    1. [NSW-SE] 1907 OWEN-ROLFE-GEE-MARSH-GRENENGER-KHAN-YOUNG-HOLLANDS-BRAYNE
    2. Wendy Kuzela
    3. The Shoalhaven News, Saturday, March 2, 1907 Alleged Sheep-Stealing. Edward William OWEN was last week charged at the Braidwood Court with stealing sheep, the property of E. R. ROLFE, of Nerriga. The accused was remanded till 2nd March and admitted to bail. The Shoalhaven News, Saturday, March 9, 1907 Alleged Sheep Stealing Edward William OWEN, Nerriga, on bail, appeared before the Braidwood Court on Saturday on a charge of stealing a sheep, the property of E. R. ROLFE, Nerriga. Mr. GEE appeared for accused. Constable MARSH deposed that on the 16th of last month he went to GRENENGER’S tannery, when he met Mr. GRENENGER. Witness was accompanied by Chuja [sic] KHAN, Indian kawker [sic]. Went through some skins and the hawker picked out two skins branded E on rump, and another branded “Dot” between shoulders. Produced one of the skins, which has been in his possession since getting it at the tannery. It ts [sic] a wether skin. The ears had been cut off, apparently after skinning. The sheep had been properly bled when killed, as shown by the skin. Marked the skin, as did Mr. GRENENGER and the hawker. Took possession of the skin, which has been in his possession since taking it. On the 20th went to Nerriga, and with Constable YOUNG made enquiries. Went to Bangor, Nerriga, the residence of Matilda OWEN, mother of accused, with whom he resides. Next day met accused and asked him if he had sold some sheep skins to an Indian hawker. He admitted in Constable YOUNG’S presence having sold three sheep skins to the hawker, branded similar to those already described. In reply to further questions accused said the skins branded E were his mother’s sheep, while the skin branded “Dot” had been branded in mistake by him. He admitted that “Dot” was ROLFE’S brand. When branding he though the sheep, a wether, was ROLFE’S, but afterwards thought it belonged to his mother, because he had received some ewes (100) from ROLFE, on the halves. He knew there were no wethers among them. Accused admitted having cut the ears off the skin. After some further conversation, with consent of accused, made a search, but found no skins or mutton. Witness then produced the skin branded “Dot,” and asked him if it was the skin sold to the hawker, which he admitted, when the accused said he must have killed one of ROLFE’S sheep in mistake. He further said that Ted HOLLANDS was present on the occasion and saw him cut off the ears. During further conversation accused admitted he had no authority to use ROLFE’S brand, when he put the “Dot” on at shearing time. Later on he said it must have been one of ROLFE’S sheep that he killed. He wanted a fat sheep to kill, and took this one, intending to give ROLFE another one for it. YOUNG took notes of the conversation at the time. Then Constable YOUNG said to accused “I now arrest you on a charge of stealing a sheep, the property of E. ROLFE, Nerriga, on or about the 15th January,” and gave him the usual caution that any statement made by him might be used as evidence against him. While under arrest at Nerriga lock-up accused admitted he had not told ROLFE of his manager about killing the sheep. Constable YOUNG corroborated the evidence of Constable MARSH, adding that accused said, when he sold the skins to the hawker, he thought he would get into trouble, but would chance it. Alco/Aleo Chedu [sic] KHAN, hawker, deposed that about three weeks ago he bought three skins from accused and the ears were cut off the skins. F. E. GRENENGER deposed that about a fortnight ago he bought 16 skins from last witness. Did not remember ever seeing a skin with the ears cut off as skin produced. A great number of skins were possed [sic] through the tannery in a year. Edward HOLLANDS, uncle of accused, never saw him killing a sheep nor cutting off a sheep’s ears. Lindsay ROLFE, manager for his father, deposed, no stock would be sold without his knowledge. Knew accused, who had sheep from them on halves, 103 ewes and 2 rams. There may have been odd wethers among the sheep given to accused. Accused had no authority to kill any of the sheep. His