    1. Re: Was Dapto part of Windsor 1830s?

    3. Hi Terri and Bryan I'm no expert but I have done a bit of work on my husband's 12 convicts and also indexed all the Picton Bench books. The districts I gather were police districts. Windsor is a long way from Dapto and there are several districts in between so if he was restricted to Windsor, the only way he sould be in Dapto without an official re-assignment out of area was if Larkin had a property in each district and he was sent between them depending on the amount of work at the time on each property. One of my hubby's convicts was assigned to Camden but he often went to the master's property at Yass for harvesting. A lot of assignments were not registered in Sydney. In the Picton Bench Books, it seemed there was a register of likely masters at the Bench. Quite often you see notations of a convict returned to govt and re-assigned to someone else in the area. Also I noticed in the Bench Books when one master had a lot of work on he borrowed convicts from another landowner. This was only registered when a convict was being naughty and brought up to the Bench for punishment. I would seriously consider you may well have the wrong man. Were there more than one convict John McDERMOTTs? Was the John MCDERMOTT in Dapto definitely a convict?
