Hi everyone After ten long days I finally have my computer back from being repaired. I had intended to add a web page of the location of cemetery inscriptions to the mailing list, but given the current interest I will do it sooner rather than later, actually it is already up in a very basic form. As John Graham has mentioned, most cemeteries have already been transcribed by volunteers from genealogical societies who do need to recover their printing costs and hopefully make a little profit to put back into their organsition so that more resources can be purchased. Most are inexpensive given the amount of information they hold. There are also some available online. What we need is a complete listing of the availability of transcripts for all cemeteries, small and large, in South East New South Wales. It would be great if everyone with current details of transcripts - published, unpublished and online could contact me directly (viv@zipworld.com.au) with details. I have just started tonight with a few that I know of (go to the Mail List pages to have a look). I will add more as soon as I get them or find them. Eventually we should be able to identify any that have been missed. Hi All, I am new to the mail group so I hope I am replying in the right manner. Re south coast cemeteries. The Shoalhaven Historical Society and the Shoalhaven Family History Group have a large number of indexes to cemeteries in Shoalhaven. I have transcribed the Presbyterian section of the Nowra General Cemetery and I am willing to undertake a search of this database. Also to check the other indexes for those interested. For Milton Ulludulla Indexes refer to Kathy Dunne Helen Ruttley

Thanks for the tip the aerial photo is great , I wonder why we all move away from where are roots are from. My grandfather George Franklin Smith before he went into the Boer War worked as a contractor with his father William and built the road out to one of the one of the ligthouses and we have his book which shows all of the pay data etc. He might have built the lighthouse I will check. Thank you for your contact. Robert J. Smith was my Great-uncle from Shoalhaven (Tomerong Smiths). I have pictures of him installing telephone lines around Nowra. Is it possible to identify the source of the picture you attached as it had no contrast at all. I do have all the Smiths back to 1600's in Dumfries on a website but until I have removed the living members I have not made the URL public. There are some anomalies still as to why for example John SMITH of Nowra (Violet Bank) was in Tasmania prior to his father, brothers and sisters arriving as an assisted immigrant in 1841 on the "Brothers". It is quite clear though that his wife Jane Eliza SMITH (Smith) was transported to Tasmania after sentencing at the Old Bailey, they married in Tasmania had the first two children and moved to Jambaroo with their father William SMITH. William rented land from Berry at Bolong and they a were flooded out so he moved to Tomerong. He was buried Bolong a long ride in a hearse from Tomerong, unless of course he died in Bolong on a visit. These are the loose ends that seem to be the light side of genealogy. Also some of the children that were adopted into the family were offspring of a member of the family in essence grandchildren. I have not decided how to deal with this as it would make a large number of Aussies an instant generation older. Thanks again, Antony IvanSmith San Luis Obispo CA. Hi everyone, I am following my YANER / JANNER family line and have found: John YANNER (B 1835, Bosco Gurin, Switzerland, D 1913 Mogo, NSW ) Christofore YANNER (B 1837, Bosco Gurin, Switzerland, D 1925 Mogo NSW) >From Christofore's death certificate, he died as a result of a house fire at Mogo and it indicates a inquest was held. Can anyone tell me how to obtain a copy of the inquest documentation from 1925?? Christofore was a miner in the Mogo area and found a 15oz gold nugget (as noted in the Moruya Examiner, 'Mogo of the Past' dated 1956/57). We have also found that Christofore was naturalized in 1912 (still waiting on copy of Certificate) but assume that this was done so he could own land in the Mogo area. I have checked the NSW probate list at the local Darwin Genealogy Society, but can not find him listed. Can anyone suggest my next step in locating probate records. Any information on John / Christofore YANNER would be appreciated. Peter Yanner Darwin. NT PJ_Yanner@Onaustralia.com.au
Niall, >I do think it would be a great idea to have all inscriptions (say, pre 1940 or >1950 or some other arbitrary date) on headstones in South Coast cemetries >available on the web. > >Has this been done in a number of south coast towns already? I think you'll find that most cemeteries have already been transcribed by the local HS or FHG, and in many cases printed transcripts are for sale by these groups. Thus, they are hardly likely to agree to have their work published and available for free on the web, to the detriment of their sales. The alternative of course is for someone to make a fresh transcript, so that copyright is not an issue. However, this raises the obvious question of what is there to gain by duplicating work already done when there are so many other unindexed subjects just begging for someone to get stuck into them. I think if you check the SAG library at Richmond Villa, you will be surprised at the number of different cemetery transcripts already held. In most cases these are small country cemeteries - it is a lot quicker for a local society to record details of a few hundred graves than it is for even a large metro society to record many thousands of entries in some of the large cemeteries. Look how long it took to have the Rookwood fiche prepared - many years. However, as widespread as the coverage by SAG and other societies is, your suggestion will have a lasting benefit if it encourages even one society to record details from a cemetery known not to have already been transcribed. So readers, please check with your local societies and with SAG regarding cemeteries in your area, and if you do identify one which has not been recorded, then let's not leave it until too late.
