Was it unusual for an Irish family to go back to Ireland and then return to Australia? It must have been a huge effort in those days. Were they well to do? Kaye www.bananatv.com/genealogy ----- Original Message -----
Hi Just sticking my nose in again 1 of my lot came to OZ and life wasnt bad until w hit a bit of a depression and things got a bit scarcer than they already were ...a lot of folk coming into the country carrying little with them and a very few surplies were coming thru.......a case of needing money to pay for goods that could well be lost enroute was a very costly exercise...many MONEY MEN were charging extremely high rates *insurnace issues arnt new* So not lots but qute a few families went home only to find that what they remembered was tainted with sadness of leaving home and what they had hoped for was dashed by famine...Ireland just didnt have 1 big famine if you look thru the history it would seem at least once a decade at least 2 seaons were bleak So thye would return to the only place they had ever called home a little better prepared maybe but with more of their family I also had family cme fromIreland in 1840..go to America for the goldrush and then return to OZ not so easy to trace these folk....I had spent ages looking for a town or property in S E NSW called California..... I can but giggle thinking of the families going back home and the tots hopping round the place showing their family in Ireland what a kangaroo did or describing how huge an emu was or how funny little spikey things waddled round in search of ants...I can certainly remember my children trying to show their grandma......and she did know what they looked like. Sandra The McMahons of Wollongong are listed as being born to Hugh or William Hugh and Hannah, not Annie. I have sent the BMD site for you so that you can follow through on marriages etc. Regards Neville Bellambi (a Wollongong suburb) NSW sandra armstrong wrote: > > Wm Hugh McMahon was born in Donegal Irl abt 1832 and Annie was born in Co Tyrone Irl abt 1832. Hi I will apologise in adavance for not offering to helpout but Im making lots of trips to Wollognongs palliative care unit right now. The best advice that I could give you is to write a note to Wollongong City Council Cemeteries Berkeley Rd Berkeley and ask them to check for you Also the local newsaper is called the Illawarra Mercury Tho it is a small paper your library may have copies for you to check BDM There are lots of McMahons in the Wollongong ph book. you could get addresses and drop a few an note there were really no services in Wollongong back then so the fact that he was in Rookwood means little...it could mean that he was taken there due to his health and body not returned to Wollognong due to the costs ...a very long cart journey and and no refridgeration etc...tho the family would have been allowed to take the body if burial arrangements had been made in advance Christene ----- Original Message ----- From: "Neville Arrowsmith" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, January 16, 2004 3:11 PM Subject: Re: William Hugh McMahon and Annie Devine > Sandra > > The McMahons of Wollongong are listed as being born to Hugh or William > Hugh and Hannah, not Annie. > > I have sent the BMD site for you so that you can follow through on > marriages etc. > > Regards > > Neville > > Bellambi (a Wollongong suburb) NSW > > sandra armstrong wrote: > > > > Wm Hugh McMahon was born in Donegal Irl abt 1832 and Annie was born in Co Tyrone Irl abt 1832.
