I believe it was mostly dairy, with some crops to feed the cattle. I live close to Figtree, and have a book called "The Letters of Rachael Henning" who with her husband was an early settler. The book is published by Penguin and if you can find a copy it's worth reading. If you do a search for "Illawarra Historical Society" you can contact people who would have more information. Hello Wayne Yes it is such a long time, I suppose you have been busy burrowing away at research as I have. Yes, Ron and are are well - age is chipping away at our robustness but what can you expect. It is John Darragh who was granted 50 acres at Figtree which he took up in 1835. I am writing book on his life for family reunion next month, and time is fast running out, just to flesh it out would like to know what he was up to until his death in 1858. His son joined him from Ireland in 1841, and I know he was into dairy farming in big way when he settled in Candelo in 1860, his sons also had large dairy herds in the Richmond River district after leaving Candelo in 1900'- so it makes sense that they may have started milking in Figtree. Thank you ever so for your interest and help. Kind regards Joanne

Hi Joanne, Long time since we have been in touch. Trust you and Ron are fine. Dairy farming was the main pursuit regarding farming in the District at that time. However, most small holdings ran just about everything that would sustain the property holders. Many properties were 100 acres, about the size of an 18 hole golf course in "our money"! :) What family names / properties are you looking for Joanne? Hi Best regards, Wayne Carter flora.1@bigpond.com

There is a lot of detailed information about the WALDRON family's land holdings and dealings including information on Alfred in the book Port of Port Kembla 1898 - 1998 by Bill HOOGENDOORN, published 1999. He was the youngest son of Captain Charles and Jemima WALDRON. Also try THE WALDRONS OF ILLAWARRA and their Connections by Rev. O. B. MCCARTHY, published May 1950 in 'The Australian Genealogist', Journal of The Australian Society of Genealogists Jemima and Capt Charles WALDRON are buried in the Pioneer Park Cemetery, Banks and Kembla Streets in Wollongong,an old cemetery with no monuments remaining, only records. The Cemetery was used from 1838 to 1919 and by 1936 had become neglected and overgrown and is now a Rose Garden and is maintained by Wollongong City Council. The Local Studies library at Wollongong Council libarary should have a lot of information about this family. There are many WALDRONS in the Illawarra today. Check the white pages to make contact with the families as there may be one family historian who can help with more information. Regards, Julia Bulli NSW

Hi Reg Waldron is a very well known Wollongong name. Try a google search on Australian pages "Charles Waldron" and pick up the link "Rv McGregor and Maloney" from the Supreme Court listings posted by Macquarie Uni for some interesting information Lorraine ----- Original Message ----- From: "John & Daina" <johndaina@homemail.com.au> To: <aus-nsw-se@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, September 14, 2007 12:43 AM Subject: [NSW-SE] Alfred Adolphus Waldron > Dear Listers, > > > > I am seeking information about Alfred Adolphus Waldron & his wife Lucy > Sarah > Lovett. Interested in the history of your house? Then come along to a presentation at the Merimbula Bowling Club on Tuesday 18 September, 12 noon - 2pm, followed by afternoon tea. All for Free! Lindsay Allen from NSW State Records will discuss how people can use archival records to carry out research on the history of their house. This is a great opportunity to get inspired to find out more about your family house, the house you live in or indeed any other building. Mr Allen will be providing information about research areas that people may not necessarily consider. Specifically, he will talk about primary applications, maps, plans, valuation records, probate and deceased estate files from the State Archives and how these records can be used to find out more about your house. There will also be a pamphlet on local resources that people can use to research the history of their property. Book by phoning Bega Library on 6499 2127. I am looking for information on Thomas Gilbert born Illogan Cornwall about 1806 who migrated to NSW on the "julindur" 1849 with his second wife and three children : John, Emily & Thomas Aron. My wife is descended from Thomas A. and we are able to trace thah line. We hve some information on Emily who married into the Geraghty family. Of John we know nothing. Of Thomas senior's life we know little before he migrated though it seems he was a blacksmith. If anyone has any information to share it would be gratefully received. Bruce
