My family interest is the Woods family from the Kiama/Illawarra district. George Woods born in 1855 was the son of John Woods and Alice Kennedy. I don't have any information regarding John Woods or Alice Kennedy, but I believe John was born in England around 1820, and Alice came from Ireland, and was born around 1830. I would be happy to swap information with any descendants. Regards, Lyn Fannin. NSW
I have been following my great aunts line and just got a copy of her death certificate. i have had a real break through with her two natural children but have realised that she also adopted 4 children as well as fostering. I have obtained approximate birthdates of the four children Peggy(born abt 1924), Ronnie (born abt 1928) , Paul (born about 1929) and John (born about 1929)from where they are listed on the death certificate but am unsure where to find more information. Can anyone help or tell me where to go? I haven't dealt with adoptions before. Tassie Bev
Would anyone know if correct birth anmes are used on electoral rolls in say 1903 as trying to pinpoint if my GGm was ina particular house at that time. it seems strange as her husband is listed at another address. Tassie Bev
thanks vt, for copy of electoral roll and that confirms I was right. Bessie Leatheam lived at Smiths Lane. However Don't electoral rolls usually have correct birth name or weren't they so particular in 1903 so it should not be Elizabeth Leatheam (nicknamed Bessie) and my GGM and also her husband is listed as living at Kinghorn Street, and yet she should be on the electoral roll. I am confused as her son married Bessie Minikin in 1916 and she is usually the Bessie Leatheam, whereas other one Elizabeth Leatheam (born Elizabeth Smith - daughter of John & Jane Eliza Smith) Maybe Elizabeth was at home with her parents temporarily. I don't have the electoral roll myself but couold someone check if John and Jane Eliza Smith were living in Smiths Lane. I know also that John Smith built the first house in Nowra and unsure if that was in Smiths Lane. They later lived at Violet Banks on the corner of East and Junctions Street > > Tassie Bev > To post a message to the AUS-NSW-SE mailing list, send an email to > AUS-NSW-SE@rootsweb.com. > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > AUS-NSW-SE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message > > > -- > No virus found in this incoming message. > Checked by AVG Free Edition. > Version: 7.5.476 / Virus Database: 269.11.19/953 - Release Date: > 14/08/2007 5:19 PM > >

Hi everyone., Not been on for a while owing to a new email address and trouble suscribing. Have also been on a visit to the area and attended the History Fair. Have query about electoral roll records which talk about the house in Smith Lane(there is only one at the end of Jane Street) I have a Bessie Leatheam living there in 1903, who I thought was John Athol Henry Leatheam's (one of Nowra's mayors) wife but on further checking I notice that they did not get married until 1916 and she was born 1893 so would have been 8 years old at that time. she was born as Bessie Minikin and married John Athol Henry Leatheam (known as Athol). His mother was also known as Bessie although born Elizabeth smith but if it was her why is her husband ( Stephen Henry Leatheam) down as living in Worrigee Street. Am not even sure where I got electoral records. i think from paid research from Kiama History Centre but wondered if anyone has access to check electoral rolls and if not some ideas of how I could chase it up. i have a photo of the house (as it is today)and was adding it to my file but am now confused as to which family lived there. thanks everyone, Tassie Bev
Hello Lois Great to hear from you again, I have learned so much about Henry Hawkins since you first replied to my original question about Charles & Harriet Snow. Dear Chris, "A CERTIFICATE BY JUSTICES TO AUTHORISE THE GRANTING OF A LICENSE shows: ............. The Publican's General Licence for the House known by the Sign of the Cottage of Content situate (sic) Larbert in the said District and Colony" was granted to John Stephens on 17.4.1860. Thanks to Wendy for this report- The Illawarra Mercury and Kiama Examiner (both published in this time period) had regular news columns from other areas of the state including Bega, Braidwood and Goulburn. Later, when many left the coast for the Northern Rivers the Mercury and Kiama Independent included news items from those areas Lorraine ----- Original Message ----- From: "Wendy Kuzela" <kelt@aapt.net.au> To: <aus-nsw-se@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, August 10, 2007 11:05 AM Subject: Re: [NSW-SE] Ellen Hawkins > The Illawarra Mercury, Thursday, June 24, 1858 page 2 > The Country > BRAIDWOOD > [From the Braidwood Dispatch] > INQUEST.--An inquest was held on Thursday last at Larbert, before G. I am looking for information about the families of Edward Mortimer Travers and Eliza Owen. They were living in the Braidwood area from about 1840, also Mogo Moga and Nerriga. Other names in this family tree are Kenton/Kenyon, Bill, Harrington, Shepherd, McCarron and other families. Any help would be very much appreciated Thanking you for your time Genie
The Illawarra Mercury, Thursday, June 24, 1858 page 2 The Country BRAIDWOOD [From the Braidwood Dispatch] INQUEST.--An inquest was held on Thursday last at Larbert, before G. F. Codrington, Esq., Coroner, and a jury of nine, on view of the body of Ellen Hawkins. Henry Hawkins, being sworn stated, he was a lime burner, at Larbert. He went to the sale of the Cottage of Content on Tuesday, and wishing to purchase some things, went home for money, when he found deceased, his wife, sitting on the window sill. She said she was dreadfully burnt. Witness put her to bed and went for assistance. Failing to get any, he returned home again. He then sent to Dr. Codrington, who had seen her, for something to dress her wounds with. Deceased died about an hour from the time the doctor saw her; and before the witness got the dressing; she was sensible to the last. She was well when he first left her. Deceased had been subject to fits for four years; she had not been drinking and was not in the habit of drinking. Thomas Christian being sworn; stated he was a laborer, and resided at Larbert; he heard that the deceased had been burnt. He and his wife went to her house and found the deceased severely burnt about the back and chest. She complained of thirst, but not of pain. She did not say how it happened. He had never heard of her husband having ill-used her. She had been subject to fits, and he believed was fond of a glass of liquor. Ann Christian's testimony was to the same effect as her husband's; she dressed deceased's wounds. Verdict, accidental death. (NB- there doesn't seem to be any surviving Braidwood Dispatch from that time period, but W.F. Hi Chris The Gouldurn or Queanbeyan newspapers could have a write up of the accident. The Braidwood newspapers from this period, I don't think have survived. The Inquests also haven't survived, only the index. Dear Chris, If you go to www.records.nsw.gov.au and find Archives in Brief No. 4 that will tell you all about Inquests. I would not hold out great hopes of papers from 1858 though.
