Hi Listers, I found this in the Commercial Journal 7/8/1839 Parramatta Sir Maurice O'Connelland suite visited Parramatta, on Saturday, the 3rd instant, to take a gratifying view of the property lately decided in th Supreme Court in his favour. I will check previous issues for the Supreme Court reports to find out exactly which property. Kristine Wood
Hi Listers, Does anyone have some information on Parramatta Hospital? I have seen references to it as early as 1841 in the newspapers. Kristine Wood
Hi Listers, Penrith was mentioned in the first issue of 'The Colonial Observer" 7 Oct 1841. They didnt seem impressed with the entertainment. Penrith Nothing is talked of in Penrith but the approaching races. Some very fine horses have turned out, and the place is in the meantime very stirring and gay. We do not trouble ourselves much with such matters, but shall be happy to communicate the result to the public. We wish to create a higher taste - a desire for a more rational species of enjoyment, to which we will have greater pleasure in catering. Then in the Colonial Observer 10 June 1843. Penrith Total Abstinence Society. The prevailing dulness and monotony in the peaceful village of Penrith was again interrupted by a placard annoucing a second public meeting of the Windsor Total Abstinence Society, to be held in the Court HOuse on Wednesday (the 31st ultimo) ......... This took up almost 2 full columns of the paper on the talks by the president and secretary. Stirring stuff In the Parramatta Chronicle of 30 December 1843. Penrith - Mr Alexander Fraser, residing near Penrith, from whom a private still was seized, about the end of last month, was fined 100 pound by the Penrith bench on Friday (yesterday) week; and sentenced , in default of payment, to three months imprisonment. The evils of drink. In the same paper was this wonderful journalist poetry. William Mills, a discharged soldier, and veteran in the ranks of "the noble army of martyrs" in the cause of intemperance, who had been pouring copious libations on the shrine of his divinity, and was robbed of his watch, while so zealously sacrificing, was convicted, for the fifth time within the last twelve months of excessive devotion, and fined 20s with 1s costs, or 72 hours solitary confinement. I suppose it was better than saying he was drunk again. These old newspapers can be accessed on www.nla.gov.au/ferg/browselist.html I find it takes awhile to download at times. Kristine Wood
Would anyone know where Lambert's Inn, Parramatta, was in 1863? Also, what was Forester's Lodge, in the same period? William Buckley drowned in the Parramatta River near Lambert's Inn in 1863, after attending a meeting of the Forester's Lodge. Any help would be appreciated. Diane Parton
Hi Listers, This was in the SMH of 2/9/1854. There are 2 reports on the same incident. Accident - On Friday last an aboriginal black named Bobby Dicky, in the service of Mr Robert Neal, of Penrith, as drayman, was returning home from Sydney with his team, and had proceeded as far as Concord, when, from some cause or other not explained, he fell off the dray in front of the wheel, which passing over his leg broke it. The poor fellow lay there a considerable time, until information of the occurrence reached Constable Graham, who took instant measures for his conveyance to the Sydney Infirmary. The other report from Parramatta states - A team passing down the Parramatta Road to Sydney, and said to belong to Robert Neill, of Penrith, on Thursday night last, had just passed the 'Diggers Arms Inn," when a poor aboriginal native, about 35 years of age, fell from the load, and the wheel passed over his left leg, smashing it to splinters; the neighbours were attracted by the groans of the poor sufferer and took him to the inn, where we saw the good land-lady and others endeavouring to comfort the poor fellow, by washing his wounds, &c. Hi Listers, In the Sydney Morning Herald 27 March 1854 was the following Auction Notice. I thought it was interesting because they listed so many names of the landed gentry. Mort & Co have received instructions from Messrs. E and A Blaxland to sell by public auction at their rooms, Pitt street on Wednesday 19th March at 11 o'clock. The following valuable lands - Lot 1 455 acres, county of Camden, bounded on the north by Sir Charles Nicholson's portion of the Luddenham Estate, on the east by half a mile frontage of the Cowpasture River, on the west by the Warragumba River, and on the south by the property of Mr Hamilton, late of George street, boot and shoe maker. 