Terry's Meadows >From Arthur Cousins, The Garden of New South Wales, Illawarra Historical Society edn, 1994 [1948], p. 44. "Samuel Terry received his 2000 acre grant on 9th January, 1821. It was on the south side of the Macquarie Rivulet, and was known as Terry's Meadows. To this he added Andrew Allen's 700 acres. Terry had large properties outside of Illawarra, and had grazing rights on the Shoalhaven. Next to Terry's grant, to the west, was John Paul's estate of 1400 acres, 600 acres of which were promised in 1823, and 800 acres in 1824. This property included Tulimbah and Tongarra. Still further west was a grant of 1200 acres promised to John Terry Hughes on 26th June, 1826, the deed being issued to Rosetta Terry on 12th November, 1857. Terry's Meadows was managed by an overseer and stockman, whose huts became a finder post for travellers passing through the Illawarra. They were specially referred to my Major Mitchell in describing the course of the road planned by him in 1834, the road going past these huts. Although not one of the original grantees, Samuel Terry was one of the first to have cattle in Illawarra, and he was one of the six, who in September, 1817, offered a reward of 20 pounds for the conviction of cattle thieves. When he died in 1838, his nephew, John Terry Hughes, succeeded to Terry's Meadows, whose name was changed to Albion Park." Does anyone have access to the Nowra Cemetery? I am after information on John Worstein Johnson and Ann Goodlet Johnson. They were both buried in the Methodist Section 5A 13 and 14. Ann's date is stated as 14/6/1932. John's is 28/5/1955. The problem is we have been told they are husband and wife but the problem is he died in 1899 but they have a different date than his death Certificate and Newspaper clippings. Is it possible that they put 28/5/1955 because they may have put a headstone on at a later date or is their two John Worstein Johnons' buried in the same plot? This little problem has me baffled at the moment! Can anyone help?? Thank you Regards Nancy Middleton :-)

Good Morning, We are interested in any information on the early settlers in Bowral - in particular, the purchasers of the original Oxley subdivision of lots in Bowral in 1863. The names and the initial history which we need to improve is at http://www.hinet.net.au/~jblstat/L160.html and at http://www.hinet.net.au/~jblstat/L150.html . Any assistance appreciated. If there are any old photos, particularly of original settlers and more importantly, the original 'Camden families' then we will make arrangements for reproduction professionally. **************************************************************************** Barrie & Wendy LOITERTON , Wildes Meadow, in the Southern Highlands near Sydney, Australia Researching LOITERTON in Australia from 1853 and prior in Lincolnshire, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire in England. In reply to Jennifer My uncle Mr Miller before he died gave me a copy of a book called "Adelong Glimpses at the Past" by Rosalyn J Bird (published 1976) in which there is in chapter 2 a good description of the Gold Fever that hit Adelong when a gold bearing reef was discovered in 1857. It goes on to state that by 1876 "Adelong was placed 3rd on the list of gold amounts received at the Mint. Hill End 17,299 ounces 68,042 pounds Parkes 17,342 ounces 66,120 pounds Adelong 16,432 ounces 62,580 pounds" The booklet also describes the mines and the machine used, .Don't know if this is of interests to others as I'm not sure if it is available any longer, I thought I would send this message just in case others have an interest in the Adelong area. Are you sure you don't mean Fairy Meadow. My gggrandfather, a farmer from Ireland John Barker settled their in 1850's +/- his daughter Eliza married William Smith of Bolong/Tomerong, a contractor who built the Jervis Bay Lighthouse. I believe William and his father William were at Jambaroo before moving to Bolong. Hello Max Thanks for promt reply. Yes, please use the information to expand data base. I am member of Berrima Historical Soc.. However due to work comitments have not used their archives as much as I would have liked. Have some interesting articles from their file of newspapers. Recently contacted descendent of Esther Wright, Ray Sullivan, who provided me with some wonderful history of this family via the 'Mann Family History' which had been researched previously. The English history on Samuel Wright & Elizabeth Smith was wonderful to receive from Ray. He has traced it back to the mid 1700's and has been to Leichestershire to research this family Regards Margaret Childs.
I have recently lost a whole file from my e-mail containing all the mail I was to respond to. Anyone awaiting a response please e-mail me again at kathie@powerup.com.au Regards Kathie

In your posting, you mentioned NE Vic. and I wondered what areas you meant. I am particularly interested in the Ovens River/Wandiligong/Bright area re goldmining. Quite a few of my ancestors were miners there - you mention lease documents etc??? Would be interested in finding out more about this. REPLY: Hello Elizabeth - and others interested in their mining ancestors! Best Wishes for a wonderful year ahead! Now to these north-eastern Victorian goldfields! I have considerable information about the Ovens Goldfield and the early pastoral development in that area. I would be pleased to assist you in any way I can. Do you have a copy of Carole Woods [1985] definitive history "Beechworth A Titan's Field"? If not, I have a copy of that publication and several others that are relevant. We could start by looking at any references to your mining ancestors, or the areas in which they may have worked ... then take it from there. Most of the official records for Victoria are held in Melbourne at the Public Record Office, however, the local historical society in Beechworth have been very helpful to me over past years. Depends on what you can find out, before approaching, or having to go to Melbourne! If I can help let me know. In reply to Dennis Strangman and to others with an interest in goldfields ... Thank you, I do have the Historic Kiandra book. Many of those diggers disillusioned with their finds on the Victorian goldfields took off for Kiandra, in south western New South Wales, over extremely rugged mountain country, to reach the new 'Kiandra' rush. Out of necessity, a surveyor named Ligar devised a route via the Upper Murray and Happy Jack into Kiandra. The track was named Ligar's Route. In the Alpine Pioneer 27 November 1860 advertisements were run by the Australasian Steam Navigation Company for passages from Sydney to Eden (Twofold Bay) twice weekly for a fare with provisions was 35/-. Merimbula was also a port of call for miners arriving by sea on "SS The Hunter" and houses of accommodation were advertised "en route to the [Kiandra]diggings". I am currently completing a paper on the mining operations on New Chum Hill which examines methods of mining used on the on the Kiandra Goldfield, particularly those used on the Kiandra Deep Lead, New Chum Hill, during the period 1860 - 1883. These included various applications of tunnelling and finally hydraulic sluicing. Further, it investigates a stamper battery, officially reported to be 'forty-head', erected to crush the auriferous conglomerate alluvium extracted from the Great Emperor Tunnel. Reports of this battery's operation are scarce and anomalies in the description of the battery exist in the historical record. The extent of the hydraulic sluicing claims has eradicated much of the archaeological evidence of the earlier workings and the battery site. The battery operated for only four years before being sold to the Perseverance Gold Mining Company. It was transported by bullock teams over the mountains to the Adelong Goldfield [near Tumut, NSW] where it was re-erected on the banks of Adelong Creek. There it was used to crush auriferous quartz from the reef mines on Victoria Hill. If there is anyone on the list with an interest in mining in southern NSW, north eastern Victoria, or the mining fields of North Queensland, I would appreciate discussion with you. Best Wishes for 1999!
