Hi All, Before I part with any hard earned cash Does Any one on the list have any knowledge of a flour mill that was possibly in Burwood(a suburb of Sydney). I think it was possibly in Beresford road. I have contacted the records office at the local council chambers and the only information I could get from the very young and enthusiastic clerk that received my call is that I would have to pay there exorbitant fee before they could tell me anything. Any help would be appreciated. Regards I have a list of incomplete lists. Dear List, I have the following people and am wondering if anybody out there is also researching these families. James Robinson b. Scotland marr. Mary Ann Wakeham of Ireland in Sydney, 1835. They settled first in Bulli - he was possibly a coalminer. He died and was buried in Bulli - ca 1878. Mary Ann Robinson went to live in Mogilla - maybe some children went there. One son - James Robinson marr. Mary O'Neil who born at sea. Parents emigrating from Ireland. Married in 1865 and lived in Dapto. He was a miner - maybe at Bulli pit? Does anyone have any information on these people, their ancestors and/or descendants? Best wishes, Matt Corthorn - Moss Vale, NSW mcorthor@acenet.com.au
Judith, >Sooooo if anyone in their research finds any little bits and pieces about my >family I would be very happy to refund any costs involved in getting the >information to me. Don't know if you are in contact with Mrs Eileen Read, "River Cottage", Salisbury Road, Tillegra via Dungog 2420. Eileen is the daughter of Robert Vine Dillon SIDNEY and Nina May FARQUHARSON, who were married at St. Pauls Redfern on November 19th, 1921. The story of their meeting is best told in Eileen's words, from an letter to me some years ago: "My Dad was a Sgt in the 5th Light Horse & was on Gallipoli & at Palestine. When he returned to Aust he came down to Nowra by special train for troops returning home. Mum said it was the thing for everyone to gather on every platform to welcome them home. She recalls seeing this tall (6'2") handsome fellow alight from the train at Kiama & was surounded by girls & was kissed & kissed. She was interested who he could be as he got back in the train & went on to Nowra. She was then nursing at Randwick Military Hospital & was most surprised one day to see this fellow there, he suffered very badly at that time from shell shock. They must have got on OK because they married & were very happy for 54 years till Dad's death. Mum said she told Dad about seing him on the station but he said he didn't know any of the girls - he'd just enjoyed being kissed all the way from Sydney." (A note to expand this: Robert Vine Dillon SIDNEY was born at Nowra on May 24th, 1890, the son of Hugh Ernest Francis SIDNEY and Amelia Frances KNIGHT. He was a grandson of Joseph KNIGHT and Sara VIDLER.) Another bit from the same letter which you will probably find useful in plugging a gap in your family history: "Mum was born at Bombo - her father was the manager of the Blue Metal Quarry there. Their home was on Bombo point - the only house for miles so they didn't get to meet many people." (From the BD&Ms: Nina FARQUHARSON's birth was registered in 1894 at Kiama to Percy G C FARQUAHARSON (sp) and Emma.) One problem that I can't solve is which of the Bombo quarries is THE Bombo Quarry. There is still one active quarry just to the west of the railway line at the foot of the hill - this was known as the Commissioners' Quarry because it was operated on behalf of the Railway Commissioner (and still supplies track ballast). However, there was another "Bombo Quarry" on the point at the northern end of Bombo Beach - the point is almost a hollow shell now, and houses the Kiama sewerage treatment works. It closed as a quarry in 1947. My guess (and that's all it is) is that this would have been the quarry where Percy Farquharson worked. Again, either Ray Thorburn or the Kiama Hist Soc (museum in the Pilot's Cottage on Blowhole Point) would probably be able to straighten this out. There was also a display on the family at the AGEC when it opened in Kiama in the late 1980s. Contact Ray Thorburn, and I am sure he will have quite a bit to show you - enough to make a trip down there worthwhile. I was also in the AWM in early March, and there was a display (family photos and all) based around the deaths of Frank (DOW 15/5/1915) and Walter (KIA 3/5/1917). If you contact them, again I'm sure there will be some useful information for you. Good luck. John > >Thanking the list once again >Judith Lyon >Cronulla. Hi Listers, (All) My research in the FARQUHARSON'S is not progressing very far, I have engaged a person in Scotland to try and find where the father William Tatham FARQUHARSON was born, William had 2 sons, William, who died, and his younger son, Percy Gower Creswell Farquharson who was born in Belize, British Honduras, he had two daughters, both married in Belize, and I have found the family of one, living in USA I have not found the death of William, but think he may have perished when a tidal wave hit Belize in 1883. So what am I doing here. Well Percy Gower Cresswell Farquharson, came to Aust around 1882, he married the daughter of one of his mates in 1884 at St Paul's Sydney, The family was living in Kiama from about 1886 and I was wondering if anyone has information about the family in every day life. There were 11 children in the family and they had sadness with the loss of a infant son in 1897, the loss of an 18year old girl to pneumonia, in 1906, and the loss of 2 sons Walter in 1917 and Frank in 1918 to WW I. At some stage the father Percy lost one eye and one arm, I don't know how this came about? but my mum remembers he use to flap it like a duck and the grandkids use to be frightened of him., Sooooo if anyone in their research finds any little bits and pieces about my family I would be very happy to refund any costs involved in getting the information to me. Thanking the list once again Judith Lyon Cronulla. NSW

