Dear Listers, As if I haven't got enough to do with my time I have decided to try and gather names of people who were buried by my gggrandfather and his sons, and grandsons, mentioned above. Please also forgive the cross postings The firm started abt 1850 at South Head Rd, then Oxford Street and also Newtown, and continued in the family until 1975. It is still an operating company but is now owned by an American firm of undertakers. Some years ago I attempted to find some records for the firm but were told that they had all been taken to the tip when new management took over. If you have anyone buried by my family I would love to hear from you and hopefully I can build up a database which would be available to all. Some burials would have been performed by my Dad's grndfather Henry and also by his gtuncle William who died in 1900. Please contact me if you can help, either by sending photocopies to me, by scanning or by emailing me data. Many thanks in advance Sandra Armstrong in Maryborough Qld ( nee Dixon)

I have some information on one Andrews family because they have several connections to members of the Hair and Byrnes families. I pass on the following information as given to me. The George and Eliza Andrews mentioned by Kristine were George Andrews and Eliza Clarke, married 1870 registered Penrith. George was the son of George Andrews who married Margaret Jepson, who was the son of George Andrews who married Margaret Gordon. This George Andrews was the son of John Andrews who married Ann Tunks. John Andrews arrived in Australia via the Glatton as a convict in 1803, and was later one of the settlers granted land in the Castlereagh area. Their children were: Rose Andrews, born 1872, believed to have married ? Luxford; George William Andrews b 1874 married Mary Ann Hair; Charles Joseph Andrews born 1876, married Minna August Johnson, (daughter of Emma Byrnes & Thomas Johnson); Henry Roland Andrews, born 1878, married Daisy Emma? Annie Louise Andrews, born 1882, believed to have married ? Dowling; Theresa Andrews, born 1884; Edward Beach Andrews, born 1888, married Mignonette Hair; Isabel Andrews, born 1891, Albert Gordon Andrews, born 1894 Andrews Road Castlereagh is named after this family - George William and Mary Ann Andrews' house was where the roundabout is now. Edward Beach Andrews owned a great deal of land in the Castlereagh area, which was eventually sold to the quarries, and is now part of the Lakes project. If any of this is known to be incorrect, I would be pleased to have it corrected. One other Andrews person I would like to know more about is the Elizabeth Andrews who married Frederick Mortimer Vine at the Wesleyan Church Penrith in September 1867. I have a marriage transcription, but there are no more details of her on it. Hoping to hear more, Pat Curry
I have been researching the Andrews family of St Marys for a few years and it has been difficult at times because of the number of Andrews families in the area. My gt gt grandfather was Thomas Andrews. There were 2 Thomas Andrews in the district at the same time. My Thomas was born 1845 to Samuel and Harriet Andrews [Judge] in St Marys. He married Corah Maskey on 26 Dec 1869 and had 10 children, James, Frederick, Leonard, Tulip, Lydia, Mildred, Miriam, Bruce, Harry and Gertrude. Thomas died in 1942 in St Marys. The other Thomas Andrews was born in 1848 to Stephen and Elizabeth Andrews. Both Stephen and Elizabeth died in Mt Druitt. This Thomas married Mary Ann Sophia Soames in 1871, but she died in 1872 in childbirth [daughter Laura Alice]. He then married Angelina Jane Jones and had children, Emma, Ethel, Walter and Ernest. This Thomas died in 1945. Both Thomas lived near or on the Western Road, my Thomas at Werrington and the other at St Marys. Also in the St Marys/Penrith area there appears to have been 5 Andrews families [that I know of]. Samuel and Harriet Andrews [nee Judge] settled in the area in 1839. Their children were John, Fanny, Harriet, Eliza, Charles, Thomas, William, Sarah, James, Henry, Mary Ann and Alice Ann. Charles and Jane Andrews [Davis] arrived about 1848. There children were Sarah, Rebecca, Caroline, Mary Jane, Charlotte, Lucy, Charles Josiah, William Henry John, Thomas Adam and Edward Clement. Stephen and Elizabeth Andrews lived in the Mt Druitt area. I am unsure when they arrived [I think prior to 1842] but the few children I can find in the BDMs were John, Edward, William, Thomas and Henry. George and Eliza Andrews of Dunheved & Castlereagh arrived around 1870 and had children Henry Roland, Rose, George William, Annie Louise, Edward Beach, Isabel and Albert Gordon. George worked for John Lethbridge King. Thomas James {known as James] Andrews was a butcher of Penrith. He first married Mary Brownlow in 1853 and had children Charlotte, Harriett and George. His second marriage was to Harriett Rooney in 1872 and had children Alfred, Edwin and Rebecca. Harriett was the daughter of a policeman and was the licensee of an hotel in Penrith. I hope this may be of interest to someone. Kristine Wood
