The Illawarra Mercury, Thursday, June 24, 1858 page 2 The Country BRAIDWOOD [From the Braidwood Dispatch] INQUEST.--An inquest was held on Thursday last at Larbert, before G. F. Codrington, Esq., Coroner, and a jury of nine, on view of the body of Ellen Hawkins. Henry Hawkins, being sworn stated, he was a lime burner, at Larbert. He went to the sale of the Cottage of Content on Tuesday, and wishing to purchase some things, went home for money, when he found deceased, his wife, sitting on the window sill. She said she was dreadfully burnt. Witness put her to bed and went for assistance. Failing to get any, he returned home again. He then sent to Dr. Codrington, who had seen her, for something to dress her wounds with. Deceased died about an hour from the time the doctor saw her; and before the witness got the dressing; she was sensible to the last. She was well when he first left her. Deceased had been subject to fits for four years; she had not been drinking and was not in the habit of drinking. Thomas Christian being sworn; stated he was a laborer, and resided at Larbert; he heard that the deceased had been burnt. He and his wife went to her house and found the deceased severely burnt about the back and chest. She complained of thirst, but not of pain. She did not say how it happened. He had never heard of her husband having ill-used her. She had been subject to fits, and he believed was fond of a glass of liquor. Ann Christian's testimony was to the same effect as her husband's; she dressed deceased's wounds. Verdict, accidental death. (NB- there doesn't seem to be any surviving Braidwood Dispatch from that time period, but W.F. Pascoe has the Goulburn Herald on their website from July 1848 to Dec 1907, so there could also be a mention in there. Thanks to Wendy for this report- The Illawarra Mercury and Kiama Examiner (both published in this time period) had regular news columns from other areas of the state including Bega, Braidwood and Goulburn.
