    3. Posting this on here as well in case it trips someone elses memory. Hi Peter, this is probably way off the mark, but I'm wondering if you grew up with any GILES family from the Randwick area? There were 13 children in Alfred and Mary GILES's family. Most of the boys either became bricklayers (Henry Giles, Wally Giles, Les Giles) or jockeys (Fred Giles). Interested if these names ring a bell. Alison Gregory (nee GILES)

    3. SOrry reposting - I always forget to put my email in plain text... Hi Melissa....I did not get ur first post but saw your question on Patricia s email. I have a pre 1856 Baptism, death and Birth for NSW. These do not give as much info as later certificates. I think most of the rego numbers start with V if I am not mistaken. Marriages have names of bride and groom, date, where and minister and also witnesses. (1853) Baptism have birth date ceremony date Parish, Parents names fathers occupation and whom performed ceremony. (1834) As this is very early than 1856 it may have changed a little but I don't have one after this time. Death has name age date of death and burial occupation and residence. I my case also had ship that they came to Australia on and in what year. This was a bonus for me. (1843) Hope this helps. 3. We had a big family reunion in September 2004. We have a huge family tree. We had it at Homebush in one of the pavilions and had a sit down lunch etc. We had people sorted into five groups. The original ancestor had five children who had descendants and they were grouped accordingly. I then ran off the ancestor chart for each of those five children and put it on their tables. I asked for any changes to be added to these pages. I use Family Tree Maker so it was easy to do. We had over 2000 people on the tree at that stage. We also had displays of photos and family memorabilia. We had one person from each of the five families give a small talk on their family and then we had a cake which was cut by the oldest person from each group. It was a wonderful success and we also launched our family history book at the same time. 3. Thanks very much Jan for your report on the reunion. I've got most of those ideas in some way or another already thought of but you've added some aspects I hadn't got to in my thinking. I've particularly planned a board of unidentified photos because as you found, I thought it would be a good attention grabber, besides being needed! I had decided to have a separate section to write down your new information and any inaccuracies people found on the display so that the finished display didn't have bits written all over it. I had thought they could put an asterisk on the display to indicate something was being changed or added. Did you find people writing updated info on the actual display went OK? My family history book won't be written until after the reunion for a variety of reasons The primary one is we are raising funds to restore the family graves in the old home town of the family and we plan on a follow up event there in a year or so to unveil the restoration and plant a memorial tree and plaque in a prominent place in town in honour of the family. That will be where we launch the book as well and it should be pretty up to date after the reunion and new contacts being made to keep it up to date. That's the plan anyway! Thanks very much for your help. I really appreciate it. Lynette Lynette Begg P.O. I organised 2 of my family reunions a couple of years ago. As my tree was so Large and also to not confuse people, I split mine up into 4 reunions. Mind You I have still 2 to organise. It was such a huge task for me, I actuallly Sent out invites to all living descendants that I could find. I guess only Being new to this at the time should have asked for help as you are. I had One in a hall which I displayed my tree longways so everyone could see (about 8 metres in length) (FTM). The other I pinned on a board my dad had At home and we stood it under a shelter in the park where the picnic reunion Was held. Taping the tree together took forever and I just about pulled my Hair out. I also took orders for books (FTM). Wow I didn't think sooo many People would order them. However, I did charge to cover cost of printing, Paper and postage. My biggest regret is that I did not get a list of everyone that came, and Photos were taken but now I don't know whom they are of. I met so many People that day, that I couldn't possibly remember all the names and faces And which line they came from. I also had names tags and in brackets family Name origin. I am unsure how you would remember names of people in photos That you have not met before without holding a big sign in front of them. I Guess to just write a list of photos taken at time, so when they load you Can tag them and only hope you haven't left one out. Having people write Down email and home addresses would be a good thing to have for your records I didn't have a lap top at the time but it would have made it so much easier Had I taken one. Good luck. I hope it all goes well. 3. Dear Lynette, Organizing a Family reunion can be fun, but it can also be rather daunting. When my husband and I organised a 'Jackson' reunion in Tamworth in 1993, I asked everyone who was sent an invitation to help out in some way or another. One way was to bring duplicate photos, certificates and short stories. To help name the photos we arranged for large stick-on name tags and photographed them individually as they arrived, so when the group photo was taken, we could name them all. We displayed our Family tree memorabilia along the back of a group of long tables, which was also covered with a clear plastic, and this allowed viewing without damage. A family tree computer printout was displayed in front of the memorabilia with pens supplied to allow people to add or correct what was already there. We used a "Drop Line" Descendancy Chart (also called a wallpaper chart because of its size) to display basic information about people in the family. We also had blank forms with our name and address (very important) for people to complete and return to us once they had updated their family. Although we didn't do it, a good idea is to provide stamped addressed envelopes for the return of these forms. I know this could be expensive, however people feel more obliged to return the completed forms if they think they are beholden to you - even if it is only a postage stamp and envelope. An autograph/comment book was also on display for people to write their comments on the day's event or to write their most interesting short story. A folder of duplicate photos was also on hand where we could swap with other family members. Some of our ideas. Good luck with your reunion. Regards Yvonne PMcQ NSW Australia

    3. Hi Lynette Somewhere (a local hotel I think!) I have seen a family tree, obviously made some years ago, which was done as a circle with the first known ancestors in the middle then the descendants working out to the edge. Think of a pizza wedge with each family getting a slice, bigger families have bigger slices. The advantage being that you can make the circle as big as you like (and keep adding to the outside). The one I have seen is only about 18 inches in diameter (the writing is small in the middle!) and some family members have been missed off but it is an interesting way of doing it. You would of course need to have several 'pizzas" to record different families, here's an idea how about making them actually edible, the catering solved at the same time as the geneaology and of course you could have great fun working out how to represent each family member...is aunty x more of an olive or an aubergine (grin) Hope your reunion goes well Jane -----Original Message----- From: Lynette Begg [mailto:dandlbegg@optusnet.com.au] Sent: Thursday, 20 April 2006 10:23 a.m. To: AUS-NSW-SURNAMES-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Family Reunion experience needed Hello fellow family historians, Has anyone had experience in putting on a family reunion?
