Is there any record I could search, eg PO Directories etc to find out Donald's occupation or any thing else about the family? I found a marriage of a Donald Frederick McIntosh to Elizabeth G HENRY in Sydney in 1910. Then looked up births and found an Elizabeth E G Henry born to William and Sarah A reg at Kiama in 1891. Looking for the wife Gertrude or Elizabeth's death "when her children were young". Hi Listers. Does anyone have any information on John William Lynch and Margaret Ryan who married in Young in 1877 and had John William (1881), Catherine (1882) and Neil J (1884) - all born in Young. I am in interested in Margaret's parents William and Catherine Ryan. Regards Paul Robinson
MargM As Kevin and Christene have mentioned Keira Street is named after the mountain that stands as the backdrop to Wollongong. When Major Mitchell surveyed and laid out the township of Wollongong he had four streets running north to south and three east to west. Three of the streets in the N - S direction were named for the mountains in the vicinity that made up the Illawarra Range. The nearest to the mountains was Keirs Street then came Kembla Street and then Corrimal Street, the fourth was named harbour Street for the obvious reason. The three streets in the E - W aspect were named Crown (the main street), Market and Smith. The first two are again obvious choices and the third named for Throsby Smith who was the pioneer of Wollongong and the land that was used for Smith Street was owned by him as part of his farm. Hope this helps Neville Bellambi NSW MargM wrote: > > Dear Listers > > Can SKS tell me how Wollongongs Keira Street got > its name ? > > Many thanks > > Bye > > MargM > Beautiful Central Coast of NSW > > ============================== > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237
Hi Keeiraville Mt Keira and Keira Street all have the same origin KEIRAVILLE Mr Frank Osborne can be reached thru the local history centre ....his folks held origional land grants and he is a wealth of info on history of the Gong Christene in the Gong Parish of Wollongong County of Camden Keiraville is on part of the 2000 acre grant originally promised to James Stares Spearing by Governor Brisbane in 1825. It was known as Paulsgrove. In 1835 the property was sold to Colonel John Thomas Leahy who changed the name to Mount Keira Estate. The grant was finally issued in 1841 to Robert and Charles Campbell. Keiraville seems to have been founded as a village about 1880. The Illawarra Mercury of 15 June 1886 refers to Keiraville as "one of the new localities that have sprung into existence of late years". The names "Village of Keira" and "Keira Village" also seem to have been used. A notice from the Land Titles Office dated 17 June 1890 refers to it as the "Village of Keira". Keira is an aboriginal name for which three meanings have been given: large lagoon; high mountain; wild turkey. ----- Original Message ----- From: "MargM" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, October 29, 2003 10:54 PM Subject: Keira St ? > Dear Listers > > Can SKS tell me how Wollongongs Keira Street got > its name ? > > Many thanks > > Bye > > > MargM > Beautiful Central Coast of NSW > > > > ============================== > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 >

Hi Listers, Adelaide (Addie) married William Jones but I don't know where or when as she came from South Australia. There were two or three children, Patricia, Ronald (?) and perhaps one other. Addie Jones (first marriage Montgomerie, nee Tynan) died in Nowra in 1972. Her mother Mary Ellen (Nell) Tynan (nee Scown) married Oscar Joseph Walford in Sydney in 1943 and also died in Nowra. It's just a long shot, but did any of you know these people? Maybe you lived next door. I am writing a family history and would really like to find out about Addie and her family. Can someone tell me please, if I can get transcripts from the cemetery as this might clear up the number and names of her children. Maybe her children still live there. Fingers crossed! Rhoda, this is a long-shot -- but have you thought to send an e-mail to the Mitchell Library, within the State Library of NSW, here in Sydney? I should be very surprised if he did not feature in perhaps a few items in their INDEX CARDS. Of course I do not know if they might provide a service of quickly looking in those Index Cards and telling you what they contain -- or not; but it is surely worth a try. I don't have the e-mail address, but a google search for either library should deliver something to you. There is also a chance that the Society of Australian Genealogists here in Sydney might also have some details on him in their own Index Cards. If you are a member, they will do a certain number of free searches for you as an out-of-Sydney member. Again, a google search will find them and their e-mail addresses etc. Similarly, the Royal Australian Historical Society in Sydney will probably undertake paid research in their indexes for you; and perhaps that service might be free for out-of-town members --- I am not sure. Once more, a google search should find their URL for more information, and e-mail contact details. For me, the index cards held by those 3 bodies should be a "first stop" for most early NSW research. Both of the Societies mentioned have limited funding, provided primarily by their members; and so rely heavily on member volunteers to assist with such searches. They therefore will usually undertake LIMITED searching for their own members who do not reside in the Sydney area; and augment their meagre funds by charging non-members for any searches undertaken. Of course they would each welcome more new members. I assume that you have done a lot of the easy basics, like searching on the State Records of NSW web-site for a mention of him; looking in the published 1928 census; looking in the now-published earlier Musters (although they are only of convicts, I THINK -- it could still be worth looking). Also, a good university library at least should have "Historical Records of Australia" and "Historical Records of New South Wales" where he MIGHT appear in the index if you are lucky. Given the early date, there might be some mention of him in the many published works by Dr SMEE -- I think that they are called "Pioneer Registers" or something like that. Again, a google search for "Smee" and "Pioneer" limited to searching in Australia, should provide some ueseful hits, I should guess. I hope that something amongst these ramblings might help you in your searches.
