Dear list. I am new to the list and very interested in learning more about early = life in Pilliga. My grandfather Robert James BUTLER born 1896, West Coona= mble, told me of the many childhood memories that he had of family in the= Pilliga Scrub, always short stories but always ended full a warmth, thes= e stories he told untill he passed away in 1986. If only I had asked more questions in those days and taken notes, grandfa= ther had so much to tell, and I thought my memory could store it. The family names that he spoke of were; BUTLER, ROSS, SMITH. I do not kno= w which of these families were in Pilliga. BUTLER, SMITH, and ROSS, I = do know were in Coonamble, Come-By-Chance, Wee Waa and Wellington. Looking forward to more learning. Seasons greatings Rhonda Newell.
Hello members of the AUS-NSW-PILLIGA mailing list, currently hosted on Rootsweb/Ancestry servers. My name is Peter and I have been the list administrator of this list since it was abandoned. I have no idea when it was abandoned nor who the previous admin was. On 7th January 2020, Rootsweb informed all list admins that they will not be providing any mailing list services after 2nd March 2020, except to keep the archives available (see RW email appended below). In other words, all lists will cease to be. If members want to keep this list active, they will need to host it on a new server. A number of such servers exist, such as groups.io, FaceBook, google groups. I personally do not wish to remain the admin of this list, so one of the members will need to step up as a new administrator if they want to keep this list alive. As a side comment, I think that many of the smaller lists were created on a person's whim in Rootsweb's heyday, and are probably past reviving. I can't remember when the last post to this list was. If there are any questions, please post them to the list, but do it quickly as time is running out quickly. Cheers Peter ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state. Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb. As an alternative to RootsWeb Mailing Lists, Ancestry message boards are a great option to network with others in the genealogy community. Message boards are available for free with an Ancestry registered account. Thank you for being part of the RootsWeb family and contributing to this community. Sincerely, The RootsWeb team ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thank you Stephen. We had William on our tree but had an error with his date of death. We didn’t know of his wife but have now found a funeral notice for her via Trove. She was buried at Rookwood C of E section 12 on Feb 10 1938 and was late of 35 Brunswick St Granville. Sincere apologies for taking so long to reply. Stephen, Can you give any more information please? I tried the NSW BDM indexes for deaths between 1877 and 1890 for various other options for spelling Lakeman without success. I also tried deaths for Henry in those years with no surname but with 4000 possible entries I didn’t look through them all. His death may have been entered under Harry anyway. It would help to know one or both of the parents names if possible. Incidentally, I also had a look for unknown between 1877 and 1890 and there were over 700 people who died in that year span whose names weren’t known. Henry may have died interstate. My wife’s grandfather James HOLLAND was a drover who overlanded cattle between the NT and NSW for several years but was based in Mudgee. I’m sure he would have had deaths amongst his droving team in other states. There was no success in Trove either but there don’t seem to be any papers in Trove for 1890 or earlier for Coonabarabran, Gilgandra or Narrabri. Good luck with your search. David PS I just realised I haven’t looked at cemetery records. Below is part of an email that Peter Lakeman posted to announce that the Pilliga List was up and running again. “As a reminder, this mailing list is for anyone with a genealogical interest around the area known as the "Pilliga Scrub" including the bordering towns (e.g., Gunnedah, Boggabri, Narrabri, WeeWaa, Pilliga, Come-by-Chance, Coonamble, Gilgandra, Dubbo, Wellington, Mudgee, Gulgong, Coolah, Mullaley). This area, on the central northern slopes of New South Wales, was originally 2 million acres of woodland and open forest and is now principally agricultural and grazing lands.” If you have connections to one or more of these towns and also have access to a local paper, there are many papers that are not currently being indexed for Ryerson. Taking the towns in order Gunnedah Namoi Valley Independent only indexed for January 2014 Narrabri NW Courier virtually completely indexed from 1984 to 2011 Wee Waa News 2010 complete Coonamble Times complete 2003 to 2015 Gilgandra Weekly 2011 to 2016 complete also 1973 Dubbo Daily Liberal 2008 to 2010 complete other years from 1987 partially indexed to varying degrees Wellington Times most years from 2012 