Hello Bob. For this family, it seems that the correct surname is ELTHERINGTON; but I have no doubt that there will also be families around the world who have a surname of ETHERINGTON. In the Bega/Eden area there is a HETHERINGTON family (which, although I don't know any of them, I do know that they are related back in Fermanagh to my RAMSEY family. With so many of us dropping the "H" in our speech, it is easy to see how HETHERINGTON and ETHERINGTON might at some time be found to be the same family. However the "L" in ELTHERINGTON seems a bit more problematic than that. I don't have ready access to a Surname Dictionary, to see what they migth say about it. Google might also give some indications. But in the listings which I have made for Bega/Eden etc., my suspicion is that in most cases when they have spelled it ETHERINGTON in the BDM INDEXES, that it might well be a TRANSCRIPTION error. (However there is also the possibility that what I have lumped in with ELTHERINGTON, might well be HETHERINGTONs -- mmmm??? must remember to check that sometime. Thanks for the thought!)
