    3. Hi Danielle & List I'm sure i speak for all who attended the Castlereagh celebrations over the weekend , that it was a good weekend, and for me at least quite informative. I'm researching the PARKER family of Castlereagh, that began with John Parker being sentenced to transportation and when he was free he sent for his wife Rebecca and their 3 sons Charles, David and Hezekiah, and they then had 2 more sons at Castlereagh Henry and John. The Parkers helped settle the Castlereagh area and some of the descendants of John and Rebecca still live in the area. Barb

    3. Hello, Danielle wrote: >The list has been a bit quiet in the past couple of weeks. Perhaps it's >time to have a roll call as a number of people have joined the list >recently. Well I am a member of: * Byrnes and Irish study group. * Castlereagh study group. Both these groups are very (meaning very-very) tiny. But we hope to be optimistic and grow to a bit bigger size. Anybody is welcome to join (just email your particulars). Castlereagh study group is geared to anything and everything to do with Castlereagh, both history and prehistory. Anybody interested in this please contact me by email directly as I'd love to hear from you. One initial interest is to exchange references, and build as comprehensive as possibly a reference list or bibliography to Castlereagh. The Byrnes line I am interested in is that of David (Burns) and Ann (Reffin) who lie at rest up on the terrace above Castlereagh flats, in the Anglican cemeterery. David arrived in Sydney in 1800. Ann arrived in 1804. We would like to join with other Nepean family people (by potentially many names - Jackon, Harris, Wilkinson, Sheens, Curry, etc.) who trace back to Ann Reffin ~ to celebrate the occasion of her arrival. Also, it is characteristic of me that I tend to lose things a fair bit, and I have currently lost the email address of the Cranebrook history group ~ whence I would appreciate it if someoine could give me that please. I am a geologist and also have been doing social and political science in later years at Uni of NSW, Kensington (night time only). Kind Regards, John Byrnes

    3. The list has been a bit quiet in the past couple of weeks. Perhaps it's time to have a roll call as a number of people have joined the list recently. I'm researching the Chalker/Charker line. William Chalker was born in 1774 and died at South Creek in 1823. He was transported for 7 years, arriving in 1802. His first wife was Mary Kearns (1768- 1826) - in 1807 an attorney was engaged to draw up Articles of Separation and he met Elizabeth Sheckel who arrived in 1808) shortly after. Elizabeth had a son Daniel (1806-1891) who came with her from England. William and Elizabeth's children are as follows Edward (1809-1890) William James (1810-1891) Maria (1811-1891) Joseph Henry (1813 - 1893) John (1815-1879) - the line I'm am particularly interested in. James (1817-1907) Mary Ann (1818 - 1873) George (1821 - 1893) Elizabeth had another son - Frederick (1825-1850) after William's death, by another man. I also have a general interest in the Penrith area. Kind Regards, Danielle List Admin

    1. [AUS-NSW-PENRITH] Seeking to determine who are the relatives (intermarriage) for BYRNES at Castlereagh
    2. John
    3. To: AUS-NSW-PENRITH-L@rootsweb.com Hello, I am looking to determine which families of Castlereagh are related by marriage to the Byrnes family (descendants of David and Ann) who lived there. I am currently looking into this and am using Patricia Curry's very comprehensive book "A Byrnes Book 1880-2000" plus internet search. Am also hoping to have a board/A-frame at the Castlereagh celebration day and might meet some people there? Myself, my wife, and my uncle Ken are interested (my parents maybe also - but they are in their 80s and in a nursing home and are unlikely to get to Castlereagh ever again). We feel that, as far as we aware, other Byrnes (there's at least 150+ of us descendent from union of David+Ann bearing the Byrnes name and scads more who would be now under other surnames) are likely to be unaware of the Castlereagh celebration coming up. So by my reckoning, and please correct me, or tell me of further families, we have some relationship to the following families who live/d at Castlereagh: SHEEN CURRY LEES GORMAN LEWIS YEOMANS JACKSON Byrnes (my immediate ones anyway) are an Irish/Scots +/- Welsh sort of family. My father's name is "Mostyn" which is a town in northern Wales. My grandfather's middle name is Girvan, which is a town in Scotland I think. Our David forebear came from Ireland and his wife Ann came from England near Nottingham. I only recently found out that the Lewis family had a reunion in 2002 at Castlereagh and advertised in SMH, stating there inter alia that BYRNES is a related name. Ditto, the SHEENs had a reunion recently and also notified that Byrnes was a related name. My apology that we never much took note, and I would like to say belatedly that we ARE most interested to make any such contacts. I hope there will be a Byrnes family study group started, and (if the name is not taken already) a mailing list may be commenced soon as byrnes@yahoogroups.com We also seem to have some lost "family friends" in the district that somebody might know ... My uncle Ken says that he recalls that his parents, Arthur and Janet Byrnes, during the 1930's-1940's retained friends in the Castlereagh/Penrith area. The kids knew them as Aunty Ethel and Uncle Fred. They had a farm somewhere near Penrith that had horses and sulkies. This was the first time that Ken ever saw horses as a boy. He has informed me that their full name was Fred and Ethel WILLIAMS, that they were very old people when he first met them, and they were "real pioneers" of the day. He thinks that if we can find that family then they too, or their decendants, may well recall Janet or Arthur of the William Taylor Byrnes line. Anybody with information, I'd be most pleased to hear from you if you could contact me off-list. Thank you, John Graham Byrnes (Home): z2204020@POP3.student.unsw.edu.au (Work): byrnesj@minerls.nsw.gov.au Ph: (02) 9901 8789

    3. Hi List members A general question about cemeteries. I am involved with the Kilmore and District Historical Society. Recently we have been looking at the plans of the Kilmore General Cemetery and it includes a hospital section. Then looking at the mid 1800s hospital minute books it seems that where a patient is admitted without any means of support and then dies, the Hospital paid for the burial in the hospital section of the cemetery. Question - was this a general practice in those days and do any of the general cemeteries in the Penrith area have a section for the hospital???? Grahame Thom

    2. Kristine Wood
    3. Hi Listers, This may be of interest to someone. The Sydney Morning Herald, 9 Jan 1839, Page 3, Col 3, has 2 notices about the Rose Inn Penrith. The first is by John Perry who is the new proprietor extolling the virtues of his establishment in the hope that old patronage will continue and that new patronage will increase. He adds that he has secured the services of a sober groom to take charge of the stables. He also advertised for a cook and a man to travel on the road with a team. The second is by J A Salmon, informing his patrons that he is retiring from this establishment. He recommends John Perry, late of Sydney. He asks that all accounts be submitted for payment and the settlement of debts immediately as he is going into partnership with his brother-in-law, Mr J L Smith. Kristine Wood

    3. I do apologise to everyone on the list for unwittingly causing this ruckus. I clicked reply to the list and not to Danielle's address. But I also do not agree that keeping replies to family history matters off the list is essential. These list messages attract new members of the list. You would be surprised at how many people go through the archives of the list to find clues to their ancestors. It is fair enough after the first contact to continue corresponding off the list but I enjoy reading who is researching what and if there is a query to see if anyone replied to it. Also if the incoming email is getting too much for you, try subscribing to the digest. You will only receive one email a day with all the messages posted that day. The RootsWeb Review 26 Feb 2003 Vol 6 No 9 has an article about Rootsweb Mailing lists which may be of help to people. I don't know how I started getting the RootsWeb Review but it is interesting to read even though most things are in America. Thank you for your forebearance and I apologise to Danielle too.
