This appeared in the Illawarra Mercury 7 September 1915: "A volunteer named George Kelly was rejected at Goulburn last week on account of having overlapping toes. On being assured by the medical man that he would be passed if the toes were removed. Kelly at once underwent an operation, and is now anxiously awaiting his discharge from hospital." I don't know if he was accepted after this, but he certainly was keen.