to the present complete or nearing completion. Other years have varying levels of completion since 1911 often only one or two days per year Mudgee Guardian complete 1960 to the present Mudgee Weekly 2004 to 2016 when production ceased - complete Also Coonabarabran Times ( not on the list) completely indexed 2003 to 2016 There are lots of opportunities for anyone to add to the list that are being indexed for the Pilliga. If you don’t like the thought of being an indexer you can always scan and email the notices from your local paper. I’ll happily try to put you in touch with an indexer who will index your notices for you. There is an indexer who indexes every Wednesday of the Dubbo Daily Liberal. Wellington and Mudgee have current indexers. Please give some thought to joining a friendly group of over 100 indexers who might do indexing or scanning for 5 minutes every week or a few hours a day for 365 days a year. Every little bit helps David Central Coast NSW
Hello subscribers to the aus-nsw-pilliga mailing list. All Rootsweb mailing lists have been nearly dead for the last two or so years. In February this year, Rootsweb upgraded the software that runs their 30,000 or so mailing lists, and after a few teething problems, the system is now up and running. The archives of past posts are gradually being restored, but this may take months. Subscribers may notice minor differences. The main difference for you is that you can register as a subscriber and then be able to adjust options for how you receive emails (e.g. single posts or digests in plain or MIME format, halt mail while on holidays and a few more things). Or you can just leave things as they are. Hi Peter and List First, thank you Peter for acting as List Admin. This is National Volunteers Week - “Give a little, Change a lot” – so let me acknowledge all those family history volunteers who have helped me and millions of others discover our roots. My Pilliga Scrub connection are: JOURDANT (various spellings eg JOURDAN) who panned for gold around Mudgee in the 1860s then ran the Half-Way Inn at Goolma in the 1870-80s. BARLOW originally from Prescot, Lancs who finished up as a saddler in Mudgee (1850s-1870s). Along the way there are also connections with Dubbo, Gulgong. Good luck to all with their searches. Hi I’m also researching a John PRICE with an alias of John SNOW. The one I’m tracing was in a relationship with Elizabeth C ANDERSON and was in the Mudgee area from c 1839. I’m still gathering information on him from State Archives and the Police Gazzette etc. John SNOW had the following children to Elizabeth ANDERSON daughter of David Anderson and Agnes TOZER ( she was a convict on the Mary Ann 1816). Elizabeth C. ANDERSON started having her children with firstly JOHN SNOW (No marriage). The below children listed as he being the father. 1839 Sarah married Edward LAUNT 1840 Mary married THOMAS DILLON 1842 Thomas married Maria GARDINER-PEARSON 1844 Elizabeth married SAWYER-AVERY 1847 Emma maried George LAUNT John SNOW was listed as a farmer living at Reedy creek I’m not sure if this is him or not died Liverpool New South Wales, Australia, Hospital & Asylum Records, 1840-1913 Images coming under separate cover. The Surgeon General's Report contains record of John's death, the Admissions records states John came from England in 1837 and that he died 23 Jan 1878 at the age of 67 and that his ship was the "LYNDHURST" A John SNOW alias PRICE is listed at the State Archives:- Index to Deposition Registers. Any help in finding the correct JOHN PRICE SNOW much appreciated. Regards Dianna
Dear David, According to the National Library of Australia catalogue the person who has copies of the book once lived in Coonabarabran. I guess that was Robyn's former address. There is no Bull family listed in the white pages for that address any more. Have you tried e-mailing the Coonabarabran DPS Family & Local History Group ? Perhaps someone may know her present contact address or be able to help you. There is phone and e-mail contact on this page: http://www.coonabarabranhistorygroup.com.au/ Alternatively, the Coonabarabran Library, http://www.mrl.nsw.gov.au/About/coonabarabran-library which is part of the Macquarie Regional Library service can be contacted from this page: http://www.mrl.nsw.gov.au/contact Perhaps the librarian may be able to answer your question. Hi I'm doing research on the above couple who were living in the Mudgee area. John and HannahMarrried on the 4th of August 1851 in Wellington NSW Church of England then married on the 29th August 1864 in Mudgee Roman Catholic. John stated he was a widower. John died in Mudgee aged 68 25-9-1875 and Hannah died in Redfern in 1897 whilst living at 110 Pitt Street Redfern relict of the late John Molloy of Mudgee. This couple had about 10 Children, I'm hoping to find more on John Molloy's origins, if he was a convict or not. Any help is very much appreciated Kindest regards Dianna
