    3. Hello Listers, I would like to update you all on what has been happening with our research. Firstly, we have found 'our' Michael MURRAY (after searching a large number of BDM transcriptions for NSW). After his wife and daughter (both named Catherine) drowned at Summer Island in 1865, he went to Sydney sometime around 1866-7 where he married his second wife, Isabella Armstrong January 1867. At the time he still had four young children between the ages of 8 and 17yrs which may be the reason for the second marriage. However, he died nine months later, being found drowned in Darling Harbour in October 1867. By finding his death, we were able to locate Letters of Administration for his estate, an Inquest on his death through The Sydney Mail and details of his second marriage. This has been a major breakthrough and I would like to thank everyone who sent me information on all the Michael MURRAY'S, as it all helped to find the correct one. One of the many reasons we were keen to locate Michael's death was because incorrect details of his family appeared in an undisclosed Pioneer Register published recently. The entry for Michael erroneously showed him deceased in Redfern in 1887 and his wife deceased in Paterson in 1873. Catherine of course drowned on the Macleay River in 1865, (headstone in the West Kempsey Cemetery). It may have been that the person who provided the entry only took the information from the NSW BDM Index and didn't get the original death record which would have provided sufficient details to identify whether they had the correct entry or not. Another incorrect entry for the same Pioneer Register shows Michael's brother, William James MURRAY had died in Sydney in 1896, but in fact he died in Parramatta in 1901 (we have documentation to prove this). I think that this is something we can all learn from when it comes to our family history - an index is just a finding aid and the original record is the best way to confirm most details (although even they can be wrong). It is also a reminder that we should check our sources carefully. BTW, we now have death records for the following unrelated Michael Murray names: Reg No Date Age Place 1870/5543 6 Oct 1870 72y Hastings River, Port Macquarie 1874/7450 7 Apr 1874 11m Pappinborough Creek, District Of Port Macquarie 1877/3878 19 Jul 1877 56y Bathurst Hospital 1879/6233 30 Apr 1879 72y Liverpool Asylum 1886/8516 4 May 1886 57y George Street Asylum Parramatta 1887/4722 8 Aug 1887 22y10m Cleveland Street, Municipality Of Redfern 1895/3823 21 Jun 1895 80y Victoria Street Sydney 1902/5697 7 Apr 1902 65y Liverpool Asylum 1910/4955 23 Mar 1910 33y General Hospital Casino 1911/5669 2 Apr 1911 80y Rookwood Asylum If you would like a copy of the transcript, please drop us a line.
