    1. [A-NSW-S] WATERS, Joseph
    2. I found Joseph WATERS as I was doing research on my grgrgrandfather's, Francis McCROHAN City of Edinburgh (2), time in Australia. I found an account of Joseph WATERS part in the capture of Jack Jacky in 1841 in Film # 0990733 In Letters Colonial Secretary 1800-1849 which I ordered from my local LDS History Center in Washington State, USA. Joseph WATERS--Norfolk; Year of Arrival--27 August 1829; Where Tried--Middlesea(?); When-4th September 1828; Sentence--14 Years; 3rd March 1831--14 days Treadmill, absent from his Station; 13th May 1831--4 days, Cells, Runaway; 9th September 1831--50 Lashes, Cells, Drunk; 8th July 1831--50 Lashes, Cells, Drunk; 13th August 1831--28 days Treadmill, Drunk; 31 October 1831--10 Days Treadmill, Drunk and Fighting; 27 of February 1832--50 Lashes, Absconding; 20th August 1832--6 months--Stone(unclear writing)--Absconding; 24 February 1834--12 Months--D--D; 16th January 1837--14 days Cells--Absenting. Joseph Waters was not granted a pardon due to his offenses, but was told that he would be kept in consideration for his part in Jacky Jacky's capture. I hope that a Waters researcher will find this information useful, and there are other references to Joseph Water's part in the capture by Edward Gray of Sutton Forest to the Colonial Secretary on the film. My grgrgandfather also spent time on the treadmill and in the cells for drunkeness, must have been the ginger beer other researchers talk so much about, although after he married my grgrgrandmother, he does not appear on the offense rolls. 1. [A-NSW-S] LAMB, George
    2. I have been researching my grgrgrandfather's. Francis McCrohan, life in Australia, and, during this research I came across the name of George LAMB in reference to his part in the capture of Jacky Jacky in 1841. I found the information in: In Letters 1800-1849, Colonial Secretary, New South Wales, Film # 0990733 which I ordered from my local LDS Family History Center in Washington State, USA. Following is the information from article #41/6174 or 9 as the writing is unclear. George LAMB--Roslyn Castle (3); Year of Arrival--15 September 1834; Where tried--Essex; When--30 November 1833; Sentence--Life; 6th October 1836--36 Lashes for Drunkeness. He was recommended for a pardon by Edward Gray of Sutton Forest for his part in Jacky Jacky's capture. There are other documents regarding Jacky Jacky's capture on this film. I hope this information is of help to LAMB researchers, as researchers on the Australian lists I belong to have generously been of great help to me. Mary Margaret

    3. Drar MargM, Thanks for your suggestions re the Barlow family. I have found all that there is on the NSW BDM and also the Sydney Sands IHR pages. Don't know what the Sands PO Directories 1858 - 1933 are. Are they available on the Internet? I have also traced some of the family through probate records. I was rather hoping someone from the same family might be doing some family history research and get in touch. I will certainly try the Sydney mailing list as well. There is still a lot I don't know. Thanks for your interest and trouble in replying. Judith.

    2. Judith Barlow
    3. Hello All, I am looking for descendants of a BARLOW family who lived in Sydney late 1800's onwards. There were brothers JOHN, who was an Architect.THOMAS who married ADELAIDE BREWER in 1892. ARTHUR,who married GERTRUDE BREWERin 1897.WILLIAM, who I think may have married ELIZABETH THACKERAY IN 1899, and CHARLES who married MABEL STEWART in 1903. Some of the brothers were involved with a company JOHN BARLOW & CO.a General Importer and Tea Merchants in Sussex Street, Sydney. This company was started by their father JOHN BARLOW and his wife ELIZA HUGHES. If anyone can help me I would be very grateful. I did think of writing to all Barlows in the Sydney phone book, but the thought was too daunting for me. Hoping to hear from someone who may recognise a name. Thankyou, Judith Barlow.

    1. Re: [A-NSW-S] Cooma Cottage, Yass
    2. Christopher W Grebert
    3. Hi Denise, I found this much, I'll look for some more for you. Regards, Kelly. Pioneering pastoralist Cornelius O'Brien built this single storied colonial cottage in 1835, and between 1839 and 1873 it was home to Australia's great overland explorer Hamilton Hume. A creative owner-builder, Hume added his version of Palladian style wings and a Greek Revival portico. Set in a pastoral landscape the house represents an extraordinary taxonomy of vernacular building techniques and includes a fine, mid-nineteenth century stables outbuilding. Situated on the Yass River, Cooma Cottage is in the heart of some of New South Wales' richest sheep grazing country and during the 1830s, brothers Henry and Cornelius O'Brien joined other pioneers such as Hume in settling these rich, open plains. Cooma Cottage forms part of an important group of rural houses along the Yass River which include Douro and Hardwicke. The plains were an attraction to settlers in the 1820s and settlement of the Yass area was sufficient to warrant the establishment of a post office in Yass by 1835. The National Trust of Australia (NSW) acquired this property in a derelict condition in 1970 and has since carried out an extensive conservation program of restoration, repairs and interpretation. Today Cooma Cottage functions as a house museum and features an exhibition on the life and achievements of the explorer Hamilton Hume. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Naclark" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, March 07, 2004 7:36 PM Subject: [A-NSW-S] Cooma Cottage, Yass > Does anyone know or can give me the history the of Cooma Cottage in Yass, I know it was owned by Hamilton Hume until the 1870's , who owned it after that time.
