Hi, I'm just new here, first timer. We are coming to Australia for the first time in June and I would like to trace descendants of my grandmother's eldest sisters in order to show them the family tree I have done and to meet them and fill in the missing link. This is preceded by quite an interesting story which I would like to tell. My great grandmother Catherine McMillan came from a wealthy family I believe in Ayshire. She eloped in 1855 to Tasmania with the Irish stablehand John Clair employed on her parents property and was disowned by the family. She married in 1856 and had two daughters Sarah Margaret Clair and Christina Eliza Clair. They emigrated to NZ in 1861 where there were six more children born. Then Catherine ran off with my great grandfather and had six more children, the middle of which was the child of the local town mayor. My grandmother was the youngest of the 14 children. When my grandmother was 4, Catherine left the children again, this time going to work at Larnach's Castle, Dunedin where she was a cook. During the 1870 when the two eldest girls were in their teens, the two girls returned to Australia and were believed to be living in the Sydney area. It is possible that a third daughter b 1864 also went to Australia with them. Her name was Mary Ann or Mary Hannah Clair. In 1910 a family member went to Sydney to try and find the three girls with no luck. I found a marriage in 1878 in Sydney for a Sarah Margaret Clair to a Charles James Burton with three children born in 1880s apparently or possibly to this couple, but the two female children died young. I also found a death of a Sarah Margaret Burton in 1899 in Sydney, parents John and Catherine. I have found no trace of the other two sisters. This is possibly one of the missing children, but I don't know how to find out if it was a child called Sarah Margaret Burton with the parents called John and Catherine Burton or a married woman with the parents John and Catherine Clair, as no parents surnames were given. Is there anyway of finding out before I order a certificate of death? Can anyone help. I believe she was buried at Rookwood Cemet. Sydney.
