Hi Cathy, It appears I have other new found cousins. I will contact them and give them more details of George's parents and the circumstances of their coming to Australia. Our researchers in UK have more details now but are concentrating on the other branches of our families at present. They are the ones with less "colourful" characters perhaps. Any one else interested in the Fowler and Pender families of Ulladulla and Milton and Bega is also welcome to share in whatever research we come up with. Simply contact me (or Cathy) and I will forward it privately or we can place it on the net if it is not too detailed or boring for the others. George was the blacksmith for Milton and moved there from the original settlement at Dapto where they had the blacksmith's shop on the highway. They came to Milton via the Kangaroo Valley area. George's daughter Elizabeth Fowler was my mother's grandmother. Mother still tells stories about her and the family. George's wife was Maria Eggleton daughter of Sophia Eggleton and William Eggleton first Constable at Campbelltown. The pioneer history there commemorates them. William was born in the colony to First Fleet parents who were married in the second lot of marriages performed in the colony. The first marriages were five couples married on 10 February 1788 and the Eggletons were married on 17 February 1788. They were the seventh couple married in Australia. Sophia Eggleton nee Ruggless (Her father was 3rd Fleet) is buried at Milton C of E Cemetery along with a number of Fowlers and Penders. Her mother was Mary Armstrong. Mary was transported with her friend for the crime of taking a shawl to the value of approximately three pence three farthings. A third girl also of seventeen was acquitted. The three shawls were estimated at a value of ten pence. George Fowler came free with his mother and family on the Barrell 2. His mother was quite a woman. I have the ships surgeon's reports of the trip now describing her as frail and of nervous disposition but her deeds belie the description. She was a strong and dedicated mother and wife. Her family owes a lot to her dedication and endurance. She was a true pioneer. Because of her there are many Fowlers and their relatives and descendents in Australia. The true story is very interesting. But that's for another time.
