    1. Re: Australian Vital Records Index
    2. Charles J. Green
    3. Morning all, As you may know, the LDS Church recently released a set of four CDs titled the Australia Vital Records Index. This set is not available for sale to individuals within Australia due to contractual arrangements (we don't step on their toes, they don't step on ours). I, like many of you, expected that the CDs would have been pretty much complete as per the dates given. However, I received a letter from someone today disspelling this myth of mine. [Names have been removed to protect the innocent] -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Be aware that there are possibly many hundreds of records missing from this CD (Australian Vital Records Index). I have a cousin in the US and she happened to purchase a set for me for my birthday. There are very few records for my family before 1792 (I have 4 first Fleeters) and yet I have viewed the records on microfiche and have record numbers for the entries. There are also records missing up to about 1850 and these records have already been copied by the LDS on microfilm from the Old Parish Records. I have even brought up the index list of various names to check that these were actually missing and not just miss-spelt. I have most of my records and I wanted to use these records to sort out family groups so it was very disappointing. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- I thought that perhaps some of you would be interested in the experience of someone who has actually used the AVRI. 3. Yes, it is me with more soldiers again! Brothers Herbert John (24 years) and Thomas Austin CLEGG (21 years) enlisted at Goulburn in January 1915 although they had close ties to the Illawarra. Herbert John CLEGG is listed on the Thirroul and Bellambi memorials. Thomas Austin CLEGG was killed in action at Lone Pine and is listed on Corrimal Church of England and Corrimal Public School memorials. Thomas was born at Lochinvar. Their sister, Lucy was married to a CRAM, probably before the boys enlisted. She was living at Goulburn then, but was back in Wollongong by the 1920s. In information on the CLEGGs would be great, especially any descendants Herbert CLEGG or Lucy CRAM. 1. RE: FIVE ISLANDS ESTATE
    2. Jennifer Lambert Tracey
    3. Hello Jan and to the List. Regarding Five Islands Estate, I have some information coupled with a request for your assistance. Firstly, in a unpublished manuscript I am researching for my PhD, there is a reference to Henry Wyse and his brother. Henry states that when aged 14 years, he was living with his 'eldest' brother [John] at Five Islands. This would have been c. 1835. I have had difficulty in establishing why these WISE / WYSE brothers were at Five Islands. There is little doubt in my mind that they were stockmen / overseers, and I also realise that Five Islands was the name used for the general area. James Wise [another brother] had earlier associations with Charles Throsby. However, the year 1835 could be very significant. It was in that year that William WISE [another brother], overlanded the first stock to the Murray River and took up the first pastoral run on the Murray River, "Mungabareena", for Charles Hotson Ebden. As you go through your research notes and sources, would you please keep a lookout for any references to the name WISE / WYSE. Many thanks, Jennifer *********************************************************************** Jennifer Lambert Tracey BA (ANU); M App Sc (UC); Historical Archaeologist Cultural Heritage Research Centre UNIVERSITY OF CANBERRA, AUSTRALIA Tel. / Fax (02) 6295 6795 Mobile Tel. 0419 011 860 e-mail: jtracey@ozemail.com.au http://www.ozemail.com.au/~jtracey/ *********************************************************************** -----Original Message----- From: WILLIAM & JAN McELROY [mailto:JAN_BILL_McELROY@bigpond.com] Sent: Sunday, 17 January 1999 6:08 To: AUS-NSW-SE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: FIVE ISLANDS ESTATE Hi All, Information sought on the Five Island Estate (Port Kembla) - historical background, William Wentworth, leaseholders, convicts etc. Thanks, Jan McElroy ==== AUS-NSW-SE Mailing List ==== Don't forget to check the AUS-NSW-SE web pages for new updates http://www.zip.com.au/~viv/aus-nsw-se.htm