Hello everyone We are now over a month old and have 167 subscribers at this moment. But most of you are oh so quiet!!! As we are coming up to Christmas and many of us will be taking a break from work and study, why not think about posting your research interests to the list? If we all have an idea of what families others are researching we could make some good use of any spare time we have over the Christmas New Year break. Also food for thought for the coming year. Would especially like to hear from those subscribers who have not yet posted to the list. Web Pages Pages for the list are being updated as soon as information is received. The cemeteries page has grown during the last week, please let me know of the location and availability of any transcripts not listed. The subscribers page gives links to our subscribers own pages. If your pages aren't listed and you would them to be, please contact me. The societies page is a listing for all genealogical and historical societies within South East New South Wales. If you are a member of an organisation that is not listed please ask your group to send me their details. For organisations with their own web pages I will include a description and a link. For those without pages I can give more details, or if they like I am willing to maintain a page for them as I already do for IFHG and IHS. I have plenty of space left with Zip and 10 MG with Apana that has not yet been utilised. If your group doesn't have a web presence and would like, please contact me for further details. There would be no cost involved although you would need to supply the copy for the page in electronic format, eg just a text file would suffice. Please send your suggestions and comments to me, or if it something that you think the list may like to discuss, post it to the list. And lastly, I am still in need of a map showing the geographical coverage of the list. There must be some creative person out there who can do this!! Looking forward to hearing from you all Viv -- Vivienne Caldwell viv@zipworld.com.au vc04@uow.edu.au viv@wollongong.apana.org.au Wollongong NSW http://www.zip.com.au/~viv

I did contact Ken direct but I notice in his thank you, he has purchased the book "Camden". Is this Alan Atkinson's book? This is a brilliant local history study using many court records as references. However, be aware that the index is incomplete. There are some 300 people mentioned in the text that are not in the index. As a member of the Society of Indexers, I found that publishers often only allow a certain number of pages for an index and if the index is being done by a professional indexer other than the author, they just reduce the index to fit the allotted pages. They would not be aware of how vitally important it is to family and local historians to have a complete index. All researchers should be aware of this as it happens regularly. That is why when I am putting a book like this into my specialist index of the Picton/Camden/ Campbelltown area, I completely redo the index. I believe this is worse than a book having no index as one can miss something vital. At least if there is no index one can read the whole book and find it. Off my soap box. Good morning everyone, Is there anyone on the list who would have access to Bernard Brown's Diary. While visiting the Shoalhaven Historical Society at Pyree recently I located a reference to my ggg grandfather John McDermott in the Brown's Diary index. Apparently the Brown Diary is on microfilm but unfortunately the reader at the Society is broken so I didn't get to look at the microfilm. If anyone has access to this microfilm and would be prepared to look up the reference to J. McDermott (there is only one) I would be most grateful. Hello all, I have just read a copy of "Special Places in the Southern NSW Forests Community Heritage Workshops - Report on the Nowra Workshop". The Nowra workshop was, apparently, held on 12th October with ten community representatives in attendance - no local Historical Societies sent representatives. The workshops are part of the assessment process which will culminate in the Regional Forsests Agreements i.e. where logging will ocurr. The Nowra list of Heritage Places is, unfortunately, notably only for the number of Heritage places that it omits ! Anyone who knows of a heritage site that may be affected by future logging operations should take a look at the report to ensure its inclusion; additions/corrections must be received by the 21st December. The report should be available in your local library. There is a collection at the University of Wollongong that contain information of particular relevance to the region covered by this list. These are the notebooks of Francis McCaffrey, who published two books assumed to be derived from these notebooks, one of which is mainly concerned with cattle breeding and another which is entitled "The History of Illawarra and its Pioneers". The way in which information has been randomly entered in the notebooks make the finding an item on a specific topic virtually impossible. There is no chronological or thematic order to page upon page of small but neat handwriting. However, one does get the impression that McCaffrey has most probably carried a notebook with him regularly and entered the information soon after it had been acquired. I have been typing up one of the notebooks and will post a series of excerpts to the list which may be of interest to some subscribers. Words followed by a question mark indicate that I couldn't understand the writing, if you recognise any of these words (usually place names), please let me know! Eventually it is hoped they will be typed up and indexed. There are quite a few notebooks - if anyone does want to look at them at the Uni be prepared for some long sessions. Also it would be necessary to contact the archivist, Michael Organ first. Viv Vivienne Caldwell http://www.zip.com.au/~viv
