    1. [AUS-NSW-PENRITH] Commercial Street Penrith
    2. Philip L Storey
    3. I am looking for photographs with any history of Commercial Street Penrith. This street ran parallel to the west of Woodriff street( when Woodriff Street extended across Henry to the railway). It is now a car park... the sole tree left standing squared by seats was in the back yard of the last residence to live their a Mrs Jenkins. I grew up in the street from 1954 till 63( maybe 64)..which then became the beautiful splendour of concrete it now is.On the corner of Henry and Commercial Street was a hotel which when my family arrived had long since served it's last drop and was being used as a residence.( two storey sought of Paddington feel)Maybe I'll start to find what the hotel was named and go from there.A Jim Maxwell owned two properties of the 8 or 10 in the street.A milko was directly opposite Commercial on Henry which later became Coles ..now a locksmith.Thanking you all. 3. To: AUS-NSW-PENRITH-L@rootsweb.com Hello All, Next year I can think of three events which come to an age of 200 years since they occurred. One is founding of Crane Brook, another is Vinegar Hill (does anybody know what is being planned to commemorate that?) and the one I'm posting about at the moment is the arrival of a young convict from England who gave rise to many descendants including my family. This was Ann Reffin and to remember her and hopefully get together people who know of the different lineages, or other historical aspects of her life and times, I've begun convening a seminar and hope for the assistance of others to find contacts for Ann's decendants. To save postage, email contacts are particularly welcome: =================================================================== SEMINAR on the passage of 200 years since the arrival of Ann Reffin =================================================================== DATE: 20th June 2004 PLACE: Hall of the Castlereagh Methodist church FEE: A small attendance fee to cover afternoon tea etc. Celebrating 200 years since the arrival of convict Ann Reffin. 2. Hello Listers, I am newly subscribed and so I should offer something about our interests. Our particular family research is divided among various family researchers around the world. Each is given a particular time period or section of a family. Our earliest ancestor in direct line is one Albert Leroy (de Machi) 1177, Normandie, France. Most of our ancestors are in Europe, however one Leroy of our line wandered off to Australia. Mining in Gulgong in the 1870's which began our Australian family. To do with this list is that my Grandfather was for a short time the Headmaster of the 'BullRidge Public School' (I beleive that it was near Springwood, NSW) in the early 1900's. Perhaps of even more interest is the line from my mother. My Grandmother was a PEAKER / ROWBOTHAM, Great Grandmother was Caroline BUTTERWORTH, GG Grandmother Keturah WOODS. Her mother Sarah Mary STUBBS / Thomas YARWOOD (WOODS) Sarah Mary was a daughter of William STUBBS married to Sarah WINGATE whose second husband was James PAINTER. Other names of interest to our research in Australia are :- CHINN, PEAKER, HELLYER, CROMACK, WHEAT, WAKEHAM, CHASELING, EVERINGHAM, ATTEWELL I am looking forward to any assistance that is offered or that we can provide to the list. Kind Regards, Peter Leroy GGG Aunt Mary WOODS who married Matthew James CHASELING (son of Ann EVERINGHAM and John CHASELING

    3. Dear Peter, Noticed your e-mail re PROCTOR. There is a mention of a Private Proctor in one of our books, - World War 1 Hawkesbury Heroes (volume 2) - dont know if he is one of your group. We have extracted the article and printed it below, which originally appeared in the Windsor & Richmond Gazette newspaper, hope it is of interest, Peter. The books are available at the Hawkesbury (Windsor) and Penrith libraries and the Nepean FHS. Dateline ....25 July, 1919 Sgt. Allen & Ptes. Chalmers & Proctor Four soldiers were to have been welcomed at the Kenthurst School of Arts on Saturday night week, but only three were able to be present - Sgt. Allen and Ptes. Chalmers and Proctor. They were all old members of the Kenthurst Rifle Club, and were at the war about 3 years. The hall was nicely decorated by the Welcome Home Committee and the President, J. N. Griffin, occupied the chair. J. H. Cusbert presented to each soldier a suitably inscribed gold medal, a nice fat cheque, and the Baulkham Hills Shire certificate. Both these gentlemen warmly congratulated the returned soldiers on what they had done for the Empire and their country and for humanity. There was a large crowd present and the proceedings were most enthusiastic. After the principal business of the evening, the time was pleasantly spent till midnight in songs, games and dancing. Among those who assisted in the programme were Miss Rose Clements and S. A. Mawson, while Miss Thompson provided the music for the dance. It was one of the brightest little functions of the kind yet held at Kenthurst. A check in the Windsor & Richmond Gazette newspaper indexes for 1911-15 and 1916-20 for Andrew Thompson, and Hacket might be worthwhile, too Peter. Best wishes, Rod & Wendy Gow Peter John Proctor wrote: > Hi Does anyone have any information on Children of William Proctor and Emma Stanton: ****************************************************************************** Check out our home page for information on our latest newspaper indexing projects and works in progress at http://www3.ceinternet.com.au/~rgow Indexing newspapers - a fascinating hobby - why not index your local newspaper as a resource to other family history researchers. ******************************************************************************

    3. To: AUS-NSW-PENRITH-L Hello All, There is a notice in the paper which will be of interest if you haven't seen it: It announces the death of Rev. Gloster Stuart Udy MBE ("Doc") who was in charge of local aspect of the Upper Room evangelical organisation and of the old (and restored) Methodist church and graveyard, and new conference centre, also called the "Sacred Acre" at Castlereagh ,,,, This is one piece of old Castlereagh which is most definitely sacred-forever against being quarried away, and is no doubt very well know to many who are getting this list mail. It appears that Rev. Udy choose to be interred at Castlereagh, into which area I'm sure he must have ploughed so much of his energy and devotion (I have never met him myself and was just getting into email with him, and had received one reply, generally on the theme of the graveyard there and about the cost of hiring the hall at the sacred acre, now called the Upper Room Academy, for a family reunion). I was suprised to see of his death and the notice says that he died "suddenly" at his home, on May 4th, aged 84. He will be buried at upper Castlereagh at 3 p.m. on Monday 12th May, following a service to start at 11 a.m. at West Dundas Uniting Church in Kissing Point Road, Dundas.
