The central figure in the design of the certificate is that of a woman, gracious yet resolute, who typifies the Society and its work. Her right hand rests upon the head of a ragged little orphan child, who is still frightened by the roar of the waves from which she has been plucked, buries her face in her protectors skirts. Standing firmly above the surging ocean on solid rock, the woman stretches forth her left hand to place a laurel wreath upon the head of the brave, which wreath she lightly rests upon a lifebouy encircling the Society's medal. As background to the allegorical figure is a breadth of angry grey-green sea, above which the blackness of the threatening sky is relieved only by a far distant gleam of light on the extreme verge of the horizion. A ship with rent sails and shattered masts is struggling in the surf. Upon the high rocks, dimly visible amidst the spray, is a crowd of fisherman whose efforts to fire a life-line from shore to ship has just been crowned with success. The side of the picture on which the figure stands represents an altogether clearer and brighter scene than that which illustrates the storm and wreck, terminating at its base with a moderately calm sea, with Father Neptunes head appearing out of the foam, with uplifted arm, Trident in hand, looking up to the figure with approving admiration of her noble work. At the rear of the picture is a ships mast, with a much used anchor, both exemplifying the standing of the Society and its work in the past. A cable rope surrounds the designe, and the whole is borderd with small sea shells. Please note these are the words printed on the back of the booklet, not my words.