I'm interested in locating any details about James Clarke. James Clarke was married at Walgett in 1893 to Grace Jane New. Later they lived at Warren. They had about 9 children including a son who died in World War I James was apparently born in the 1860's, supposedly at Penrith. His son's birth certificate says he was a carpenter. Any suggestions Robert Heal
Hi Jill & Bob Kramer I have an interest in Conrad Merz and the property that he owned or leased around Frogmore. There is also the story that "Nellie" the so-called last of the local Aboriginal tribe was born on a piece of property that Conrad Merz owned around where the University of Western Sydney is now. Do you have information on any of the land he owned? I work at Penrith City Library and any information on the family would be much appreciated for our Biography files. Thank you Barbara, I did not have that information, I will add it into my collection. Thank you also Pat, I am not sure about your Elizabeth Frederica Merz but sounds like she must have come from the same family.I will contact you off list with more of the details and we will see if it all adds up. Anyone else who may have any information please contact me. I have been told that there are some articles in the archives of the Nepean Times at Penrith library. Is there anyone out there that frequents this library that could possible look these articles up? Thanks again for the information that I have received Jill
Hello everyone I am researching the Merz and Kelsey families. Conrad Merz arrived in Australia from Germany in 1855 with his wife Margaret and children including my gr.grandfather Philip Merz. He married Mary Kelsey and they had children, including my grandmother Edith Merz. Mary Kelsey's father was James Boots. If anyone has any information no matter how small, or are researching one or all of these families, I would love to hear from you, and am willing to share whatever information I have and also some photos. Thanks Jill
Lorraine Just to let you know, I researched the Skimmings family as part of my Masters thesis on John Verge's estate Austral Eden. The Skimmings were part of the study. A copy of my thesis was deposited in 1999 with the Macleay River Historical Society as well as the research notes including my transcriptions of BDM's from the Kempsey courthouse. The family were on Austral Eden in the late 1860s. If you require some of this information let me know. Hi all I have found a couple more names on the St Stephens list: Esther Coggin(s) Constance Neale. An update on Stella Colless and Constance Neale. >From Guns and Brooches: Australian Army Nursing from the Boer War to the Gulf War by Jan Bassett, published by Oxford Press 1992. p 32 "The first seven nurses to serve overseas during the Great War neither belonged to the AANS [Australian Army Nursing Service] nor to any other service, an indication of the disorganisation which characterized contemporary arrangements for the nursing of Australia's sick and wounded." [the footnote lists the nurses as: Sarah de Mestre, Rose Kirkcaldie, Stella Colless, Sister Birtenshaw, Elizabeth Macmillan, Rachel Clouston and Constance Neale (later Holliday). All were past or present nurses from Sydney's Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.] "Swept up in the widespread excitement about the War, the seven simply went to Garden Island on about 20 August 1914, and offered their services for the "Grantala", which was then being hastily fitted out as a hospital ship." The book then described their time in Rabaul and Suva before returning to Sydney and being paid off just before Christmas. The nurses' experiences in tending their patients, hindered rather than helped their later wartime careers. On return they had to reapply for Active Service and their work with the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force in Rabaul did not count towards their seniority in the AIF! Hope this of interest. Imagine a small town like Penrith providing 2 of the first 7 nurses to serve overseas on active duty! Best wishes Jan

Hiya All, I have been granted my request of a new list.Hopefully this will help anyone with interests in the Blue Mountains Area of NSW to help others. A few of the areas I hope will be covered are Bilpin, Mount Tomah, Bell Blaxland Emu Plains Faulconbridge Glenbrook Hartley Hazelbrook Jenolan Caves Katoomba Kurrajong Lapstone Lawson Leura Linden Medlow Bath Mount Victoria Mount Wilson Oberon Springwood Wentworth Falls Woodford . Whilst I realise that some of these places touch upon the areas of the Penrith and Hunter lists, I was unable to find one which targeted the above areas. This is my first attempt at being a listperson, so hopefully those out there in the know will help me if a few boo boos sneak through on my behalf. People can subscribe to the list in mail mode by sending a message to AUS-NSW-BLUEMOUNTAINS-L-request@rootsweb.com that contains the word subscribe and nothing else. If you prefer digest mode, send the command instead to AUS-NSW-BLUEMOUNTAINS-D-request@rootsweb.com.
