Hi Everyone, Does anyone have any connection with or thoughts about how I might find out more about Andrew and Mary (Mathieson) Alexander. They emigrated to Australia from Glasgow, Scotland, in about 1853. Andrew was a wright in Scotland and is listed as a carpenter on a birth certificate for one of their children, William Arnott, born in January 1859, in Ballarat, Victoria. In addition to four children who were born in Australia, the family also included several children who were born in Scotland. (I have located death certificates for the children who died before 1860.) Thus far, I have been unable to find any record of the family through the official Victoria source after 1860. I know at least one of their daughters, Mary Mathieson Alexander, remained in Australia because she married Matthew Thompson (my gggrandfather) in 1871. I would appreciate any thoughts anyone might have as to where I might now go to check. Also, is there a census available on line for 1860 and 1870. Thank you very much for your time. Regards, Jan Thompson-Kelley

Hi Jan, Seeing how they were in Ballarat in 1859, it seems possible that they were chasing gold. The Comstock Lode of gold and silver was discovered in Nevada, US in 1859. Maybe they hightailed it over there. Have you checked the Ellis Island Immigration records? Also the 1860 US Census? There are no Census records kept at all for Australia, except for convict musters and some of the 1841 census. They may have gone up to Queensland. Have you checked immigration records for them leaving Victoria/Australia? http://mariners.records.nsw.gov.au/ is a good site.
