A search on Amazon.com shows the following out-of-print title: "Kiama through the years : the development of Kiama and district, its buildings, people and way of life from David Smith's arrival in 1821 to the present day" by Douglas McLeod Johnston This is a new one to me - does anyone know anything about this book, or the author? The book is not listed in the SLNSW catalogue, and although there is a Douglas M Johnston listed in the authors index, his books are to do with environment and maritime issues, so he may not be the right one. Extract from the "Kiama Independent" of May 28th, 1901 On Friday afternoon Mrs. William Weir, of Crooked River, and her daughter Maggie were driving to Foxground when their horse took fright and bolted, precipitating both from the vehicle near the bridge. Mrs. Weir had both ankles dislocated, and the daughter is suffering greatly from shock, but was not seriously injured. The below is a must for us to check after so many trips to Sydney to go the State & Mitchell Libraries for research - I though i had check & seen everything but Here at home using the database I found a painting of Ulladulla 1857 of William Sturrock who was the postal master til the 1880s at time of print 1857 he was working at Wardens Store. Yes I will be ordering a copy of this for my collection Cathy Dunn From: "Alan Ventress" <aventres@ilanet.slnsw.gov.au> I am pleased to announce that PICMAN, the Mitchell Library's database of its pictures and manuscript collections, is now available on the Internet at http://www.slnsw.gov.au/picman/picman.htm. PICMAN contains catalogue records of material in the pictures and manuscripts collections of the Mitchell Library, Dixson Library and Dixson Galleries which have been catalogued since 1992. It includes records of personal papers and private archives, paintings, drawings, photographs, objects, posters, architectural plans as well as six digitised photographic collections. PICMAN contains about 97000 records. 2300 of these are manuscript records, 7100 are pictures records and about 88000 are individual records for the digital images. The digitised photographic collections range from the 1870s to the 1980's. They have been drawn from six separate collections - such as the 1870s Holtermann collection of regional NSW and Sydney, the Australasian Antarctic Expedition collection of 1911-1914, the 1930-50s commercial work of the Sam Hood studio and the 1960s, '70s and '80s work of the Australian Photographic Agency (APA). Because of copyright law, some the APA images cannot be delivered over the Internet, and so must be viewed at the Library. We hope to add a further 200000 images in the new year, when the old Government Printing Office video discs are loaded onto PICMAN. Digitised images of other parts of the collections, such as significant purchases or acquisitions, will be added from time to time. PICMAN takes over from the familiar card catalogues, but does not replace or duplicate them. While compared to the card catalogues PICMAN has only been operational for a comparatively brief period, it already provides access to important material and should be consulted as well when searching the Library's collections. Hello, I am new to this list but am a member of SCOTSGEN, LANCSGEN, and LANARK mailing lists. I also run a McTAGGART-s list myself. I wonder if I could ask some kind soul for a lookup? I have run into a dead end searching for my grandmother: Agnes McTAGGART b:Feb 23, 1889. Her father was John McTAGGART, a marine fireman who was deceased at the time of her marriage in 1911 I have searched England, Scotland, and Ireland for a birth record to no avail. I understand that some McTAGGARTs made their way to Australia in the 1800's and hope that Agnes may have been born there. I would be extremely grateful for any help or suggestions anyone may have. Can some help on the following Ta Cathy Dunn Adolphus Summercloud STEWART born about the turn of this century. He was known as George Stewart, and his family say the Summercloud is a "red Indian" background. I have not as yet found his arrival in Australia or his birth, in NSW. I wondered if Summercloud is named after a ship rather than native American. Some one tells me there was a Summercloud wreck near Nowra, so wonder what year and what type of ship that would be. Hello all, Here's an idea related to the last posting about Headstone inscriptions. Why doesn't everyone get something