Hi Mags, We have an Alfred Saunders Holmes b1866 who married Mary Becroft 22 Jun 1889 at St Marys. He may have been a brother to your John Holmes. Alfred was an Alderman and lived at Erskinville. I hope this is of some help. Would anyone be researching the Holmes family of St. Mary's? John Holmes married Mary Williams Sofala N.S.W. 1866. John Holmes died 16/7/1920 aged 77yrs at St. Mary's. Mary Holmes (nee Williams) died 26/10/1919 at St. Mary's. Both are buried in the Presbyterian Section at St. Mary's. Daughters in the area were Frances A. married to Algred G. Greenstreet and Lilly Elizabeth married to Robert J. Millen. I am trying to establish the parentage for John Holmes as it would seem incorrect details were given on his marriage certificate. Many Thanks, Mags. Townsville, Qld. justmags@bigfoot.com
Hi everyone Last week the new look Penrith City website went online. It is still at the old address at http://www.penrithcity.nsw.gov.au <http://www.penrithcity.nsw.gov.au/> but the whole format has changed. For those looking for genie information you can access this currently by clicking on the "History" tab at the top of the screen. A new tab "Family history" link will be added to the History section in the next few weeks. At the moment the website is a hybrid looking specimen! All of the old pages (.htm) have to be converted to the new web page format (asp) and work has been progressing on this since mid December. Inevitably there will be the odd missing link etc so bear with us during this transition phase. One of the new features which is excellent is the ability to search the website so if you can't find something, try this option or alternatively contact the library. Best wishes Jan
Hi Listers, In about 1913, 1924 and 1926, almost a whole family of siblings left Birtley in Co. Durham and headed for NSW, Australia. All the families have the name WITHERSPOON in common where either the husband was a WITHERSPOON or the wife's maiden name was WITHERSPOON. George Thomas WITHERSPOON and his wife Mary nee WEBB were the first to arrive in about 1913. George and Mary did return to England in the late 1910s, early 1920s but soon returned to NSW. Then, in about 1924 and again in about 1926, other members of this family made the trip. Thomas HOWITT and his wife Lily nee WITHERSPOON and family. James RICHARDSON and his wife Mary Elizabeth WITHERSPOON and family. Annabella WITHERSPOON , a widow and her family. and Frederick WITHERSPOON a widower. I am in contact with a couple of descendants form some of these families but would like to hear from others that may be on this list and looking into their families history. Bob Witherspoon. Durham. England.

Hi there Danielle, tis Bernice here..Person died at Surrey Hills,I don't think he lived at Penrith. He was only in Australia 18mths,he was from Germany. Thanks, have a nice day.
Bernice Sorry to be a bearer of bad news but there is nothing listed for that name in either Rookwood or Northern Suburbs, now Macquarie Cemeteries. Which indicate that maybe there is no headstone or he was cremated. Hello Liz I can look up the name for you if you give me the surname. Haven't had time to look at my computer till now. Regards Ann Morse\
Sorry Liz I can't help you... but as an old Penrithite now living in Melbourne (boo hiss) I have people look at me strangely when they ask how I am feeling and I reply, 'As crook as Rookwood mate.' They look at me strangely and then I have to explain what I mean... well let me tell you... today I am as crook as Rookwood. All the best with your quest... maybe contact the Cemetery Trust... they may have things on CD or something. Lia I just went to Google and typed in Rookwood Cemetery and heaps of stuff came up. There is a CD with 235,000 names on it available at the National Library (other libraries would have it) and that may contain what you are looking for. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Greetings all, Henry Hockney DAWSON moved from the Shoalhaven in 1853, possibly to work at Bayly Park before moving on to Erskine Park. He died there in May 1863 and is buried at St Mary Magdalene at St Marys. I would life to make contact with anyone with a connection to the family or has information about Bayly Park or Erskine Park. Regards Joan Scanned by PeNiCillin http://safe-t-net.pnc.com.au/
Hello, Ann and John Byrnes wish to invite other family or descendants of Ann Reffin, or anyone else interested, to a remembrance day commemorating Ann's arrival in Sydney in 1804. And we also hope to make or continue contact with others who may have common interests in such things, prior to the get-together at Castlereagh that is planned for Sunday 20th June. The 'Old church hall' at Castlereagh has been booked for that day (This is the former Methodist, now Uniting, church on the eastern side of Castlereagh Road at Upper Castlereagh - you literally can't miss it, so may not need a map). On 20th June we meet at the hall and some refreshments will be available. There will be a visit to Ann's grave or close vicinity (and deduction of it's likely exact position, as it's unmarked) at the old Anglican or General Cemetery above the alluvial plains. Meeting and exchange of information by family historians of different branches or surnames is encouraged for this day. Please bring a display panel or anything you can, showing linkages back to Ann. Moreover, if digital material (fragmentary or coherent information or images, all is welcome) can be supplied well beforehand we would undertake to compile it onto one CD-ROM and have multiple copies available for giving away on the day. Ann Reffin's descendants must be quite numerous by now, and they would be distributed across many different surnames that have connection with the Castlereagh area. Ann was married to David Burns/Byrnes a convict or exile from Ireland, sent here in the wake of the great uprising of 1798 and possibly transported for having taken the United Irishmen oaths. Ann herself was from Walton on the Wolds in the Leicestershire Wolds and when young she committed a crime near Nottingham. We also enjoy to converse with those who have museum-like interests or inclinations and would like to see preserved more of the history or heritage of the Castlereagh alluvial plains ~ that are of course fast vanishing as Sydney's sand supply. Kind Regards, John Byrnes Contact: john.mail@ozemail.com.au or a.byrnes@student.unsw.edu.au or ann.mail@ozemail.com.au
