For those listers who have families from the St Marys area that they are researching, the 1872 Greville's Official Post Office Directory for St Marys might be of interest. The name, occupation and residence are listed on the following website: http://www.penrithcity.nsw.gov.au/history/1872grevilles.htm Danielle Scanned by PeNiCillin http://safe-t-net.pnc.com.au/
Hi list I am interested in finding out the origin of Denintend Place. Its in a 1980s housing estate south of Penrith CBD. Its located within a 60 acre grant to Obadiah Ikin (my ancestor) in 1810. Obadiah leased it to Thomas Rose also in 1810. The grant document says its name was Derrintend Farm. A survey map says its Denintend Farm. As its likely Obadiah gave the farm its name and lived there too we think by himself. So where does the name come from? Obadiah was batised in Whitchurch, Shropshire in 1761 and came out as a soldier in theNSW Corps on the Surprise with his family. The most likely answer is an old suburb of Birmingham - Deritend. Nothing found remotely like Denintend. Any clues anyone? By the way no one has been able to establish Obadiah's death details. Its likely he was deceased before 29 Jan 1813 as his wife is described as a widow in her will - No 42 in NSW. Grahame Thom
