Hi Fellow Aussies I did a walk through the Boggabri cemetery NSW in October 1998, and wrote down all the headstone inscriptions. So far I have only done the Church of England Portion with intentions of pursuing the rest, hopefully when the weather is cooler. If you are looking for a descendant that you think might be buried in this cemetery, I will be happy to check my data base. Please note that not everyone buried in this section has been listed as there were no headstones on some of the graves even though it was clear that the ground had been disturbed. If you are looking for deceased females and they were married I would suggest you use their married name. I shall post this every now and then for those who missed it. I am quite happy to help any Aussie rooter out there if I can. Regards Carolyn

Vanya, >I shall be driving from Canberra to Sydney on Monday week and would like >to visit Araluen, my grandmother's birthplace in 1864. It is entirely possible to drive from Canberra to Sydney via Araluen, but you will need to allow a full day - not because of the extreme distance, but because of the distractions in the areas you will be travelling through. Take the road east from Canberra (called the Kings Highway, I think), through Queanbeyan, Bungendore, Doughboy and Braidwood. Queanbeyan to Braidwood is 74km. From Braidwood, head south (the highway continues east) towards Jembaicumbene and Reidsdale, then through Bells Creek to Araluen. Braidwood to Araluen is about 30km. From Araluen you can either continue SE for about 60km and pick up the coast at Moruya, or backtrack via Reidsdale and pick up the Kings Highway again near Warrambucca. From here it is about 50km to the coast at Batemans Bay. Batemans Bay to the southern or western suburbs of Sydney is about 4 hours, through some of the nicest country in the world (he says, without any hint of bias <g>). If you have the time, forget the freeway and take the coast road north from Wollongong through Stanwell Park - it's a similiar drive to your own West Coast. It would probably be wise to pick up a good map of the area from Canberra to the coast while you are in Canberra. Have fun. Dear Listers, My ignorance of Australian geography is disgraceful and I apologise to all gentle readers before asking my question: I shall be driving from Canberra to Sydney on Monday week and would like to visit Araluen, my grandmother's birthplace in 1864. I cannot find the town on my maps. As you chortle over my lack of knowledge, please tell me if it is possible to detour to Araluen between Canberra and Sydney, or is it a long way off my route. Many thanks for any help or advice you choose to give. Vanya Rothwell Westland, NZ
Hello, does anyone have information on R.T. THORBURN; c. 1880 onwards; dairy farmer, Built Meroogal (historic house in Nowra), Mining entrpreneuer in the Shoalhaven and Braidwood districts, owned extensive coaching interests on the south coast, and eventually entered publishing in Sydney. George and Jane are my gg-grandparents. With the help of some of the people on this list I have some information on Jane ROUGHLEY's family but I would like to find out more about George MARSHALL (also known as MARSHELL). He apparently met Jane in Araluen or Braidwood some time between 1851-1863, on their children's birth certificates they say they were married in Sydney on 30th April 1863 BUT there is absolutely no record of this marriage!! Why did they go to Sydney to get married?? All Jane's brothers and sisters were married in or near Braidwood and Araluen.... By 1863 George was 33 years old and Jane 23. George's death certificate in 1899 says he was 40 at the time of his marriage and in NSW for 11 years. I would like to know what he did in NSW for those 11 years and what particularly he did in Araluen - was he a gold miner? Would there be records of this? He must have had a bit of money as in 1864 he and Jane are in Victoria and own land in Collins St and then he had ownership of the Brunswick Hotel from 1864-1868. In 1869 he, Jane and there first two children move to Yea Victoria where George buys another Pub. Is there any way I can get any more information on my elusive George and his time in the Braidwood District? Any help would be greatly!!!!! appreciated. Married Elizabeth MORGAN at Braidwood in 1860, and they had several children who were either born or married in the BEGA area. Any information on the above people would be greatly appreciated.
