Hello, Does anyone know if there are any certificate transcibers in Queensland? Thanks Joy
Dear Listers, As if I haven't got enough to do with my time I have decided to try and gather names of people who were buried by my gggrandfather and his sons, and grandsons, mentioned above. The firm started abt 1850 at South Head Rd, then Oxford Street and also Newtown, and continued in the family until 1975. It is still an operating company but is now owned by an American firm of undertakers. Some years ago I attempted to find some records for the firm but were told that they had all been taken to the tip when new management took over. If you have anyone buried by my family I would love to hear from you and hopefully I can build up a database which would be available to all. Some burials would have been performed by my Dad's grndfather Henry and also by his gtuncle William who died in 1900. Please contact me if you can help, either by sending photocopies to me, by scanning or by emailing me data. I am quite happy to reimburse any costs involved. Many thanks in advance Sandra Armstrong in Maryborough Qld ( nee Dixon) ps My apologies for the cross postings
sorry I can't help with Dawsons but some of the Watt/Bryce clan might be able to. It might also be useful, though, to keep an eye out for 'Killarney' - that was the old name for the Erowal Bay area, still called that in the 1950s. regards Leith Davis -----Original Message----- From: Joan Edwards [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Wednesday, 27 August 2003 1:19 PM To: [email protected] Subject: DAWSON at Erowal Dear Listers, I have copies of applications to purchase 3 lots of land on the NW side of St George's Basin by John Dawson in the late 1830s. One was already spoken for. He bought at least 1 of the other 2 because on a daughter's marriage certificate in 1847, she and her brother and sister as witnesses gave their address as Erowal. Does anyone have any information about this family? John's wife Mary died but the death is not registered. The date 1846 has been mentioned and I am assuming at this stage that the person has seen a headstone or maybe a church register. Can anyone shed any light on this - is there an old cemetery in the Erowal area? Hi List, I am hoping that somebody may be able to help me. I am interested in information on John Wearin, John was living in the Dapto area from about 1835 onwards, he was married to Harriet Wintle, three of his children Elizabeth 1837, John Jnr 1839 and William 1843 were born in Dapto and baptised at St Lukes. John was a colour sergeant in the 80th regiment in 1839, and was assistant to the superintendant of police in 1843, any help on any of the above would be greatly appreciated. TIA, Anne Clark in Sydney.
Hi Cathy, It appears I have other new found cousins. I will contact them and give them more details of George's parents and the circumstances of their coming to Australia. Our researchers in UK have more details now but are concentrating on the other branches of our families at present. They are the ones with less "colourful" characters perhaps. Any one else interested in the Fowler and Pender families of Ulladulla and Milton and Bega is also welcome to share in whatever research we come up with. Simply contact me (or Cathy) and I will forward it privately or we can place it on the net if it is not too detailed or boring for the others. George was the blacksmith for Milton and moved there from the original settlement at Dapto where they had the blacksmith's shop on the highway. They came to Milton via the Kangaroo Valley area. George's daughter Elizabeth Fowler was my mother's grandmother. Mother still tells stories about her and the family. George's wife was Maria Eggleton daughter of Sophia Eggleton and William Eggleton first Constable at Campbelltown. The pioneer history there commemorates them. William was born in the colony to First Fleet parents who were married in the second lot of marriages performed in the colony. The first marriages were five couples married on 10 February 1788 and the Eggletons were married on 17 February 1788. They were the seventh couple married in Australia. Sophia Eggleton nee Ruggless (Her father was 3rd Fleet) is buried at Milton C of E Cemetery along with a number of Fowlers and Penders. Her mother was Mary Armstrong. Mary was transported with her friend for the crime of taking a shawl to the value of approximately three pence three farthings. A third girl also of seventeen was acquitted. The three shawls were estimated at a value of ten pence. George Fowler came free with his mother and family on the Barrell 2. His mother was quite a woman. I have the ships surgeon's reports of the trip now describing her as frail and of nervous disposition but her deeds belie the description. She was a strong and dedicated mother and wife. Her family owes a lot to her dedication and endurance. She was a true pioneer. Because of her there are many Fowlers and their relatives and descendents in Australia. The true story is very interesting. But that's for another time. If I disable the Firewall I use, then I overcome the problem you mention of accessing/searching some sites. (EZ Firewall warns that it may not "interact" with certain sites, and obviously it is true of other products too) Regards Deb Perth WA

Kerrie I have been having the same problem. Not sure if this is because of the virus scanning that we all have in place and the firewalls. It is annoying isnt it Kaye www.bananatv.com/genealogy ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kerrie" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, August 23, 2003 4:54 PM

Hi Joan I had a few twigs on our JONES branches in the area during this time. There was a major flood and many families left the area - some of mine came back to Parramatta the others went further north to the Taree area. There was a cedar/gold boom up the Araluen and the town of Nelligen (just west of Batemans Bay) was in a boom then the flood came in the late 60's - 1868 from memory. The three lines I have been looking at all left in 1869 or 1870. I had wondered why so I stopped in at Nelligen next time I was in the area - and the local sign tells of this flood which wiped out a large part of the town.
