In Victoria many chinese were unfortunately only refered to quite derogatively on many shipping lists, e.g 50 "Pigtails" or 35 "Chinks" etc. Some shipping lists do have them named. Also here many arrived via South Australia and overlanded to avoid the Poll Tax. A good book, you may have read, is the "Sojourners" by Rolls, is very good on early Chinese immigration to Australia.
