Hi Ned Len Stapleton (a surveyor of St Marys, now deceased) along with his wife Eugenie, established the St Marys Historical Society and contributed a great deal to the gathering of the districts history. Many of their photos and research notes are held at Penrith Library. There is quite a history of drownings and near-drownings at the weir and nowadays noone is allowed to swim there. Incidentally, the Council put the weir in because the river was very treacherous and the weir made it a lot safer for swimmers. Thomas Smith (of Thornton Hall) was one of the instigators to getting the weir constructed. Lorraine Stacker http://movies.yahoo.com.au - Yahoo! Movies - What's on at your local cinema?
