Hi Margaret Saw your posting re Snell. Last year I wrote a book on James Phillips WEBBER, the first European landholder at Tocal, near Paterson, where I work. According to the 1828 census of NSW, a convict named John SNELL was assigned to James Webber at Tocal. The census shows John SNELL as aged 30, arrived on the ship Norfolk in 1825 with a seven year sentence. He was a protestant, with the occupation of stockkeeper. I think I have a little more information on him in my research notebooks, so let me know if he is an ancestor and I will dig further. Also you may wish to join the Hunter Valley email list, as I am fairly sure one or two people on that list are researching SNELL. Hope this helps.
