Susan, >I am researching my great grandfather James Mundy Newnham who I am told was >the manager of the Gerringong Butter Factory around 1850. His daughter Mary S >Newnham was born at Gerringong 1884 & the birth was registered as being at >Kiama. I have also been told that the butter factory was closed due to >fermentation, do you know what that means? The first milk/butter factory to open in the Gerringong area was the Broughton Village milk creamery, in 1872. It went broke in 1874. Another factory, at Mt. Pleasant, opened in June 1878. It was operated by the Kiama & Gerringong Milk Condensing Company, and was closed "due to fermentation" in 1883. (from "A Tribute To Loyalty" by Ian Godfrey, available from the Gerringong HS.) According to "Blue Haven" by W A Bayley (1959), "directors Dr Harman Tarrant, W. Clarke, B. James jnr (all of Sydney), and W. Hindmarsh and J. Black of Kiama were appointed. The machinery was ordered from Mort and Co. at a cost of 500 pounds. The factory was built at Omega where Barry as manager and Martin his assistant made opening preparations." (p95) However, there is better luck for you in the Jamberoo area. From p22 of the same book: "On the estate of John Ritchie a flour and timber mill was erected in 1838. Operated by a water wheel in the Minnamurra River, the mill was built by Captain J. G. Collins.....he named it the Woodstock mill and the surroundings became known as the village of Woodstock. In 1844 Henry Heathorne took over the management....After Heathorne left for Bathurst, Newnham, who was linked with Tooths in the Kent Brewery at Sydney, managed for some years." There is an excellent drawing of this mill and surrounds facing p22. An even better drawing of the mill itself can be found on p95 of "The Garden of New South Wales" by Arthur Cousins (1948). The originals of both drawings are in the ML (done by Capt. Westmacott). Cousins also states (p96) in relation to the Woodstock mill, that "Mr Heathorn...was succeeded in the late forties by the brothers Newnham, related to Tooths of Kent Brewery, Sydney." I think this opens up plenty of scope for further research into your g-gf. Hi List, I have a flyer saying there is to be a Reunion of descendants of John & Margaret HENRY at Kiama in July 2003. I have tried unsuccessfully to contact the organiser Brian Henry to see if it is still going ahead. Does anyone on the list know? I am hoping for a needle in the haystack find. To help me in my research of the emigrant ship Tantivy, I am asking whether anyone has an old diary or letter or any other material from long-gone relatives pertaining to any of the three voyages Tantivy made to Australia with immigrants -- anything that gives any insights into the voyages, especially the 1854 to Sydney. My g-grandparents, John and Selina Waters, came to Australia in her and settled in the Gunning District. Any help will be greatly appreciated. John Waters Melbourne
A photo has recently come to light of Solomon Pierce. It is with a collection of Harvey family photos and indicates that Solomon worked for the Harveys. The other photos were taken around 1871. I am interested to find out just who Solomon was and to give a copy of the photo to any descendents. The only Solomon I have found so far in the records is Solomon Pearce who arrived with his family in 1855 of the "Rajasthan". This Solomon appears to have married - registered Ulladulla - in 1866. The Harvey family were at Gerringong and Milton area. Wendy

To all the wonderful people who helped with my inquirey re.Wingercarribee, I thank you all Eileen
Eileen and Dick I checked out both "Exeter" and "Wingecarribee" using the names search on this site: http://www.gnb.nsw.gov.au/ There were 6 references for both but alas no "Wingecarribee" town. You may want to look closer at the old parish maps at the Land and Property site http://www.lpi.nsw.gov.au/maps/pmap/search/pmap_websearch.display. I have found some amazing stuff on these maps - such as the location of properties owned by family. A reference to someone being from or born in Wingecarribee may be a reference only to the district. Lots of my early family were said to have be born in Maneroo, which is an early name for the Monaro, digging a little deeper I've found that they were actually born at Bombala or on properties nearby. Good luck with your hunting Judy Egan -----Original Message----- From: Dick Monks [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, 28 January, 2003 11:13 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: wingercarribee Dear Eileen, I am currently researching the early days of the Southern Highlands, and have not come across a village called Wingercaribee. Hi Eileen Try http://www.wsc.nsw.gov.au/council/ Some extracts: This area is known to tourists as the Southern Highlands of New South Wales. This Shire is an important catchment area for water supply to Sydney, Wollongong and the Northern Shoalhaven. Much of the Shire located at or above 640 metres above sea level.. The main towns are Bowral [10,402], Moss Vale [6,623], Mittagong [7,432 - which includes Welby, Willow Vale, Braemar and Balaclava] and Bundanoon [1950] BASED ON 2001 CENSUS FIGURES ] As well there are smaller villages like Hill Top [1607], Yerrinbool [973], Colo Vale [1180], Robertson [1023], Berrima [320], New Berrima [559], Exeter [359], Burrawang [191], Penrose, Wingello [295], Sutton Forest, Avoca, Fitzroy Falls and Balmoral Village. The total urban population at 2001 was 33,071, with the rural population 7,769. The pattern of development is one of small towns and villages, separated by a semi rural landscape and from a Planning perspective, Council intends to retain this character for the Shire. Hi Looking for information on LARKHAM family of Crookwell NSW. Mostly after 1900. Has anyone come accross this family. apparently they were pioneers in the district. Derek
Hi Coralie, A death certificate should give you the information you are looking for. Do you have that? If cost is an issue, suggest you use a transcriber, who is able to check specific details at a reduced rate. Contact me personally if you would like more info. Joy