like that happenning in their own towns, from Helensburgh to Moruya which is the subject/scope of this list? As I live in Cronulla, this would exclude me, but I do think it would be a great idea to have all inscriptions (say, pre 1940 or 1950 or some other arbitrary date) on headstones in South Coast cemetries available on the web. It might provide valuable information for genealogists, in addition to other available death records. Has this been done in a number of south coast towns already? Best Wishes to You and Yours for the Peaceful and Beautiful Christmas! I am currently undertaking research that concerns a Christopher VINCENT, known to be at Sutton Forest, NSW, in the late 1830s. Any connections or references to any of the names or places mentioned below, would be greatly appreciated. Information concerning Christopher VINCENT held by the Greater London Record Office was obtained via the Thomas Coram Foundation for Children, London, now built on the site of the Foundling Hospital. It reveals that Christopher VINCENT was born on 6 January 1814 to Martha LEWIS, aged 21 years. She came from the town of Montgomery, Wales and her parents are described as "poor but honest" . Martha Lewis moved to London to live with a woman she had known as a child in Wales, a Mrs. WATKINS of Swallow Street. She obtained domestic work with Mrs. MARSH, 6 Polygon, Somers Town, now the London Borough of Camden where she re-established a relationship with John PRICE, a stonemason. Price had also moved to London from Montgomery, to live at Little Brook Street. When Martha Lewis became pregnant to Price, Mrs Marsh arranged for her to stay with an elderly woman friend. Martha Lewis last saw John Price on 20 September 1813, after which time he is thought to have "gone to sea". As a single woman unable to support her child, Martha Lewis applied to the governors of the Foundling Hospital for her son to be admitted. Upon his admission, the child was given the name Christopher Vincent. He was fostered to Frances EAGLE at Addlestone, Surrey where he remained until age five years. He then returned to the Foundling Hospital in Guildford Street, and stayed until he was apprenticed on 26 March 1829. The Apprentice Register notes that he was apprenticed to " Joseph GURNEY of 56 St. James Street in the parish of St George Hanover Square, in the County of Middlesex, Tailor, to be instructed in household business". Christopher Vincent's apprenticeship was shortlived. The Old Bailey Session Papers (FM4 5846, 15 April 1830 p.329) show that barely twelve months later, at the age of 16 years, he was indicted on 11 April, 1830 for stealing one book value 1/- and one neck stock, the goods of James Thomas SPICE, to which he pleaded "guilty". The circumstances surrounding the charges are not known, however, for his crime, he was sentenced to transportation to the Colony of New South Wales for seven years. Following his conviction he was held in the London Gaol Delivery. Then on 4 September, 1830, he was confined on board the ship York, at Sheerness, at the mouth of the River Thames. The York (1) was 429 tons, built at Southwick in 1819. There were 199 male prisoners and 40 guards of the 17th Regiment on board under Captain Daniel Leary and Surgeon Campbell France. The voyage from London took 156 days, sailing via Teneriffe in the Canary Islands (Bateson 1959:301). The "York" arrived in the Colony of New South Wales on 7 February 1831. In the Convict Indents Christopher Vincent is described as aged 17 years, 4 feet 8 inches in height, black hair, hazel eyes and with a sallowed freckled complexion. The register notes he was from London, that he could read and write, and his occupation was a tailor, for one and a half years. Upon arrival in the Colony of New South Wales, Christopher Vincent was assigned to Harry MARR of Sydney. By 1837, Christopher Vincent, who was then aged 23 years, had been granted his Ticket of Leave, and was a resident of the district of Sutton Forest (NSW General Return of Convicts for 1837 - No. 26218 Ticket of Leave. p.147). *********************************************************************** Jennifer Lambert Tracey Historical Archaeologist Cultural Heritage Research Centre UNIVERSITY OF CANBERRA, AUSTRALIA Tel. / Fax (02) 6295 6795 Mobile Tel. 0419 011 860 e-mail: jtracey@ozemail.com.au http://www.ozemail.com.au/~jtracey/ ***********************************************************************
