Is anyone doing the Balcombe or Abel families of early NSW ? Many thanks , Lynn 1. Was Mrs Balcombe Jane Cranston, or Jane Byng, and was she Emma Jane. Wm is listed in family records as married Jane Cranston July 1799, hard to read, could be 20, 26 or 29th; Jane also known as Emma Jane in records. However we have an IGI record of marriage of William Balcombe to Jane Byng 26 July 1799 St Mary-St, Marylebone, St Marylebone, London, And also a Jane Balcombe Christening, 6 July 1800, parents Wm & Jane, St. Marylebone, Saint Mary, Marylebone St, London (family records show Jane born 1800). As both are listed as Marylebone it sounds like the same family. (Didn't find a Christening of Lucia Elizabeth (Betsy), born 1802, or a reference to a Jane Cranston, or Emma Jane Cranston of relevance). 2. Can we find when Betsy Abell went back to London the 2nd time - probably before 1844 when her Recollections of Napoleon was published in London Did mother Jane Emma Balcombe go back to London with Betsy? The family tree does not list birth or death date for Jane Emma and there is no listing in NSW BDM of her death. Can we find Betsy Abell, daughter Elizabeth Abell, probably born about 1822, and mother Jane Emma Balcombe, in the 1841 and 1851 census for London? Betsy said to have died 29 June 1871, age 69. living at 43 Park St Grosvenor Square.
