Hi Col and all Family research is very quiet just now - too much study and not enough time! Thanks for continuing to keep an eye out for me! The news I had was that my family now has an interest in the original Watt & Mathie sawmill at Wandandian, and one of the last remaining mill workers' cottages in NSW is being restored, much to my delight. I'm also digging around the development of skis at the Kiandra goldfields. My father before he died passed on to me a gem of a piece of oral history that I'm trying to keep alive now that the direct connection has gone. My three shipwright Davis ggg uncles were at the ski fields and apparently made their stake at Kiandra by making skis for the miners, the first skis in Australia. Always thought it was odd that 3 young Irish-Australians dreamed up skis but have since found out that it was Norwegian miners that brought the idea and originally tried barrel staves. Now can see how they must have got together - the first thing shipwrights learn is how to steam and bend wood. Heaven knows how I will get any substantiation or evidence - any ideas would be gratefully appreciated. I'm thinking of writing a paper for the Australian Forest History Society if I can find enough material (in my spare time????)
