: <aus-nsw-sydney@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, May 07, 2012 2:31 PM Subject: [ANS] Was was Helena Emily MCBERNEY Hi all, I've been puzzling over this for a while, and thought I'd put it out there in case anyone has ideas on how to find out more about this lady (I also just posted what I knew on my blog so you may find that if you google). The woman I'm interested in, Helena Emily MCBERNEY, is not an ancestor, but the second wife of my ancestor Sebastian HODGE (1833 - 1889 Sydney NSW). Sebastian's first wife Harriet nee SMITH died on 24 January 1888 at their hotel, the Commercial Hotel, on the corner of King St and Castlereagh St in Sydney (I have searched in vain for a photo of this hotel). Sebastian and Harriet had nine children from 1855 - 1874. A year after his wife's death, Sebastian re-married, to a widower named Helena Emily McClelland. *The Sydney Morning Herald Thursday 14 February 1889* *Marriages. HODGE - McCLELLAND - February 4, at St. Stephen's Church, Phillip-street, by the Rev. Dr. Steel, Sebastian Hodge, of King-street, Sydney, to Helena Emily McClelland, relict of the late Thomas McClelland.* Twenty years earlier, the NSW BDM shows the marriage of Thomas MCCLELLAND to Helena Emily MCBERNEY (336/1869), registered in Sydney. I can find no reference to their marriage in Australian newspapers, and no children by their marriage. I can also find no likely birth in Australia, not a likely immigration, for a Helena Emily MCBERNEY. But most confusing is what happened to Helen after she married Sebastian? They married on 4 Feb 1889. 10 weeks later, Sebastian HODGE died in the Commercial Hotel, apparently of nephritis and a carbuncle (perhaps the latter precipitated the former). As a result, Helena appears to have inherited her husband's estate (though she may have had independent property). We know this because very shortly afterwards the Commercial Hotel was sold: *The Sydney Morning Herald Friday 9 August 1889**Transfer of hotel license from Helena to J.E.Fallon* Then, three months later is the last record of Helena I can find: *The Sydney Morning Herald* *Thursday 28 November 1889* *METROPOLITAN DISTRICT COURT. In this case J. A. G. D'Alpuget claimed from Helen Emily Hodge, administratrix in the estate of the late Sebastian Hodge, £100 commission on the sale of the Commercial Hotel, King-street. A verdict was given for the defendant, but his Honor granted a stay of proceedings.* After this, I can find no mention in newspapers, no death record, no record of re-marriage. Nothing. Thanks Shirlee, I'd thought for a while that she may have reverted to her previous married name for some reason and married Gilcrist, but the wedding announcement in SMH (15 Oct 1890) states she was "daughter of the late William McLelland". I think I'll have to start answering this by ordering her marriage certificate to Sebastian to get a few details. cheers, matt > > ---------- Forwarded message ---------- > From: "Shirlee Cantwell" <tcantwell@xtra.co.nz> > To: <aus-nsw-sydney@rootsweb.com> > Cc: > Date: Mon, 7 May 2012 17:32:53 +1200 > Subject: Re: [ANS] Was was Helena Emily MCBERNEY > Hi Matthew > > On searching the NSW BDM website I found a Helena McClelland marrying a > Alfred E Gilchrist in 1890 in St Leonards district Reg 6794. Robert, NSW State Records do have divorces on their online index past 1923, just not under the normal "Divorce" heading. Go to home page http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/ click on "Archives Investigator" (in the box "The State Archives") choose "simple search" under "keyword" enter "[name] divorce" and press enter. Certainly listed to 1945 but sorry, don't remember how far the index now goes. This system also works for" [name] probate" as more has been added to the index. I've found the answer by going to State records Home Page and searching there; finding the records are only from 1873 to 1923. Far to early for me. Regards: Robert KEMSLEY
Last year: the list (As was the QLD list) was most helpful in assisting me to find a family Divorce through the Newspapers. I was then referred to the NSW State Records - Divorce List, but: although I know the Divorce took place 1955; I cannot find reference to on the Divorce List and wonder if there is perhaps a Cut Off date and that's why I cannot find on the Divorce List? There is no problem, as I do have copies of the Newspaper Clippings re the Divorce, as well as copies of the file thereon, but wonder why I cannot find reference to the Divorce on the Divorce List?