200 acres of this block consists of soil of the richest description, for any thing, and the rest is fine grazing land. This block of land is finely situated for scenery, in the immediate vicinity of Norton's Basin, and close to the estates of Cox, Stewart, Norton, and others., and adjoins Luddenham, the estate of Sir Charles Nicholson. Lot 2 1280 acres, in the county of Camden, being a portion of the Cowpasture Forst, bounded on the east by the property of Messrs. Wilcox and Radforth and by Government Land extending to the Nepean River, on the west by Government Land extending to the Warragumba River. It is distant about one mile from Marden's purchase of 640 acres. This land is not far distant from Camden, the Estate of the Messrs. Macarthur, and consists of fine grazing land, with valuable timber thereon, and patches fit for cultivation. Lot 3 40 acres, known as White's 40 acre Farm, in the district of Bringelly; bounded on the south by Stuart's 300 acres (now Captain P P King's); on the north and wet by a branch of South Creek; and on the east by Captain King's property. This is a capital little farm, all cleared , much of it suitalbe for crops, and the rest fine grazing land. It is well watered. Lot 4 100 acres; bounded on the east by a branch of South Creek; on the south and west by Luddenham Estate, the property of Sir Charles Nicholson; and on the north by a road leading from Bringelly to Sydney. A creek runs through this land, which is beautifully watered, and the land is cleared and fit for grazing or agricultural purposes. Parties on the look out for first-rate land, in a good locality, should watch this sale - as independent of good soil, well timbered, and plenty of water, the neighbourhood is respectable, and the proximity to Sydney affords a great advantage for the farmer and grazier. Hi all, Is there anybody on the list who is a member of the Nepean Family History Society who would be willing to have a look at a microfiche for me? I am looking for the record of my GGG Grandmother who was a convict at the Female Factory at Parramatta. I notice they have the following on fiche. FEMALE FACTORY PARRAMATTA 1826-1848 Her name was Theresa Kelly. If anyone is able to assist it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks from Qld Sue
Hi Listers, This was a notice of sale in the Sydney Morning Herald on 26/12/1853. I thought it was interesting . Mount Druitt Twenty-six miles from Sydney on the Western Road. Day of Sale, Friday, 20th January, 1854 at eleven o'clock. Mr Mort has received instructions to sell by public auction, at his rooms, Pitt street, on the above day. The Estate of Mount Druitt, situate on the Western Road, between Parramatta and Penrith, and two miles on the Sydney side of the rural township of St Mary's, South Creek, distant from Sydney about 26 miles. This splendid property is bounded for about two miles by the fresh waters of Rope's Creek, which divides it from Dunheved, the residence of Robert Lethbridge, Esq., and property of Captain P P King RN. It has considerable frontage to the Great Western Road from Sydney to Bathurst, along which coaches pass daily, and there is daily postal communication with Sydney. The estate, which is a grant from the Crown of 1,000 acres, nearly 500 of which are cleared and stumped, is subdivided into convenient paddocks by several miles of fencing. Some portions are in cultivation, and the luxuriant crops evince the rich quality fo the soil. It is well-known as a capital dairy farm. Its grazing capabilities being first-rate, and as a depot for breeding horse stock it cannot be surpassed. The bush portion of the estate is thickly timbered with magnificent specimens of iron bark, gum, box &c, which, when the railway to Parramatta is completed, can be transmitted to Sydney at but little cost and will afford a capital opening for the erection of steam saw mills. The HOMESTEAD consists of the overseer's cottage, a large barn, stables, men's huts, piggery, stockyard, fowl house, &c. The Mansion was unfortunately destroyed by fire about three years since, but the site on which it stood cannot be surpassed for the position of a residence. There is also a large garden, with vineyard, and choice selection of fruit trees; the whole approached by a carriage road nearly a mile in length, through the park-like grounds, skirting the Great Western Road, from whence it is entered by a circular gateway, with handsome iron gates on stone pillars, and elegant gatekeepers lodge adjoining. The Barn has at one end a flour mill, with extra pair of stones, which can be worked either by horses or bullocks; and as a large quantity of wheat is grown in the neighbourhood this mill has been the source of a good income. A portion of the estate consists of a small farm, containing cottage, with three cultivation paddocks, and other improvements. There are also several wells in parts beside the Creek, and plenty of water-holes or lagoons. The pond on the lawn, well known to travellers on the Western Road, is inexhaustible, and beyond all value in time of drought. This property was selected by the late Major Druitt some thirty years ago, on account of its fine water and grazing qualifications; and a fortune has already been laid out upon it to render it complete and perfect. Intending purchasers are invited to inspect the ___ prior to the day of sale. Kristine Wood

Hi Listers, This isnt to do with Penrith but I thought it was quite interesting. Sydney Morning Herald 17/3/1854 - Windsor Death of the Oldest White Australian. On Friday last, Mrs Diana Teale, widow of the late Mr John Teale, miller of Windsor, died at her residence in Macquarie street. We believe Mrs Teale was the second white person born, and the first to live to maturity, after birth, in the colony since its foundation by Governor Phillip sixty-six years ago, she having been born a few months thereafter. We are also informed that Mrs Teale's father, the late Mr Joseph Kable, was the first man in the party of the above named Governor to set his foot on shore at Sydney, in the name of the British Government.
