A Gunning resident recently showed me where remnants of several cottages existed on Stoney Hole Creek, near the road to Gundaroo. He also stated that the original main road from Goulburn to Yass passed by that area. Old Parish maps appear to show parts of a disused road leaving approximately the present highway near Mt Pleasant, crossing Lerida Creek near its junction with Cullarin Creek and heading south, but only parts of it are shown. A map of 1881 notes that permission had been given to close the visible section. Does anyone have any information on the location of the original southern road in the vicinity of Gunning. It appears from birth records I have, and from a directory dated 1872, that there was, at least in the 1850s and 1860s, a settlement known as Stoney Hole, near Gunning. Any information would be welcome. John Waters Melbourne
