Hi Listers, Can anyone help a newbie to Australian research please? I have a death cert. ref. for a James John FIFOOT, Miner, who died 12 july 1921 in Forbes Municipality, NSW. aged 87 years. Is this the same person as "my" James, born in Bristol, England 1835 who became a Mariner and disappears from Bristol area c.1860's - family legend has it he went to Australia. In Greville's P.O. directory for 1872 there is a James J. FIFOOT listed as a Miner in Lumpy Swamp, Forrest Reefs (Bathhurst Area, NSW). Are these men one and the same? Unfortunately no parents names are listed on the death cert. Could sks advise how to check for a Will for James - is anyone interested in the FIFOOT surname? Most grateful for any assistance. Madalyn N.Wales, U.K.
Madalyn, NSW has a probate index to around 1986. If James left a will, his name would be on this index, which is on microfiche and available at many fam hist places in Oz - but don't know if anyone in UK has them. Our State Records holds the original "deceased estate" files for all those listed. They also have "probate packets" (so far released up to about 1940) which generally contain a copy of the will. All this can be viewed free and photocopied at reasonable cost. I could check the index for you - but not for a couple of weeks.
