    3. Hi Listers, Am I on the correct list for the Camden / Narellan area? I have a query. I have been told James NEVE was born on 14th August 1840 at a place called WIVENHOC. ( I don't have his BC but had been given to believe he was born at Camden Park where his parents lived.) He was baptised on 30th August 1840 in Narellan. Does anyone on the list know of WIVENHOC ? I will be very grateful for any information. The family later moved down to Adelong Crossing. James Uncle William Neve married Caroline Gumbleton in 1852 and settled in the Camden area. Marie

    3. Thank you to the people who answered my query. Yes it probably was Wivenhoe. I thought that at first but the writing is hard to decipher. I am researching NEVE/STAPLEY/FROST/WELLER to name a few . Marie heartseas@bigpond.com Such is Life

    3. Marie, I have found that a James Neve was an Assistant Gardner on the Wivenhoe estate in 1840 (he was possibly the father(?)). There is no further information other than that entry at Wivenhoe itself. However, if you contact the Camden Area Family History Society Inc, PO Box 679, Camden 2570 (http://www.zipworld.com.au/~scrob/cafhs.html) they may be able to supply you with further information. Also the Camden Historical Society Inc at 40 John Street (PO Box 566), Camden NSW 2570 is another avenue worth exploring. Both of these organisations can at least help you with life in this area at that time. 1. Invitation: A remembering kind of day at Castlereagh, this Sunday
    2. John
    3. Hello All, You are cordially invited to another remembering kind of day at Castlereagh: This Sunday, 20 June, from 10 a.m. onwards ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ WHERE: At the Castlereagh Chapel site (old Methodist church and cemetery) on Castlereagh road just west of the Penrith Lakes Olympic water sports site ~ You can't miss finding it if driving north out of Penrith; just continue on past the big recreational area (after first turning left/west at the round-about) and you will soon reach the old church. You will be heading for the small hall shown in the picture at: http://www.penrithcity.nsw.gov.au/Lib/LocalSuburbs/Images/castlereaghMethodi st.jpg Refreshments, if any, may be had under the back verandah seen in the photo (bring your own refreshments if desired). This old building was orginally a Methodist schoolhouse. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- ENTRY COST: Nil. Ann and John Byrnes have hired the small church hall here for the day and invite you along. * Come along if you like to talk or hear about the past. RSVP: ann.mail@ozemail.com.au or john.mail@ozemail.com.au with your interests. (There may be a last minute cobbling together of an agenda for the meeting which will attempt to blend whatever the common interests of whoever's coming may be.) WHY THIS DATE: It is in memory of, or in recognition of, a near-forgotten woman, Ann Reffin. And who might she be? Very few indeed would know, even amongst what must be her own many descendants. For people often remember or think of their ancestry along male surname line. And there's certainly no "Reffin's" in Australia to remember Ann Reffin. She was one of many of the lower orders sent from Britain to rid it of those deemed undesirable by the authorities, and she arrived mid year two hundred years ago from now. If participants are interested in Ann's origins we may talk a little about the Leistershire Wolds where she was born (although not a great deal is known of her early life and parents). Or if not, we'll likely be talking more generally of Fair Castlereagh - its past, present and future; or any other things (for as noted, no agenda is finalised). Also, those interested are encouraged to after the meeting visit Ann's burial place ~ which is unmarked but fairly certain, and lies near the tomb of the well known pioneer chaplain and magistrate Reverend Henry Fulton (who had buried her on 29 July 1839). Ann's six children were all born here. The early family names of Ann and her descendants in Australia are Byrnes, Wilkinson, Jackson, Sheens, and more. Families her children linked to are: Nicholson, Jackson, Harland, Ablett, Wilkinson, Harris, Lewis (and hence Fredericks), Gorman (and hence Lees), and Nicholas. Families linked with her grand-children are: Yeomans, Smith, Becroft, Wilkinson, Johnson, Cunningham, Ford, Dunbar, McCooey, Hamilton, Dyson, Quinn, Price, Harland, Fraser, Irwin, Wright, Dowling, Sheens, Lovell, Pullman, Hollier, Innes, Cummins, Haynes, Kirkness, and Stokes. Families linked with some of her great-grand-children (those descendants of the youngest son, Samuel) are: Vaughan, Boulton, Flanagan, Parish, Richardson, McLenehan, Ness, Alfred, Hall, Mann, Dunstan, Handley, Nixon, Willett, Stanton, Collins, Ahleman, Anderson, Millen, Lenthall, Matthews, Downey, Gates, Forrester, Witcom, Lack, Hindmarsh, Viant and Miller. Also: Curry, Walker, Payne, Taylor, Rightwell, Grant, Taylor, Bunyan, Winchester, Kendall, Upton, Weir, Cassidy, Kay, Clarke, Seach, Edgar, Gilbert, Rapley, East, Mason, Graham, Pond, Guthrie, Leschke, Woodleigh, Beecroft, Lines, Stonehouse, Seymour, Smith, Wilson, Tuckwell, Ahleman, Andrews, Bayliss, Grimmond, Kingsmill, Rose, Boots, Harvey, Webb, Piper, Allan, Curry, Andrews, Mosse-Robinson and Hair. But this all gets a bit complicated .. Many of the Castlereagh families have intertwined back and forth over the passage of time. Related history may be read at: http://www.geocities.com/doctorjohn72/reffin.htm Hope some will come along on Sunday. See you then. Kind Regards ~ John Byrnes

    3. Hi Marie, I don't think this is the correct list for the Macarthur area (ie Camden/Narellan/Campbelltown), HOWEVER, (and what a coincidence!) I live in the area and it just so happens that I conduct the monthly tours through Wivenhoe at Camden! It also so happens that I am going there tomorrow for a meeting of the Friends of Wivenhoe and I will make enquiries regarding James Neve for you. There is some information about the people who lived and worked there, but I can't promise that there will be anything on that name. Yes, the Google notice was in the National Trust Heritage Festivals list of events this year in Apr/May, but apart from being 'classified' by the Nat Trust - they have nothing else to do with it. The estate is now owned by the Sisters of the Good Samaritan and the 1838 villa forms part of the former Mater Dei Orphanage and now Early Intervention School conducted by the Sisters. The villa itself, called 'Wivenhoe', has recently received wonderful heritage renovations and is only used now for receptions and the like. It was designed by John Verge and built for Charles Cowper (five time Premier of NSW) in 1837/38. The 'Friends' conduct Open Day tours on the first Sunday of every month from 10am to 3pm at $5 per person. We have also published research notes about the history of the house and the owners of the estate. Marie, I'll let you know what I can find out.
