    1. Re: [ANS] Question: .. re 'concealment of birth' in 1889
    2. It would depend on which state, but there was an Act passed in NSW Act 17, 1899 in relation to Registration of Births, Deaths, Marriages it states that births had to be registed. It is available online at http://www.legislation.nsw.gov.au/sessionalview/sessional/act/1899-17.pdf Hope this helps. Regards Tracey.

I do believe Alistair that you were the one who told me about school boys making the needles in woodwork classes... can't check because the gremlins have played havoc with my inbox folders and the one relating to that book has disappeared into the ether.... very frustrating! I included it in reference to the whole community being involved in the war effort, it was a snippet of information that I didn't know... all I knew re the involvement of children was growing vegetables where possible and that was in my home town in country Yorkshire, well away from the big centres which were subject to bombing raids. Many thanks for taking the time Caroline

    3. Yes Leith where are they, I would love to see my Gmother's entry, she was born in Nowra in 1900, maybe there would be a clue to where they lived. I lived in Falls Creek for most of my young life and finding historical records where difficult to find locally. Where do they put these things, surely they can't all be in Sydney Margaret Loiterton

I assume you were born in the Nowra 2541 area. Howdy neighbour, I live just uphill from you at Bundanoon 2578. Yes centralisation has a serious downside. 3. I live in the Nowra area, and before and advent of computers and the centralisation of records, to apply for a birth certificate I went along to our local courthouse, where the clerk lifted down a large register (bound book) from the shelf, with a handwritten entry for my birth registration, complete with my father's signature - the extract birth certificate was typed from this page - we never seemed to need a full birth certificate in those days. Those registers have to be SOMEWHERE! 3. Dear Listers, When we buy a Certificate many years after the event, it is often in typewritten format, lacking the hand writing and words of the Informant. Original data is sometimes altered much later, with the Registrar's approval. Is there any way we can gain access to the original page? I am hoping to trace the true lineage of an illegit babe bn NSW 1911 whose surname was much altered years after birth: no clue is seen as to the date of that change nor the identity of the later Informant. And the father name may was entered as UNKNOWN. The currently available cert is endorsed "Evidence has been furnished...." (of the surname change) but that available cert doesn't say who furnished that info nor when. Probably Deed Poll was the doc. furnished, but those Deed docs are apparently not available to us, nor are those Deeds Indexed as far as I know. Most of us do not know HOW to apply for Deed Poll status I s'pose Alistair

I did not see your c.2007 enquiry. My personal "War Service" as a Year 7 schoolboy was subcontracting to a subcontractor, in mfr of trivial parts for Bren Gun Carriers engines, AND the mfr of camouflage net needles. We made the camouflage needles from fine grained timber, "coachwood"??? each approx 17cm long, 3.5 cm wide, 7mm thick..... all edges rounded and sanded to be smooth. Apart from that...... Don't Mention the War!!!!!! ;~) Alistair ======== BCC recips, No Reply thanks.

I just want to thank you all for that help and let you know that the work has finally come to fruition in a book... and included in the list of acknowledgements is "Members of the Sydney NSW 'Rootsweb' online Genealogical Mailing list for answering so many questions on wartime Sydney". 3. Alastair, you could try apply for a transcription rather than an actual certificate. Transcriptions show all information on the original certificate including details that are no longer included such as who was present at the birth,  and any changes made after the original registration [names etc].   I have obtained at least two transcriptions for registrations that have had the surname amended after registration. One change was through the Legitimation Act and the other was a second registration by the fostering father [child was born illegitimate] who claimed the child had not been registered at the time of the birth.   Also if the original birth was registered in a different surname, then that original registration should still be in the BDM  index under the original name.   For example, my grandfather was originally registered under his mothers maiden name in 1893. He had a second birth certificate issued in 1919 under the Legitimation Act in his 'supposed' father's surname. BOTH registrations appear in the NSW BDM Index with different numbers and dates.   Transcriptions can be obtained from a transcription agent. They are listed on the NSW BDM website.  I always obtain transcriptions rather than certificates as they are cheaper and will contain more information.    Feel free to contact me if you don't understand any of the above.   Hope this helps,   Jenny

    3. Hi Matthew I would suggest you order the marriage certificate for Thomas MCCLELLAND as well as the NSW BDM index as her name recorded as Ellen MACBURNEY. On searching the NSW BDM index I did find an Eleanor MCBURNEY born in 1848 to a John and Elizabeth. Good luck with your search.
