    1. [AUS-NSW-PENRITH] J W Gardiner - WW1
    2. Pat Curry
    3. I have a WW1 record for John William Gardiner (1894 - 1917)who married Alice Constance Harvey in 1913. John and Alice had 3 children, Frank (married M LoSchiavo), Olive (married Frank Masters), and John William France, (married Gwendoline Hollier), when John died in the AIF in France in WW1. I would like to see his details in the WW1 site in Penrith City e-history. If there is anyone out there who is related to him, or has a photograph, who would also like to see his details on that website, I would be willing to either give you the details from his War record, or to work with you on the information to be forwarded to the e-history site. 2. Jan & Peter Herivel
    3. Hi everyone When researching the WW1 Penrith soldiers who didn't come home, I have come across references to Penrith nurses who served during the war. 6 are listed on the St Stephens Honor Roll (which listed all parishioners who served during the war): 1 Matron Adelaide Maud Kellett - who assisted with the compilation of the army nurse records for the WW1 official history 2 Jessie Bassetti - born around Windsor 3 Stella Lillian Colless (daughter of Alfred Colless, editor of the Nepean Times) 4 Vida Greentree 5 Fay Wardman 6 Annie West this is quite a large contingent from the Penrith area and I am sure there are others that I have not yet found. If you have any details on these nurses, can you please email them to me or send to: Jan Herivel c/- Research Room Penrith City Library PO Box 61 Penrith 2751. The WW1 project is coming along in leaps and bounds and would not be possible without the assistance of the Penrith rootsweb community. Best wishes Jan

When they are due to move the list servers, they will halt operation on the machine in order to complete the move. This means that no mail will be sent or posted to the lists. They don't expect to lose any messages so once the new server is up and running, any messages will be posted to the list. Please continue to post to the Penrith Rootsweb list, but don't be concerned if your message shouldn't appear for awhile. Kind Regards, Danielle Embleton List Admin

    3. There are three main Clth War cemeteries - Heliopolis in the outskirts of Cairo, and one, with rather more Australian graves, in Old Cairo. "Old" being two thousand years or so. The adjacent location is full of Christian history. This latter cemetery was often closed in the past. It would be worth your while checking with the Consul at the Australian Embassy re access. The third, fromWW11, is at El Alamein. on the Mediterranean Coast west of Alexandria. Many Australian Graves. I recall one Australian who was 16! Spectacular and stimulating city! I lived there for three years in the eighties. 3. I've had a quick look at the site and it is great to see that there are people out there in Internet land that have similar interests as myself. Can I just correct a small error in the page. Alexander Walker AITCHISON was KIA 22/08/15 and not 1918. The following is a little bio information I have on him. AITCHISON, Alexander Walker: was born in Penrith in 1884 to parents David Firth and Elsie Aitchison. He was married to Elsie Mary of 10 Banks Avenue Daceyville Enlisted 19 February 1915. 'D' Company 18th Battalion (under Major Thomas McPherson). He was killed in action during the first assault on Hill 60 22 Augsut 1915 Buried at the Hill 60 Cemetery on the Gallipoli peninsula. I can supply a little information on D Company's assault on Hill 60. There is also another Nepean Times newspaper report on George Clissold that is not recorded under his bio. Late Sergeant G Clissold Mr TD Clissold, Castlereagh Rd, Penrith has received the following sympahtetic and appreciative letter from Lieutenant Hill, 18th Battalion; AIF, France, concerning the death of his son (Sergeant G Clissold), who was killed in action in France:- "Dear sir, - I feel it is my duty to write and offer my heartiest sympathy in connection with the death of your son, Sergeant Clissold. I would also be glad if you would please convey the same to his wife and children and all those connected with him. As you are perhaps aware he acted as Platoon Sergeant from the time I joined the 18th Battalion at Liverpool up to the time of his sad end. As a soldier he possessed all the necessary qualities. On the parade ground he commanded the complete respect of his men, and possessed a happy knack of getting the best out of them by kind and just treatment without harshness. He was known to all the lads as 'dad' and they thought there was no one like him. On the field of battle I have never had the pleasure of seeing a braver and cooler man. The first day we entered the trenches a large comb burst a few yards from him. How he escaped injury is a miracle. Instead of seeking a safer spot, as did most of the other men did, he coolly smiled and retained his post. He was a tiger to work, and whenever there was a dangerous job to be done, such as digging a trench, he was the first to get onto a pick or shovel, and have the work done without delay. It was when carrying out a duty of this kind that he met his end. The trench in question could not be dug without being in view of the enemy, and as soon as your son stepped out he was shot through the body by a German sniper. It may console you a little to know he suffered no pain, death being almost instantaneous. We gave him as good a burial as it was possible under the circumstances, and have arranged to have his personal belongings sent on to you as soon as possible through the military authorities. Personally I am greatly cut up over his death. I was never more attached to any man, and I feel that I have lost a good and true friend."
