Leith, Norman W. Clarke wrote a book last year "Kiandra - Gold Fields to Ski Fields" ISBN 0-646-46337-3. I looked in the index but there is no Davis listed. However he may have come across something during his research on this book. I am afraid I no longer have his address but he is from Sydney so maybe you might have some luck looking up the white pages for a Norman W. Clarke in the Sydney region. Hi Col and all Family research is very quiet just now - too much study and not enough time! Thanks for continuing to keep an eye out for me! The news I had was that my family now has an interest in the original Watt & Mathie sawmill at Wandandian, and one of the last remaining mill workers' cottages in NSW is being restored, much to my delight. I'm also digging around the development of skis at the Kiandra goldfields. My father before he died passed on to me a gem of a piece of oral history that I'm trying to keep alive now that the direct connection has gone. My three shipwright Davis ggg uncles were at the ski fields and apparently made their stake at Kiandra by making skis for the miners, the first skis in Australia. Always thought it was odd that 3 young Irish-Australians dreamed up skis but have since found out that it was Norwegian miners that brought the idea and originally tried barrel staves. Now can see how they must have got together - the first thing shipwrights learn is how to steam and bend wood. Heaven knows how I will get any substantiation or evidence - any ideas would be gratefully appreciated. I'm thinking of writing a paper for the Australian Forest History Society if I can find enough material (in my spare time????) Hi Listers, I have a connecting with the Mortlock family on the Monaro Pioneers website www.monaropioneers.com/mortlock-e.htm. The information I am interested in was submitted by Richard Mortlock, Cecilie Mortlock, but their email address are bouncing back to me. Would any fellow listers know a correct email address or where I might make contact with them. Thank you in anticipation. Cheers, Laraine Goodworth

Hi, Col Just thinking of you - haven't been able to do too much recently as just too busy. I hope to go back to UK in late May to get the infn from my missing file and start again. I was very annoyed about ancestry.co.uk: I subscribe, but when I tried to access original documents, like census returns, I got this flickering attempt and it didn't work. I tried everything, carrying out their recommendations over 6 months. It would work once and then the same problem. Finally, I got good info and did as they suggested: it worked, except my virus checker, Norton, kept giving these horrific warnings and suggested I must reverse: turns out the only way to cure the problem was to remove the security checks, and a.c.u agrees this is the case. Hello Jenny Percy is ours In 1868 Percy and his wife Hannah Maria were mid way in their childbearing years with child no. 6 of 9 born in January 1868. With a tribe of 6 kids under 8 years of age some HELP would have been appreciated by Hannah. Maybe the 6 kids wore Louisa away to nothing so she dissappeared for a while??? ( :) What can I tell you about the family Louisa went to? Percy was an army brat and came to oz as a 2 yr old - his father was Captain of the 50th regiment of Foot his family spent time in Norfolk Island as well as the south coast where William Sheaffe was supervising road gangs etc. Hannah was the daughter of a well regarded merchant marine Captain who explored unknown waters on the Australian north and west coast in the normal course of his work day in the 1810's and 1820's Regards Glynis > Message: 1 > Date: Thu, 19 Apr 2007 22:10:31 +1000 > From: "Jenny Chester" <jennychester@bordernet.com.au> > Subject: [NSW-SE] Percy Hale Sheaffe of Milton and apprentice Louisa > Winter > To: "AUS-NSW-SE" <AUS-NSW-SE@rootsweb.com> > Message-ID: <005e01c7827b$be2f55f0$6a82100a@jennyc> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" > > Hi there > > I have just found Cathy Dunn's document on Percy Hale Sheaffe via > Greville's Post Office Directory 1872 for Milton. Hi there I have just found Cathy Dunn's document on Percy Hale Sheaffe via Greville's Post Office Directory 1872 for Milton. I am interested in this man as an ancestor I am researching - Louisa Winter - was apprenticed to him around 1868 but then disappears. I have found a possible marriage for Louisa, birth of a child and then a possible death for Louisa but will need to get the transcriptions to check. In the meantime if anyone has come across Louisa or the Sheaffe family please contact me off list. >From the Randwick Asylum for Destitute Children - Registers of Inmates June 1852-1915 (7/3796 SRNSW reel 1865) I have the following information: 9 Nov 1859 Louisa and Sarah Winter aged 7 and 4 years, Protestants, were admitted to the Destitute Children's Asylum Randwick. According to the records they were "deserted by father, mother a worthless character. Sisters to Geo Winter page 202 who was subsequently received." 30 Dec 1868 Louisa Winter aged 13 (appears to be incorrect as admission record indicates she would have been 16) was apprenticed to Mrs Stenhouse, returned to the Destitute Children's Asylum, Randwick and then reapprenticed to Mr PH Sheaffe at Milton. cheers Jenny Bruny Island TAS

