Hello Bob. As you can see below, in my Bega/Eden indexes extracted from the NSW BDMs on-line, I have a William H (note that H) LESLIGHT who married an Annie THOMAS in 1905 in Sydney. I then tried to chase them through those indexes outside of the Far South Coast; and came up with the HYPOTHETICAL listing below. BDM Regn. No. Year Surname Given Name/s Father's Forenames Mother's Forenames District Notes Death Date Death Place Family of William H. LESLIGHT & Annie THOMAS (of Sydney) M 3094 1905 LESLIGHT WILLIAM H THOMAS ANNIE SYDNEY M of parents below? 6 yrs after Elsie's B in 1899? B 32218 1899 LESLIGHT ELSIE M WILLIAM H ANNIE MILTON D 14012 1899 LESLIGHT ELSIE M WILLIAM H ANNIE MILTON B 9276 1901 LESLIGHT ENID I WILLIAM H ANNIE SYDNEY B 10301 1903 LESLIGHT WILLIAM F WILLIAM H ANNIE BEGA D 9364 1903 LESLIGHT WILLIAM Frederick WILLIAM H ANNIE BEGA 6-Aug-1903 Wandella So this would APPEAR to indicate that it was indeed a William H LESLIGHT who married Annie THOMAS. BUT this hypothesis also seems to indicate that this couple had at least 3 children born in the 6 or 7 years prior to that marriage. Accordingly my hypothesis may be incorrect on this issue of the marriage. Therefore there is a chance then that the index marriage entry might not be for them. (For example, they might have married overseas prior to coming to Australia, or interstate, or elsewhere in NSW and I haven't picked that up). In which case the online index might be a typographical error, and the husband might indeed be William Ernest LESLIGHT. I just conducted an on-line search for the deaths of William LESLIGHT, and found the death of William Ernest LESLIGHT in 1947 at Newtown in Sydney. That death entry gives William Ernest's parents as Jacob and Mary. So here is my -- again HYPOTHETICAL -- listing, for Jacob and Mary LESLIGHT, who also appear in the Bega and Eden areas (and NOTE the various surname spellings): BDM Regn. No. Year Surname Given Name/s Father's Forenames Mother's Forenames District Notes Death Date Death Place Family of Jacob LISLIGHT / LESLIGHT & Mary / Mary A. DOWNEY M 2258 1869 LACKEIGHT JACOB DOWNEY MARY EDEN see Leslight D 16182 1917 LESLIGHT MARY Ann WILLIAM BEGA Mother's D? think so 9-Oct-1917 Bermagui B 9405 1870 SECHLIGHT MARY S JACOB MARY EDEN see Leslight B 19648 1872 LISLIGHT JACOB JACOB MARY WOLLONGONG B 19031 1874 LESLIGHT WILLIAM ERNEST JACOB MARY SHOALHAVEN D 13422 1947 LESLIGHT WILLIAM ERNEST JACOB MARY NEWTOWN B 21998 1878 LISLIGHT EDWARD JACOB MARY SHOALHAVEN D 9542 1878 LISLIGHT EDWARD JACOB MARY SHOALHAVEN B 23173 1879 LISHLIGHT SAMUEL MICHAEL JACOB MARY SHOALHAVEN B 27453 1882 LISHLIGHT MARGARET G JACOB MARY SHOALHAVEN B 32396 1885 LISLIGHT FREDERICK B JACOB MARY A SHOALHAVEN B 20902 1888 LESLIGHT ALEXANDER A JACOB MARY A BEGA So where does this leave us with your questions? 1. The 1905 marriage MIGHT be a typographical error, and therefore MIGHT in fact be between William E. LESLIGHT and Annie THOMAS. 2. I did an online search for the marriage of a William *ight, between 1880 and 1950, and came up with 790 hits. Just very quickly skimming through them, I cannot find a marriage up to the early 1900s for anyone who looks like he might be William E. LESLIGHT; so it may be that he was unmarried. 3. A search of the online indexes found this death, which you obviously also have for Annie LESLIGHT in 1946: BDM Regn. No. Year Surname Given Name/s Father's Forenames Mother's Forenames District Notes D 30371 1946 LESLIGHT ANN FREDERICK MARY NEWTON My Bega/Eden listings do not include any family of Frederick and Mary THOMAS, so I cannot double-check this. Therefore, it would seem to me that if you are able to afford to purchase the DEATH certificate for Annie LESLIGHT in 1946, that should tell you who she married, etc. I am sorry that as I have no access to any certificates for any of these events, I am unable to provide any further information on anyone mentioned here. By the way, I just had a quick look at the Australian National Archives site, and searched for LESLIGHT, with 7 hits; one of them was for the Naturalisation in 1913 of a Jacob LESLIGHT -- presumably the father above of William Ernest. Papers for that naturalisation might get you back another generation if you should need to follow that line -- as of course his death certificate should also. Also: many years ago I found the office staff for each denomination at Rookwood cemetery to be VERY helpful. It is possible that if you can telephone them (yes, I know that it is STD from Bribie Island -- but telling them that might also help) with those burial details, they might be willing to look up their computer and give you details of others buried in the same plot area, who might not have headstones. That might also help you to put the puzzle together. I wish you good luck in your continued searching; and apologise that I am not able to give any concrete answers to your questions. I'm trying to establish a link with William Ernest Leslight and Ann Leslight (nee Ann ??). William is buried in Rockwood Cemetery in the same grave as Ann ???). My question to the list is "Is Ann Leslight (died 02 Dec 1946 in Newtown) in fact Ann Thomas, daughter of Frederick Thomas and Mary ????? and did they marry 1905 in Sydney?" Any help appreciated. ...
Hi Ray Thanks for looking at my Dilemma. I have the Rookwood CD and William and Ann LESLIGHT are in the same plot. In fact they are the only LESLIGHTS in Rookwood. The inscriptions are Our Father and Our Mother. I question the NSW BDM's middle initial, as a badly written E could be an transcribed as a H. Ah well..... maybe someone else has these people in their trees.
