Hi Bill These aren't my FITZSIMMONS people I'm sorry to say. The first "New Aussie" FITZSIMMONS in my line is Michael FITZSIMMONS, a convict from Co Louth, Ireland who arrived in Australia in 1831, and lived and settled in the Dungog area. His eldest daughter Ann FITZSIMMONS emigrated to Australia after her mother (Michael's first wife) died back in Ireland. Michael, meanwhile had commenced a LARGE family with Mary MCNAMARA in Dungog. Ann married Thomas CURRAN in Dungog in 1854 and they moved north to GRAFTON when Thomas contracted TB, presumably for the better weather. They had three children at the time, Margaret AKA Maggie, Jemima Wyndham and Thomas William CURRAN. Thomas died in 1865, and Ann remarried Charles WILLIAMS, an American in 1866. Ann died in suspicious circumstances in 1867 in Grafton, orphaning her 3 children at ages 11, 9 and 7. Now here is the mystery; I have no idea who looked after the children after their parent's deaths, and I can't find a marriage or death record in the NSW BDM for Jemima at all. It looks like Maggie married Isaac DUFFY in 1874 in Grafton. They seem to have had only one child, Alexander DUFFY in 1876, and then I cant find a death record for Maggie, although I did find one for Isaac in 1882. I do know what happened to Thomas however - he was my GGGrandfather. He believed for his whole life that he was born in Grafton (however it was Dungog) and he consistently understated his age by three years his whole life. Does anyone know what happened to Maggie or Jemima? I have tried every version of the spelling of Jemima, and found only one marriage in Grafton: 3236/1879 BYRNES JOHN THO NEWPORT JAMINA GRAFTON I cant find a birth for a Jamina or Jemima NEWPORT. Did these people adopt Jemima? Does anyone have connections to the above people? Any info or help would be greatly appreciated.