After a long break I am back looking for my ancestor John TERRY and getting desperate. He married a Sarah WEST in 1836 in Sydney and their place of residence was St Vincent. They had at least 2 children baptised in the Yass C of E 1. Martha Terry born 21 Apr 1840 baptised 14 May 1840 2. Matilda Jane baptised 3 Feb 1841 Their place of residence is listed as "Cookup" Tumut, (maybe this should read Gocup) and father John is listed as a Labourer. On John & Sarah's marriage record two of the witnesses were William & Mary BERRY and I think these are the same couple that married in 1834 at the C of E Goulburn area (MC early church record). I was hoping if I could connect John TERRY and William BERRY (ex soldiers or convicts) I may have a starting point as all my leads so far have come to a dead end. There is a William BERRY who died in Yass in 1889 maybe someone has him in their tree. The John TERRY in Bombala is NOT mine as it seems he married in England. Hoping someone can help knock a small hole in my brickwall TIA Lynne SA
Hi Cathy Thank you for this informative site. Could you please clarify the following for me: Under William RUTTER is William died 17 Jun 1812, Parramatta NSW, Buried: St Johns Parramatta NSW However in "The Parramatta Cemeteries St John's" by Parramatta and District Historical Society, page 148, is the transcription of his headstone with the following note: "Headstone incorrectly cut. William Rutter died 31-12-1912. His will is dated 21-12-1812" This date of death would fit better with his burial date of 2-1-1813. On http://www.ulladulla.info/history/rutter/hindmarsh.html The first child of Cecilia Sophia RUTTER and Michael HINDMARSH is listed as George Robert HINDMARSH however when the link Further info on the HINDMARSH Family is clicked one is taken to http://www.rootsweb.com/~nswgdhs/18315.htm where their first child is listed as George John HINDMARSH Do you know which is correct? Do hope the reunion goes well Margaret ----- Original Message ----- From: "South Coast Promotions" <office@scpromotions.com.au> To: "AUS-NSW-SE-L-rootsweb.com" <AUS-NSW-SE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, April 08, 2007 18:42 Subject: [NSW-SE] William Rutter Family Reunion Hindmarsh, Kendall, Cooper - 14/15 April > www.ulladulla.info/history/rutter > > In the 1850s William Rutter three daughters were living in grandest > homesteads around Kiama, Cecilia Sophia Rutter who married Michael > Hindmarsh at Alne Bank Gerringong, Caroline Blake Rutter who married Thomas > Surflett Kendall at Barroul and Happy Villa Kiama, and Catherine Newell > Rutter who married Robert Cooper and later Thomas Chapman was at Hartwell > House. > > Of the 48 grandchildren of William Rutter, the majority of them lived here > in the Milton Ulladulla District and raised their families. Hi Cathy & Lyn Thanks a million for your help with Sarah and John EVANS. I did have Benjamin and Mary as possible parents but couldn't get any confirmation. The IGI "wrong parents" put a spoke in the wheel. Thanks again. I think now I will go and watch the football and I don't care who wins. Hi Listers I'm looking for birth date/location for Sarah Ann BROOK who was the second wife of John EVANS. John was born in Cornwall during 1820 and died 1901 Milton. His first wife Mary CALLOWAY died 1866 in Kiama NSW. From here on it gets very strange. NSW BDMs have a marriage 1872 Ulladulla between John and Sarah. IGI have Sarah Ann BROOK birth as Milton BUT shows parents as Robert CORK and Elizabeth CC PEARCE??? The NSW BDMs deaths show Sarah's parents as Benjamin and Mary. Can anyone help me clear this up? www.ulladulla.info/history/rutter In the 1850s William Rutter three daughters were living in grandest homesteads around Kiama, Cecilia Sophia Rutter who married Michael Hindmarsh at Alne Bank Gerringong, Caroline Blake Rutter who married Thomas Surflett Kendall at Barroul and Happy Villa Kiama, and Catherine Newell Rutter who married Robert Cooper and later Thomas Chapman was at Hartwell House. Of the 48 grandchildren of William Rutter, the majority of them lived here in the Milton Ulladulla District and raised their families. They include the Wilford, Kendall, Ewin, Buchan, Warden, Browne, Turnbull, Wilson, Cooper, Millard families who also connect with many other pioneer families of the region. Cathy Dunn