father’s registered brand is a Dot, between the shoulders. The skin produced looked like his father’s brand. It is a wether skin, and corresponded with other wethers owned by his father. The accused was committed for trial at the Quarter Sessions in April. Bail in £50 and two sureties in £25 each, which was forthcoming. – “Express.” The Shoalhaven News, Saturday, March 9, 1907 Swearing a Witness. At the Braidwood Police Court on Saturday, during the hearing of a sheep stealing case, a witness, Alio [sic] Skedu [sic] KHAN, caused some hesitancy amongst Court officials as to how he should be sworn. In reply to questions, the witness said that he was a Mohammedan, that he believed in God and an after life, and that he would be punished hereafter if he told lies. When asked by the C.P.S, “Is an oath sworn on the Bible as binding on your conscience as an oath taken on the Koran?” witness said he did not understand. Mr. BRAYNE then took him in hand (states the “Dispatch,”) “Allee same you kisses the Bible allee same you kisses the Koran?” witness was asked. “Yes, allee same,” replied he, placing his hand on his heart. KHAN admitted he had been sworn on the Bible in Nowra, and the oath was then administered to him. (I had a quick look through for a follow-up but haven’t found it yet. May come across it later on closer scrutiny!)

    2. Lynne Thompson
    3. This is a long shot but I am wondering if anyone has RIDLEY or HAIR from Adelong in their tree. The two Mrs's Hair & Ridley were present in 1883 when my GGrandmother gave birth to an Illegitimate child. This 13 year old girl was sent from Carcoar to Adelong to give birth and as her mother came from the Tumut area I thought she may have been sent to relatives. Her mother's family have disappeared and I was hoping the names Ridley or Hair may give me a link. The baby only lived for 7 months and a William SMITH from Adelong was one of the witnesses on the death certificate. . If anyone recognises these names I would love you to contact me. TIA Lynne

    3. Hello Lorraine, I am interest in the land mentioned below "at Mt Carew, a property owned by David Smith". The David Smith from Kiama, is my great great great grandfather and he had a habit of buying land. David Smith's will is dated 2 February 1884, 123 years ago today. Probate: records state, 13 properties owned by David Smith however, there is none mentioned at Mt Carew. I would be interested if you find anymore information, re: Mt Carew, I suppose he could have sold it before making his will. Kind regards. 3. Dear Bill, Thanks for your reply. Trouble is, I have absolutely no idea when he died. I have scoured the records and found nothing. As I said the last thing I can find about him is that he was in Wagga in 1859 He is a real mystery. Pam. 3. Hi Pauline, I know the feeling. Mary Ann Friend married Thomas King at St James Sydney NSW 05 Feb 1845. They were on the same ship (The Neptune 1839) from England. So much has happened in the last 5 weeks I don't know if I'm Arthur or Martha. So today is the day of catching up on an overfull Inbox. I daresay none of your Friends correlate with mine, but as a matter of interest, do you know who Mary Anne Friend married? 3. Dear Pam, If you know when he died, see if he is on the NSW Probate Index. If so, then there will be a Probate Packet at State Records KINGSWOOD which will contain his will, if he made one. If he didn't make one there will be affidavits from people desiring to share in the estate, such as wife and children, grandchildren etc. See www.records.nsw.gov.au and look for Archives in Brief (help sheet) No. 84 and 29 for Deceased Estates which are the old Death Duty files where everything is valued for Stamp Duty purposes. 3. James Wiley was my great grandfather. James Wiley arrived in Australia in 1859 and John and Robert arrived in 1856. I have a fair bit of information on James and Robert (and happy to share), however I am very keen to find out more on JOHN WILEY. The last I know of him he was in Wagga Wagga when he sponsored James in 1859. I have been in touch with Wagga Wagga Family History society but they found nothing. Can anyone help me? I would be most grateful. Pam.
