In 2004 there were of posts on several genealogy sites by a JP Perry with a now-defunct "dingoblue" address. He was reseraching the Gilberts , as am I . My wife is a descendant of Emily's half brother Thomas Aron Gilbert. If JPP could contact me , or if anyone could put me in touch with him, I would be grateful. Of course if there is anyone else following up this family I would be only to happy to compare notes. Bruce

Hi all Bill Bayley's book on Kiama Municipality (Blue Haven) mentions Crawley(s) Forest a few times. The most helpful for identification are pages 18, 23 and 54 "Early overland explorers worked south over the eastern end of Saddleback Range, known then as Nunima Range from Jamberoo through Crawler Forest, later Crawley Forest and Mt Pleasant in the valley at Gerringong" "Hoddle's survey work at Kiama followed on his marking out of a road from Bong Bong between where Bowral and Moss Vale later grew. This road ran along the tableland past Wingecarribee Swamp and where Robertson village later grew skirting the mountain precipices to drop down Noorinan and Nunuma Ranges to Crawley Forest and so north-eastward to Kiama harbour. The road was cut through sub-tropical jungle by six men and is marked on Mitchell's Map of Illawarra in 1834 though being only suitable for pack horses, it was little used and soon forgotten." "Meanwhile up the mountain between Mount Pleasant and Saddleback at Crawley Forest a Sunday school was established in 1859. W Dinning was secretary and a small chapel was built there, remaining into the new century". I don't know how familiar Jan and others on the list may be with the area, but there is a turn off from the highway south of Kiama "Mount Pleasant" or "Mt Pleasant". It would have been quite remote in 1857! I noticed a Catherine CRAWLEY married Edward BRYANT on October 11 1835 listed in the Historical Records of the Illawarra Region of NSW, Australia 1770 - 1855 A Chronological Guide to Sources and Events by Michael Organ and A.P. Doyle. It is online at: http://www.michaelorgan.org.au/ilchron3.htm but I suggest getting in touch with the Local Studies library at Wollongong and they may be able to help you locate Crawley's Forest or at least where it used to be. Kind regards, Julia in Bulli
Hello Warren, Thanks for your interest. "My" Elizabeth Gay, was born at Crawleys Forest, near Kiama, 1857 according to her birth registration, and her parents were Matthew Gay, and Margaret unknown, both born Ireland. It seems unlikely we have a connection, but stranger things have turned up in the past. I believe we should just keep the info in the back of our minds. Thank you anyway Jan --------------------------------- Get the World's number 1 free email service. Find out more.
Hi Col Thanks for your interest. The "Crawleys Forest" location appears on the birth registration transcription. Perhaps it is one of those locations that has been swallowed up by progress. Jan --------------------------------- Get the World's number 1 free email service. Find out more.

Was my William Elliott working with George Souter in 1866 on Gray's Omega Retreat? Did the Omega Retreat extend to the Saddleback Mountain?. Your thoughts would be appreciated Regards, Carole (Elliott.) > > >

Hello List I know there are a lot of Peisley researchers on the South Coast, I am particularly interested in Robert Elias Obee Peisley, son of Francis James Peisley. Robert was never along the South Coast, as far as I know, but I feel sure someone here will have him on their tree and may have some info about his birth. I am also looking at the Marshall and Gay families from around Kiama, they are in my husbands family. Alexander Marshall b 1850 Kiama married Elizabeth Gay b 1857 Crawleys Forest (?near Kiama). I am a bit more knowledgable about the Peisleys, my information on the Marshall/Gay families is minimal. Can anyone help? Hi John He is not part of my family, but there was a family named Souter in Nowra in the 1960s, I went to school with their daughter. I'm going to a school reunion next month, and with any luck will see her there. Hi Jan, It is interesting that you have posted about a Marshall family as I have just replied to the post from John Graham about a possible connection with my Allen family and his Marshalls. My Allens have a connection to the Harding family of Toolijooa near Gerringong, and as I understand it were at one stage at Crawley's Forest which is just to the north west of Omega Retreat which John mentioned. I have either a marriage or birth registration (can't remember off the top of my head), which mentions a Mrs Allen of Crawleys Forest area for the early 1850's. I am really interested as to who this Mrs Allen is, as I think she is connected to my Benjamin Allen. I also have a marriage certificate for possibly the same Benjamin Allen which has a witness of either Gay or Guy (difficult to read), which was in 1830 in Kent England. The Hardings came from the Edenbridge area of Kent. Hope we can work something out. On the subject of Souters does anyone recognize the name Nicholas Chadwick Souter? He is one of my "assumed bodily into heaven" folks who vanished without a trace! Born 1851 at Camden then he vanishes. Clare Clare Stapleton
Hi John, I don't have any connection to George Souter, but was wondering whether Margaret Marshall had any connection to the Mary Marshall who married Samuel Allen at Camden in 1832. My Allens were in the Omega Retreat area in the 1880s, when a Mrs Lees was the witness to the birth of one of William Allen and Ann Harding's children. Also looking for information on who that Mrs Lees was. There was a Mrs Janet Gray age 60 free passenger on the Queen of England in 1859 whom I had thought was connected to the Illawarra Grays. Jane Ritchie was on the same ship, and I think they were related. Does anyone know of these two women?
