Hi Listers, I am researching a property near Bungonia and Goulburn, since early 20th century named "KOORINGAROO", for most of the 19th century called "COGENBURGH". Does anyone know the names and time period of any owners of this property? Originally granted to the first Colonial Treasurer, William Balcombe in 1825 & 1828 in two lots totalling 2560 acres it grew to over 5000acres by the time of WW II. After the war it was resumed for soldier settlement and divided into three. The portion containing the original house, shearing shed and outbuildings retained the name "Kooringaroo" My parents owned "Kooringaroo" during the 1960s and 70s. I am also interested in any significant happenings in connection with the property and in the origin and meaning of "Cogenburgh", Kooringaroo is an Aboriginal word meaning to "Yell" or "Shout". I, too, am glad to see the list up again. I also need to let the list admin know that I have a new email address - tworobbos@aussiebb.com.au <mailto:tworobbos@aussiebb.com.au> The old one - tworobbos@net-tech.com.au <mailto:tworobbos@net-tech.com.au> should be deleted. Thank you
Hi Group, So glad that this list is up and running again. In the 1960s and 1970s my parents and a brother owned Kooringaroo, a property near Bungonia. Until the beginning of the 20th century this property was known as "Cogenburgh". The original grantee was 'William Balcombe the first Colonial Treasurer. Balcombe had been a British official on the island of St. Helena and was the first "host' of Napoleon when he was sent there. Balcombe's daughter, Betsy, was the subject of a recent book about Napoleon's later years. After the Second World War the property was acquired by the government and split up for Soldier Settlement. The resulting Kooringaroo incorporated the existing homestead, shearing shed and other out buildings. When my family acquired Kooringaroo it was a leasehold but during their tenure they converted it to freehold. I am researching the events that surround this property and would greatly appreciate any information on people and events connected with Cogenburgh and Kooringaroo. Sue, There is an administrative file at the State records Western Sydney Records Centre.Pre 1939, Item number [5/16378.4], Hope this may help. Sadly though you may have to get a researcher to look for you unless you are in Sydney and can get to the records. Hello Sue Have you tried searching the National Library of Australia system called Trove for newspaper articles. I just had a look, searching for "Jellore school" and found a number of articles, including one as follows: Miss Maud Crowe, who died recently at Cabramatta, near Liverpool, was well known in the Mittagong district. During the early nineties she was in charge of the Jellore School (recently destroyed by fire). Some of her pupils now hold good positions in various parts of the State. *Source:*South Coast Times and Wollongong Argus, Friday 31 January, 1930, page 34. Trove is a great free resource. Dear Listers, I am researching a local public school adjacent to where I now live. Information below from: "Government schools of NSW from 1848" School Name : Jellore County: Camden Public School Opening Date: Jun 1886 Closing Date: April 1893 Provisional School Opening Date: Nov. 1897 Closing Date: May 1901 Other NSW Government Records state that the school opened in 1876 and closed in 1915. There are no signs of this school left. Would any listers have any information about this school. The school building may have been destroyed by fire - hence its closure in 1915. There is a Crown Reserved Road (1872)designated for attendance to the school. Hopeful. Sue

I am trying to establish the original grantee(s) to Cogenburgh Estate which was situated near Goulburn and Bungonia on the Southern Highlands of NSW. >From items that I have found on Trove there were people living on or giving their address as the "Cogenburgh Estate" in the 1830's. This property became known as Kooringaroo sometime in the first decade of the 20th century After WW II the property, then approximately 5ooo acres, was split into 3 and became part of the Soldier Settler Scheme. The portion which had the original farmhouse, shearing shed and other farm buildings continued to be called Kooringaroo. My parents and a brother owned Kooringaroo during the 1960's and 70's. The current Kooringaroo is located at 859 Lumley Rd., Bungonia Hts. The indexes at the NSW State Archives are based on the name of the applicant for grant and it seems that without this information I will need to visit Sydney and browse the records although at this time I have no Real Property Description to go on. This presupposes that the name "Cogenburgh" would not have existed prior to the acquisition, it certainly does not come up on a "Key Name Search". Does any Lister have any advice on how I can achieve my purpose? Cheers Peter Melbourne
That is a most interesting development. I have been researching families in that Towrang, Big Hill, Gibraltar, Greenwich Park area for about 20 years and have never come across the name "Manna Fields" or similar. The NSW Dept of Education book on Schools in NSW lists it as "Mannafield, see Towrang", and Towrang lists as being open from June 1885 to August 1968, and being called Mannafield until Aug 1890. The entry also refers to another school in the area, named Murrays Flats, which was open from Feb 1859 to Aug 1910, and was called Towrang until Aug 1890. So it seems the smaller school at Murray Flats was closed and consolidated with Mannafield in 1890, located at Towrang. Thank you David and Jan. Manna Field looks conclusive. Perhaps it was a transcription error. Pity my Michael is not in Greville’s 1872. Lyn

Lyn, A search in Trove Newspapers brought no likely results but a search for Manna Field brought mention of a railway station near Towrang and Goulburn. There was also a school there in 1874. From train timetables in Trove, Manna Field and Towrang could be the same place and are 10 miles from Goulburn David Field Hello everyone. >Hello Ken I very much doubt it but anything is possible. Albert Wheatley moved to Sydney in about 1920 and had three sons who lived on in Sydney. If I get back further than Albert is could well be that there were other Wheatley's in Goulburn who could have still been there in the 1920-40 period. I will let you know what I come up with.
